are still in Finder, but if I delete the desktop one, I can't open any of

audiobooks, there is now a black splodge and on the right there is a black

Leopard the screen turned blue and froze. I had to turn off at power point.
When I started up again I had just a vestige of dock showing and no other
icons. I turned power off again. It then booted up
of monitor attachment.
Frankly, I'd take option 2 (unless you need Rosetta for PPC). The bonus
being, Lion is actually a pretty nice upgrade.
