All of this talk about sidekicks left out one notable one, from radio. Someone
did correctly mention Parley Baer's role
as Chester on the radio version of Gunsmoke, but don't forget Windy Wails,
the comic relief from the Bobby
Benson radio series of the 1950s. That crusty comic relief was
I think I remember seeing our Frank Meyers on a Mickey Mouse Club mystery
with the Hardy Boys involving gold doubloons when I was a youngster. His
delivery, voice and demeanor are very recognizable most times.

I don't think Don Knotts had a lot of dramatic acting roles although he did
appear occasionally on various
TV series. If a person possessed the talent for comedy like our lovable Barney
Fife I suppose there would
be no need to expand to other areas of acting. But it's been praying on my mind

I just watched Return to Mayberry today, and I got to thinking about the
tone of Denver Pyle's voice. On the 5 black white episodes that the
Darling family appeared in, Denver as Briscoe had that deep voice, and of
course, talked slow and twangy. In the color episode The Darling Fortune,
he was
Alan Hale Jr. (Jeff Pruitt) was Gene Autry's sidekick Tiny in two episodes
of the first season of The Gene Autry Show.
