I imagine that was to soften his image a little. He usually appeared as a
'blowhard', and the goofy way of tying the tie just let us know that he's
really somewhat of a 'buffoon'!

episode, I noticed Mayor Pike wearing a stripped necktie instead of his usual

carried a pocket watch. Now, was that just scripted in for the Andy Taylor
character or did/does Andy Griffith actually carry a pocket watch?
