My wife and I owned a very old house in the 70's and 80's and we had
curtains instead of doors in several of our rooms; especially on the double
doors. Not sure if that was the style or if we did it because we saw it on
TAGS.

Laura Lee, it's funny you should mention Lydia and Howard. I always thought
they'd be a good match because Lydia doesn't strike me as the type to sass Mrs.
Sprague. Plus they'd have lovely well mannered, tall, thin, slightly carsick
children.
It does shock me though to hear that
When I was a child in the '50s curtains were
frequently used in lieu of doors, maintaining a
modicum of privacy while still allowing the heat from
the wood or coal stove into the shut off room.
(Furnaces weren't as common then-especially in rural areas.)
Andy Griffith Show Book spells it Heckmondwike and I found this:

Yes, it's real - you just mispelled it... an easy mistake to make.

Well, thanks to Lori, I found my Eckmondwight. The correct spelling is
Heckmondwike and if you get over on Google maps, you can zoom right in on
the village cricket pitch.

Hi Gang, FOUND IT
After some searching and goodl ole Google Earth, the town is actually spelled
Heckmondwike and NOT with an E as in Eckmond
Look it up, it's in the northern part of England, northeast of Liverpool.

Hello Folks!!
??? My husband and I spent a weekend in Mount Airy two weeks ago and, even
though we'd been there before, we had a most extraordinary experience.? You may
remember me as the DJ who hosts the Red Rooster Party on WHUS.org where we
always have a Mayberry Corner segment.? Anyway, my
I think Schwamp was actually the one moonshiner the Mayberry Sheriff's
Department could never quite catch up with. Very clever that one. Notice the
way he never engages in conversation...less likely to cause a slip of the
tongue. And why do you suppose he was always hangin' around those dances
Have we ever decided if Malcolm's hometown, Eckmondwight, is a real place?
I can't find it with my spelling so I've never been sure. Then the other
week while satching an Britcom called Last of the Summer Wine, an early
episode from the 70s, when one of the main characters mentioned
