Yesterday I placed everything on my chaotic desktop into one folder to get some space to do something. I did some work and later I tried to get access to the clear-up folder but with no success. My HD icon resides on the desktop as does my download target folder. None would open. I could

Hi Bill, I would think you had caused some corruption in Finder. When you are unable to open any files or folders in Finder, often moving the com.apple.finder.plist file found in (your user)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop then, Relaunch your Finder. --Force
