Re: OmniFocus

2012-08-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Stuart,

Omni Group has released OmniFocus 1.10.3 update.

Focused on resolving some compatibility issues with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion,
Omni Group has released version 1.10.3 of its OmniFocus task management app.
The maintenance update fixes some integration issues with Mail on Mountain
Lion, ensures that OmniFocus works correctly with MailTags 3.1 and later,
squashes a bug with the “allowed mail senders” scripting property, and fixes a
regression with the Japanese localization that made the Help menu item
non-functional. While iCal Sync isn’t available when running on Mountain Lion,
Calendar export in the Sync preferences will still work.

Of course there are always those who read a book like this and become

You need to *really* want Omnifocus (OF) to buy the whole ensemble and as
they don't have a web app you may need to pay the extra for the mobile
version to follow the full Getting Things Done (GTD) principles that it
is designed around. (Or use a good note taking system.)

You probably won't get the best value out of it if you are not familiar
with the Getting Things Done principles that it is built on.

Best to read David Allen's Book Getting Things Done before spending
 that
much on an app of this kind.

Some of the well respected cheaper premium alternatives include
 Remember

As far as I know RTM doesn't follow the GTD principles quite so much.
Things maybe does a bit more.
There are gazillions of task apps but some of the free/cheap ones don't
allow you to assign tasks to projects and other advanced features.

The only annoyance that I have with Omnifocus it is that it does not
 have a
delegate function (which is a core GTD principle - GRRR!). EG. if you
have a partner or assistant using the same system you should be able to
create a task and assign it to the other person. It should simply show up
in their task inbox in the app when you send it to them. ReQall does
 this
brilliantly… but not Omnifocus the so-called true GTD app. You can email
 a
task from OF on the iPad but it just sends the task title, project name
 and
due date… and it doesn't even import the @#@$ details into the other
 person's copy of OF!!!

I have submitted a feature request (about a year ago) and they are
 thinking
 about it.
That said though their support seems pretty active and they responded
 quickly.

Apart from that it is very fully featured and very good if you want to do
the full GTD thing. *If you are not following GTD principles too closely
you may be better off saving some money and looking at Things, RTM,
 ReQall
 or similar.*

A bit [off topic]: selling iPad 1

Hi all
I am thinking of upgrading my iPad 1 - not so fussed as to which version I

If I decide to sell it, how much should I sell it for?
I bought it the December before the iPad2 came out - however long that is.
Thanks.

Saving Mail attachments

Saving attachments to emails I receive and which I open in Preview frustrates

What mindset ) (or way of thinking) would think that export means Save to

international trade (which is what export means to me).

I'm not understanding your problem. Are you referring to saving attachments
that you receive IN emails to a folder of your choice?
Click on the 'Save' button in the email in the resulting window select the
folder you wish to save the attachment to.

Or 'Control-Click' on the image in your message you receive a few other
choices: Open Attachment, Open with, Quick look Attachment, Save Attachment,
Save to Downloads Folder, View in place, Copy Image.

Or you can drag the attachment out of the email into a folder of your choice.
Or Click (and release) the 'Save button' in the header of the message and the
attachment flies into the Downloads folder instantly.

Mail gives you lots of ways to save attachments.

What mindset ) (or way of thinking) would think that export means Save to

There is no logical connection that I can think of between saving and sending
off somewhere by way of international trade (which is what export means to

When a document is opened Preview.app, you can go File Move To - and select
the folder you wish to move the file to.
You don't have to 'Export' the file. Export gives you the opportunity to export
in a different format or use a Quartz filter if you wish to.

Oh Michael... you really have to be joking now :-))

Re: E-Tax on Mac

2012-08-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Peter Severin,

Could being 'forced' to purchase Windows to complete your Tax Return online be
classed as buying tax reference material

http://www.ato.gov.au/content/00313848.htm

Expenses for the preparation and lodgment of your tax return and activity
statements include costs associated with:
• buying tax reference material

I use a Tax Consultant, and 'part' of his fee is a Tax Deduction; probably
'part' because he charges me far too much :(
Fees paid to a recognised tax adviser are deductible in the year you incur
them...

It amazes me how the ATO get away with not supporting other operating systems.
Their reasoning 'Why' is just NOT good enough!

/Quote
Why isn't e-tax compatible with non-Windows operating systems?

