Yesterday I placed everything on my chaotic desktop into one folder to get some
space to do something.
I did some work and later I tried to get access to the clear-up folder but

I would think you had caused some corruption in Finder.
When you are unable to open any files or folders in Finder, often moving the
com.apple.finder.plist file found in (your
user)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop then, Relaunch
your Finder. --Force

Is this the same iMac you have been having problems with no USB Ports working,
as in WAMUG Subject Big Problems with iMac?
The keyboard won't be recognised if the USB ports are not working.

Over the last couple of months my MacBook Pro (10.7.4) has occasionally refused
to wake up! Nothing I can do will open the screen and I end up shutting the
computer down and restarting to proceed.

I suggest first resetting the System Management Controller which is the
software which controls the sleep function. Very easy to do. Look at Apple
Support article HT3964.
