Normally photos are handled through iPhoto (rather then iTunes) from the
iPad and iPhones. Do they show up there in iPhoto (under Devices left hand
side listing iPad name)?

f you just click Go and let it do it thing, then there can be some
problems.
Personally myself I've never used it, but just going on what I've heard back
about.
