Re: iMac 20 G5 screen repair

2009-11-01 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Glen,

Another option if you want to move up to a nice intel iMac but can't quite
spring for the price of the new models (beautiful excellent value as they
are!) is that stock of the previous model iMacs seems to being cleared at
much reduced prices (I noticed a 24 was $2499 now $1699 recently - but
you may find better).

Personally, I wouldn't spend much money on repairing a 20 G5 iMac but if
memory serves me correctly they have a video out port - so if you wanted to
get a bit more life out of it you could always plug an external monitor into
it - not a pretty solution but there are some cheap monitors out there...

Just some thoughts.

Cheers

Hi Glen,

Neil is correct. If any resellers have stock, Apple have reduced all iMacs
by around $700. We have our last 24 iMac in the store which is now $1698.
The stock of our 'old' iMacs got snapped up in a couple of days. We have a
27 iMac next to the 24 and you can see the difference in the colour and
sharpness of the display. I love my MacBook Pro but I think a 27 iMac is

Thanks everyone for all the information, I can see the main options are:
- contents insurance
- external monitor circa $400
- get a new iMac (or a new 'old' iMac)

I agree the 27 Macs are pretty interesting.

Snow Leopard, MacPro RAID

2009-11-01 Thread Ray Forma

I am currently running MacOS 10.4.11 (Tiger) on my G5 Mac. With two
hard disks installed I am able to run them as a mirrored RAID set.
This gives me a form of internal backup in case of hard disk failure.

I am considering updating to MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and a current
MacPro, the one with the Nehalem processor. Does anyone know if Disk
Utility will still allow me to set up a mirrored RAID set on such a
MacPro, assuming I fit two identical hard drives. Note that I am NOT
planning to get the A$1000 plus raid card for the MacPro.

Hey Ray,

As far as I'm aware you should be able to Software RAID with no issues

Another option you might like to consider is using Time Machine to

Just a suggestion. :)

Re: Snow Leopard, MacPro RAID

2009-11-01 Thread Dark1
Your probably aware of this already but I thought it'd be a good idea
to remind people that a Mirror RAID (1) system will provide a
performance boost to reading data and only protect against mechanical
failure of a hard drive. While a comprehensive backup system will
provide protection against mechanical and software failure amongst
other possible mistakes.

Ruben

Ray, you can setup a software RAID on a MacPro under Snow Leopard
for RAID0 (stripe) or RAID1 (mirror) with Disk Utility just as you
have done before. You only need the additional RAID card to create
more advanced level of RAID (such as a combination of mirror and
stripe).

As far as I'm aware, the drives capacity (and/or manufacturer) don't
HAVE to be identical at all, you will just find that the two slices
of the RAID need to be the same. For example, you can use a 200GB
drive and a 320GB drive, but your mirror RAID will only ever be able
to be 200GB. It is recommended to use the same size drives, only so
you're no wasting capacity as you would in the above instance.

For an increased safety level in an ideal world, you would want to
use the same capacity drives from the same manufacturer but a
different production batch.

WAMUG Meeting Final Reminder: This Tuesday 3 November 2009 (Please Do Not Reply)

2009-11-01 Thread Pete Smith

G'day again all WAMUGGERS.

Have you set your iCal alarm for the Melbourne Cup next Tuesday, 3
November 2009? More importantly, have you set it up for the WAMUG
meeting that night? Yep, it's come around again.

Topics for discussion are; in no particular order:

1.  iTunes 9 (we ran out of time last meeting and missed it out);
2.	Air Mouse (an interesting iPhone app, which is actually easier to
demonstrate on the computer than the iPhone!);

3. Who came last in the Melbourne Cup;
4.	Photoshop substitutes (eg Acorn, Pixelmator, GraphicConverter,
Preview, iPhoto and any suggestions from the audience); and

5. Tricks with Apple Mail.

Also, we hope to discuss new Apple hardware but that is still
tentative at this stage.

Of course, don't forget the question and answer session at the
beginning of every meeting and a cuppa and biscuits at the end.

(Details are subject to change without notice)

Location: Geology building 312, Curtin University, Bentley.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm
WAMUG meets in the large meeting room just inside the front
door of the building

Did your previous subscription ever report the presence and capture of
any Mac viruses? I didn't think so, because they don't exist in any
real sense. X5 was just sitting there doing nothing useful and
consuming processor resources that could have been used for something

Even though there may not be danger in the wild for Macs yet it's

Although there's no comparison in quality you can get a 20 BenQ LCD

off getting one of those and using your distorted iMac screen as a

streaming movie, ie can I make a streaming animated GIF?

Hi Severin,

I'm not sure why there is a delay in them playing, did you export the
GIFs as below?
When you created your GIF in PS, File Export to export the document
as a movie or under the save as option save the file as a GIF.

Be sure to select Save for Web and Devices (select GIF dithered).

If you want to loop your animation continuously you can select that
option in window that pops up after you have chosen Save For Web
Devices. Under the colour table that shows up is Looping options,
just select forever and save it.
You can also pick others and select the amount of times you want
your animation to loop.

Re: Elements 8 pricing

2009-11-01 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi All

I know I may be weighing in late on this discussion (have been out of the
loop for a bit), but thought I'd just add to it.
One thing I really love with those sort of buy it cheap sites are when you
actually come to order it.
Sure, they advertise the product cheap, but go and run through the order
process. I added one to a cart and went to ship it to WA (my postcode 6110).
The shipping price is $38.50exGST for the education version. The total price
then went up to $122.40incGST.
Considering the education RRP from another wholesaler I get it from is
$102incGST plus their $11 freight charge, it still works out better.

A find this a lot with some of these cheap sites.
It would be like advertising a new iMac worth $1600 for $800* (*Conditions
Apply) then saying that it has to be delivered and the delivery price is
$900.

Just my 2cents worth anyway.

Side note - if anyone is interested then yes I can get the Adobe Photoshop
Elements 8. The Retail version has an RRP of $154. Am happy to do it a
little bit cheaper for WAMUG people, but like everything there's very little
in it these days (and I still have to eat, even if it's just one meal a day)
;o)

Hope that helps a little. :o)

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: Animated GIF

2009-11-01 Thread James Devenish

Hi Severin,

2009/11/2 Severin Crisp sevcr...@westnet.com.au:
I use animated GIFs of a series of images, generated from within Photoshop,
as a very convenient way of placing them on a webpage. However there is a
 considerable delay in them playing,

GIF allows a deliberate delay, useful if the frames contains text.
Photoshop allows you to adjust the delay for each frame. In the
Animation pallette, it's pretty obvious how to change the delay (but
the exact method depends on whether you are using Frame mode or
Timeline mode). If this isn't the problem, you might like to disable
interlacing. If it is still taking a long time, you might want to
reduce the canvas size, or re-evaluate the need for animation. If
animation is still necessary, Flash is the most common alternative for
fast loading web animations (but you can't do it within Photoshop).

Re: Animated GIF

2009-11-01 Thread Severin Crisp

Yes, done all that Ronni. It may just be the size of this one,
1.3MB. I can see a VERY long time lag after it downloads and before
it starts to play, like 13 secs to download, judged from the modem
lights, then a further 27 secs to start playing.

Re: Animated GIF

2009-11-01 Thread Severin Crisp

I think size may be the root of the problem. There are 28 frames,
400 x 400 pixels, 128 colours, 88% dither no interlace or
transparency. 2.5 secs per frame. It is 1.3MB.