In considering the ongoing development of e-tax, a number of factors are taken
into account which have an impact on our ability to provide taxpayers with a
platform independent solution. Our highest priority each income year is
updating e-tax so that it is compatible with changes to tax legislation to
ensure the current level of service for 2.6 million taxpayers is maintained. We
must allocate information technology resources necessary to achieve this before
other enhancements can be considered.

Will this change and when?

Since 2007, we have continuously undertaken work to explore whether technology
is available to make e-tax compatible with other operating systems, without
necessitating a major redevelopment.

In 2011-12, due to recent developments in the technology used to produce e-tax,
we have worked toward an e-tax application for Apple Mac systems.
However complexities in applying this recent technology, including issues
associated with the ability to meet the required level of security and
usability (including for vision impaired users) mean that we are unable to make
e-tax compatible with Apple Mac systems to allow users to prepare and lodge
their 2012 tax return at this time.

We are however continuing to work through these issues with a view to delivery
of a version suitable for Mac users in 2012-13.
We are also investigating, as a longer term solution, a move to a web-based
e-taxproduct. One of the major considerations in doing this will be balancing
the need for greater usability and our security requirements to ensure that
taxpayer information is protected - particularly with mobile computing devices.

Off Topic - Mac and Adobe Work

2012-08-19 Thread Greg J Manzie
Hello WAMUGgers

I apologise if this is too far off topic.

We produce a high quality, spiral bound, 84 page calendar/year book for the
minerals industry. The publication is almost entirely made up of photographs
(Canon 5D Mk iii) taken by my wife and myself. Think annual report with very
little text.

We have an all Mac system with a MacPro and 2 x MacBook Pros all on Mountain
Lion.

Can anyone please recommend a Mac user (they speak our language) with good
InDesign and pre press skills. We provide the design concept and have produced
the publication twice before.

The ad agency we used last time were inefficient and became too expensive. They
had to place 300 (approximately) images and blew out the budget due to silly
mistakes caused by a lack of attention to details (peoples heads cut off). They
then sent a draft to the printers instead of the approved and signed off
package (sheeesh).

This is an ideal job for a Mac person who professionally understands Mac, Adobe
and the printing industry. But the project is a long way from junk mail in your
letter box.

We would appreciate a phone call, or contact off list, if you can help.

Kind Regards Greg (member)

Re: free anti-virus software

2012-08-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Walter,

The best anti virus for your MAC is your MAC OS.
There are no known viruses for MAC. Trojans and malware are not viruses.
Follow the safe browsing rules so you won't have to worry about viruses,
trojans and malware.

All real-time antivirus products slow down your computer, that is the nature of
the game.
So Sophos will slow down your computer.
Norton software tends to always be bloated and not really that great to begin
with, so I would leave iAntiVirus alone.

If you feel you require Antivirus program on your Mac ClamXav 2.3.2 is highly
recommended and Free.
But DON'T download the App Store version, download from this link.
http://www.clamxav.com/download.php#

What are the differences between the version of ClamXav available to download
here and the version on the Mac App Store?

• The App Store version doesn't contain ClamXav Sentry, so it is not
able to watch your computer for new files and scan them as they arrive.
• There is no engine installation phase as the App Store requirements
stipulate that everything must be self-contained within the app.
• Virus definition updates are downloaded on a per-user basis.
• Updates to the ClamXav app itself are taken care of via the Mac App
Store.
• Mac OS X 10.6 or greater is required.

So to answer your Question:
Are they worth having and will they work with my iMac running 10.6.8 ?

It is your choice really, if having virus protection on your Mac is going to
make you feel safer (more protected) go ahead.
Personally I don't feel they are worth having.

And Yes, they will run on your iMac running 10.6.8, just make sure you download
the version compatible with OS X 10.6.8

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: free anti-virus software

2012-08-19 Thread Severin Crisp
That is correct, I can not recall the amount but it is not excessive.
I have used it for many years now with nary a glitch, and an occasional
detection of something nasty to let me know it is (probably!) working. It used
to have a cousin called Net Barrier but this is now rolled in with Virus
Barrier to make a complete package. It can be licensed for more than one
computer, as I have done.
I agree, the built in OS protection is probably more than sufficient but with
this my sleep at night is doubly assured!
