Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-29 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Yes I think that’s probably one of the most common reasons to have to run it on
a new M-series - MYOB in Parallels. :)
At least it works under Windows 11 Preview and Parallels. (Parallels definitely
does it better than VMWare I’ve found from experience when doing either for
clients).
What’s even worse though is MYOB trying to get some things working in MYOB
AccountRight for Windows. - it doesn’t do things that they had as a staple for
MYOB AccountEdge for Mac!
If only they’d spend a little of their millions and make a 64bit version for
Mac - they would have a huge happy client base,…lol.
But I digress,….I won’t get started on that. lol

I mean, it’s not like they didn’t have time to know it was going from 32bit to
64bit - what was it,..about 12-13 years when the first Mac OS 32/64bit came
along in Snow Leopard? (Panther had simple support for 64bit but not the main
OS I think it was). I guess that’s not much time for them,…lol. :)

Kind regards
Daniel

I have a client running MYOB under Windows 11 on an M1 iMac - because Account
Edge is STILL just 32bit software, and therefore simply can’t run on the new
Macs.

I got her going with Parallels Desktop, but is necessary to install the
developer edition of Windows 11 in order to work on the M1 chip, so I expect it
would be the same for the M2. Been working well for over 12 months though...

Thanks as always Daniel for your response

I tried the SMC reset by holding down the power button for ten seconds, then a
normal restart push. No change.

It is a late 2013 Retina. The anti reflective coating has gone off the screen
but a plastic film has resurrected it and I can work with it as it is.

The $299 was the price Apple gave me on the service website. It did say
‘estimate’ 

The PC software I use from Time to time is Oziexplorer for digital mapping. I
have satisfactory alternatives, but don’t want to give it up if I don’t have to

The other is Peugeot workshop manual and OBD2 port reader software. This is
pretty handy to have to read and reset engine codes and I have hardware that
goes with it so am reluctant to give it up.

I’ll check out my other options as you’ve suggested and will contact you off
list for second hand machines if I need to go that path.

Thanks again

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi Tim, I had a very similar experience in the last couple of weeks for
   an MBA (Mid 2012) I am selling - (daughter's ex-school used MBA). I
thought the battery was fine and when a potential buyer came over, it
wouldn't boot into the setup screen (I had previously erased it). When
I put the power lead on it, it did boot up, as soon as the power lead
was disconnected, screen went black. So I surmised the battery was
completely shot. When I left it on charge overnight prior to selling,
the charge lead light remained orange and I noted too that the power
block was cold - so no energy going into the dead battery. Light
remained orange for days - it was never going to go green.

So I bought a replacement battery (A1466 MBA), fitted it and then
charged it. Now it boots fine whether on charger lead or not. I am also
aware that the eBay batteries are potentially dubious life (when
compared with new Apple batteries fitted by Apple), but for $38 I was
ok with that for what is quite an old machine that is otherwise a good
   working MBA.

If I were in your position, I would get myself an eBay battery ($70 odd
from a quick search) to get yourself going again. From there you can
decide either to keep it in operation or peel off the data you need
from it and get a new (or newer used) MB. I wouldn't reckon that $299
is worth spending on such an old machine. You can get 4 eBay batteries
for the same and they're an easy DIY fit. Just watch the myriad of
   clips on YouTube.
   Kind Regards
   Peter Crisp

Do I just get the battery replaced or replace the machine?. I have a
feeling it’s no longer supported for OSX upgrades.
 Wise thoughts appreciated.

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tim

On a new Apple Silicon machine you’ll have a bit of a nightmare getting VMWare
to work - as we tried to do one for another client and it was a nightmare. You
definitely can’t use the same “VM File” you have - you have to start from
scratch. (And it will only work with a insider developer’s copy of Windows 11
for ARM - you can’t actually buy Windows for it).
I did set up Parallels with Windows 11 ARM for a couple of clients on a new
Apple Silicon iMac and got it work. But we had to set it from scratch. And some
things are a little different then normal - so programs apparently don’t work
as well in Windows ARM as they do for other. So that’s just something to be
aware of as well.

Have you tried an SMC reset as well if it’s not starting up. As generally even
if the battery has failed it still should run on power adapter. (Unless the
battery has swollen and is causing other issues as well).

Battery prices can vary - depends on if it’s a Early 2013 13” or a Late 2013
13” (Retina). As the batteries for the Retina can be a nightmare to do. (I
don’t even do the Retina’s myself for some models - as it’s just too fiddly and
risky the way they are “glued in”.

So just something to be wary of.
Other option would be something second hand - as that’s what I’ve got for some
other clients - which was a bit cheaper than new and still Intel so still
worked with all their current software - but a bit more up to date.

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel
