The next show is April 21, 2024 at 6 and 8pm CT.

April 26 at 5pm CT.
If you haven't seen it, watch it.

Re: Mayberry Days during the week

2023-09-16 Thread Jeff Koontz
>Hello , what are your thoughts on Mayberry Days during the week compared to
>the weekend ?
Holland - it all depends on what you want. There are a lot more people coming
in early to avoid the crowds than there used to be, but you have the advantage
of being an hour away and enjoying Mount Airy during the "off season" when
downtown isn't as crowded. There are things to do during the week and that
includes just getting a bottle of pop, sitting down and counting cars.

The schedule is now online at
https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html. Weekday activities
include a guided backstage tour of the Playhouse, John Floyd "The Mouth of
Mayberry" comedy show, and movies at the Earle.
Other possibilities not on the schedule:
- Walk right into Snappy Lunch without the line- Take your time going thru the
Andy Griffith Museum without Bernie crowding you- Learn about Surry County
music history at the Old Time Music Heritage Hall (included with AGM
admission). The Women in Old-Time Music is their latest exhibit- Mount Airy
Regional History Museum is downtown- Take a squadcar tour- Go see the world's
largest open face granite quarry- (This goes for everyone)  Stop in at the
Playhouse and come say hey. I'm headed to Mount Airy on Monday and will be
helping the Arts Council all week
Safe travels,Jeff

Mayberry Trivia Time!

2023-08-10 Thread Allan Newsome
Hey folks!

This week's Two Chairs No Waiting - Andy Griffith Show Podcast is all about
Mayberry Trivia and what better way to recharge from the summer heat than
to test our skill at Mayberry trivia. Not just any trivia either because
these questions will give everyone a shot at getting the answer right
because they are multiple choice.

So sit back, recharge your batteries, and see how many questions you can
get right as we go. I hope the questions bring to mind the fun had when
watching episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and they let you experience the
joy all over again.

Mayberry Man movie and The Mayberry Effect

2023-07-19 Thread Allan Newsome
For anyone that would like to watch the Mayberry Man movie and see what the
fuss is about. Watch it FREE on Amazon Prime, Tubi OR YouTube...here's the

Both the Mayberry Man movie and The Mayberry Effect documentary are FREE to
watch on Tubi. Tubi is an app you can get on your phone or on your TV for
free. Just search for the movie titles and you can watch a double feature.

Mayberry honors?

2023-07-18 Thread Allan Newsome
Whew...I wasn't aware Ben Weaver was a member here at the WBMUTBB Chapter.

As a REMINDER, we have a rule here at the WBMUTBB Digest that negative
comments are not allowed. Folks should always try to keep their comments
positive and "act like somebody."

You know, "Spread a little sunshine every day, Spread a little sunshine
every day, Help someone along.. life's... way... Spread a little sunshine
every day!" That's what Mayberry and the spirit of Mayberry is all about.

I, of course, am biased toward both The Mayberry Effect documentary and the
Mayberry Man movie but I believe there can NEVER be TOO MUCH Mayberry in
the world. So, judge for yourself if these projects are worthy of viewing.

Andy Griffith's daughter, Dixie, is in The Mayberry Effect and is an
Executive Producer of Mayberry Man. Don Knotts daughter, Karen, appears in
both The Mayberry Effect and Mayberry Man. Both stated that their fathers
would love these efforts to keep Mayberry in the minds and hearts of the
viewers.

I'm proud to be a part of each of these projects and, as I said, I have a
bias but mainly...I LOVE Mayberry and each of them made me happy to be a
part of the Mayberry family.

Sincerely,

response to Mayberry honors....

2023-07-18 Thread Jan Newsome
First of all, while this isn't an attack on the poster, I want you to
know that I took it as an attack on EVERYONE that took part in the two "
amateurish and nonsensical,
not to mention boorish productions." Everyone has their own opinion on
things, but to say this about this movie and this documentary just isn't
fair. People, fans, life long avid fans poured their hearts into these.
I'm not sure if you know it or not, but Karen Knotts AND Dixie Griffith
BOTH approved of the movie.

Both of these were done to show the love for the show, to show fans a taste
of what it's like to attend a festival. Also to continue to keep the SPIRIT
of the show alive. There was no harm done to anyone, no fun made of anyone.
I thought the script paid homage to the show and to the fans. To say that
you'd wish they'd go away, well I think that's just mean spirited.

Maybe, I'm coming across a little harsh, but I'm also a PROUD wife, I'm
very PROUD of the TWO productions that my husband was a part of. I think he
did an amazing job on both of them, but not just him. All of the people
that worked on both projects did an amazing job on them, and for over 3
years, I'm getting a little tired of getting kicked. We're PROUD of
this/these projects. We know that some people aren't going to like them,
but you can not like them and be nice about it.

Mayberry Retreat

2023-05-16 Thread Johnna Clarke
I attended the Mayberry Retreat in Berea, Kentucky two weeks ago. My post
is a bit delayed as life happens, but I wanted to share about the
experience.

The event host was Randy Turner, Mayberry enthusiast and expert. He
planned three days of presentations, musical concerts, and regional treats
for all to enjoy. Special guests were Leroy Mack McNees and his wife
Janice. A very special experience for us attendees was when Leroy played
THE dobro that Leroy played on TAGS. We enjoyed fellowship at every meal,
and free time was also built into the schedule to give us time to explore
the area.

I cannot convey how wonderful it was to forget the outside world for three
days and just live in the Mayberry world with strangers who quickly seemed
like old friends.

I'm so looking forward to the 2024 retreat. I'm sure Randy will have
plenty of Mayberry experiences planned, and I hope folks will take
advantage of the truly unique opportunity.

Mayberry Days Silent Auction Results

2022-09-26 Thread Jeff Koontz
The dust has settled on another WBMUTBB Silent Auction and it was our biggest
year with a total of $6,246 raised for the Surry Arts Council this year. So
many people to thank for their help with donations, assistance, and bidding. We
tried something new this year with the TAGSale "Buy It Now" price and that was
a success in reducing inventory quickly and letting people acquire something
without having to wait. A special thanks to auctioneers James Pierce and Eric
Lowery for their willingness and abilities.

Some valuable lessons learned having gone through a little different format
this year. One is needing a couple more volunteers to help with some specific
tasks so if you are thinking you would like to be a part of the fun, please let
me know. I've had a bucket on my head since Saturday and thought about a couple
new things we might try next year.

There are things that came in this year that didn't make it out to the tables,
along with items that have been waiting for years to make an appearance, so
keep your creativity going to make those great Mayberry items and plan for our
24th auction(s) next year at the 34th annual Mayberry Days.

RE: Gneral Mayberry Days Question

2022-09-18 Thread Jeff Koontz
Holland - I don't think there is a wrong answer to what day is best, so I'll
recommend looking through the schedule (link below) and see what is most
interesting to you on the days you can come up.

https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html

A few things to consider:

- Do you want to meet the special guests? Many will not be in town on Wednesday
and there is no autograph session on the schedule. Thursday's dinner at Cross
Creek has sold out and the only autograph session is there.

- Do you want to eat at Snappy Lunch? The lunch line will exist every day, but
be shorter on Wednesday.

- Do you want to compete in trivia? That is Friday

- Do you like beach music? Concerts on Wednesday and Thursday night

- Want to see The Mayberry Effect Documentary on the big screen or hear Randy
Turner speak about TAGS and the 40 Acre Backlot? Only on Wednesday.

- Don't like crowds? There are a lot more things scheduled for Friday and a lot
more people in town.

- Want to get a MD22 postmark? They are only available on the same days you can
make it to Mount Airy. H coincidence?

Enjoy your time at Mayberry Days and let us know what day you made it.

If this goes over well I plan to do the second series in the fall. I am
just wondering if any of you have been a part of this particular Mayberry

Buying gas in Mayberry

2022-03-20 Thread Harriet Browder
>…. I just traveled thru western NY...and payed $4.80/gallon. Aunt Bee

Right after I got my driver’s license my mom gave me a $5 bill and told me to
go to the gas station and get 5. Being the dutiful daughter, I followed her
instructions to the cent…. Got home and she asked for her change. I said,
“There was no change. You gave me $5. and you told me to get 5.” She meant 5
gallons when it was 34 cents a gallon. Today she would have to give me a $50
and she’d still get no change.

Christmas memory with Mayberry tie

2021-12-11 Thread Janine L Johnson
I just remembered the Brady Bunch episode where the mother lost her
voice just before Christmas. When the father took the kids to the mall
to see Santa, little Cindy asked him to restore her mother's voice so
she could sing in church for the holiday service. The Santa was
portrayed by our Otis Campbell and he did a good job of it too!

Mayberry "a friendly town" response

2021-11-16 Thread Jan Newsome
Carolyn, I was also going to respond. Yes, long ago "Floyd" did ask that,
it's always been his request on this digest. He wants to keep things
friendly, no talk of what cast members or characters that you don't like or
episodes that you don't like. He didn't set up the group for this. Back
when he set it up he set it up for folks to have a way to "get away" &
relax. What's your hurry? Discuss positive things, quote lines, tell
stories, tell about how TAGS was woven into your day that day. Nowadays
there are plenty of Facebook pages to gripe about that if you want to go do
that, but please do not on here. :-)

RE: "Mayberry Man" movie like TAGS

2021-10-16 Thread Good, Don
In response to Holland's post yesterday about the "Mayberry Man" movie being
similar to the "Man in a Hurry" episode on TAGS, yes, I see the similarities,
but I think it is even more similar to "Bailey's Bad Boy" episode on TAGS. In
that episode bad boy Ron Bailey is a cocky kid who broke the law in Mayberry
and doesn't want to be held accountable or take responsibility for his actions.
By the end of the episode he sees the value of standing on his own two feet,
seeing Andy's wisdom and becomes a better person for it.

Mayberry Man Movie

2021-10-14 Thread H S
Just finished watching The Mayberry Man Movie. There's but one word that comes
to my mind when referring to this movie ." BIG " !
I really enjoyed every second of it. All the actors and actresses were great !
The main thing that comes to mind about the whole movie in general is that it
reminds me of the " Man in a hurry " episode with Malcom Tucker. Christ Stone
was in essence Malcom Tucker who had a busy life but had to stay in Mayberry
when he didn't want to begin with. During their ( both Chris and Malcom ) stay,
the spirit of Mayberry grew on them.
If yall have already discussed this my apology for being out of the loop with
such a discussion. Do any of yall agree that this movie reflects " Man in a
Hurry " in a most profound way ?

Having babies in Mayberry

2021-10-04 Thread H S
It really cracked me up ( on the abandoned baby episode with Jack Nicholson )
when Opie asked Helen if she would like to have a baby BEFORE she got married.
It was almost outside the limits of ( Mayberry Etiquette ) to ask such a thing.
If Malcom had asked such a thing he certainly would have received a good
dressing down.

Then Arnold asked Goober " would you like to know how you could get a baby " ?

Like Goober said later in the episode, embarrassed me something awful !

Mayberry Day WBMUTBB Auction

2021-09-28 Thread Jeff Koontz
We had another successful auction thanks to so many of our chapter members and
friends. This year's total was $3,587.50 plus another $871.00 from the Rummage
Sale for a total of $4,458.50 in support of Mayberry Days.
It is always nice when people discover Mayberry Days and get something special
at the auction on their first time in town. They are easy to spot - "surprise,
surprise, I can see it in your eyes" with a big smile on their face.
Our chapter is very fortunate to have so many talented and generous members who
support this service project for the Surry Arts Council. Many thanks to those
who participated this year, particularly Eric Lowry and James Pierce as
auctioneers.

Mayberry Days WBMTBB Auction

2021-09-14 Thread Jeff Koontz
Mayberry Days is nearly upon us and I am late in sending out a reminder that
our annual WBMUTBB service project is coming up. After 20 silent auctions, we
had a successful live auction at the Blackmon Amphitheatre thanks to Eric
Lowery's talents and will do that again this year. We have another great line
up of donations, including a special "Classic TAGS" Quilt from Pat Coleman.

There will also be a "Scobeys" style Rummage Sale table with donated and
duplicate items that need a better home than a box in the Andy Griffith
Playhouse. Items will be priced for immediate purchase. Tables should be set up
on the side of the stage around 10 a.m.

The auction will be held after the parade at the Blackmon Amphitheatre starting
at 11 am. Please stop by, get a free bid paddle, and support our chapter's
efforts. It is entertaining to watch even if you didn't bid. 100% of the
proceeds to go the Surry Arts Council for Mayberry Days.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information.

Mayberry is a state of mind. It is also a real place! I'll visit the real place

better that way. Most problems seem to work themselves out and life goes on.
I hope we can see a lot of our old friends this Mayberry Days, and if you see
us be sure to say Howdy as it will be our last.  Neuropathy has taken a toll on
my feet and about 2 hours is all I'm able to walk on them now without a good
rest. We'll arrive Thursday and leave early Sunday AM so will have time to do
some visiting and talking. It has been a wild ride, from 1998 to 2021. We've
seen "Opie" grow up from a kid who was a dead ringer for Opie, we've met Thelma
Lou, Ernest T, Charlene, Jim Lindsey, Romeena, Goober, Ronnie Schell, Frank the
Fiance George Spence, Richard Linke, Leroy & Roland the Country Boys, and the
one who writ the theme song...Harvey Bullock - and others. We've also made
friends with the imposters ...impersonators... Tribute Artists, that's it!
Floyd, Mayor Pike, Otis, Col. Harvey, Ernest T, Andylina, Brisco, Barney [and

61 Years of Mayberry

2021-08-01 Thread Ken Anderson
In just a few weeks, I will be celebrating my 75th birthday. Sixty-one of
those years I have spent watching *The Andy Griffith Show.* Some people
still ask me what is so appealing about an old black and white television
program. So I thought I would share what it is I see when I watch *The Andy
Griffith Show* and what makes it so special to me.

When I see Andy and Opie sitting on their front porch having one of the
father and son talks, I see the father I never had. When I see Ellie Walker
behind the soda fountain at Walker's Drug Store, I see Mr. and Mrs. Weix
behind the soda fountain at the drug store I visited many times during my
childhood. When I see Floyd cutting hair and talking with the town cronies,
I see myself sitting in Vircks' Barber Shop listening to the men talking
while I am reading comic books.

When I see Miss Crump telling Opie that he should go outside and play
football rather than studying, I see my seventh and eighth-grade teacher,
Mr. Elden. I recall riding home with him after we played a basketball game
against Athens. He was laughing and encouraging us by saying we would do
better next time. We had just lost 88-0. The referee stopped the game after
the third quarter. For back then, basketball for kids was just a game. A
game we played for fun and not for trophies.

When I see Mr. Foley working in his little grocery store, I remember Mr.
Krueger, who rigged a contest in his grocery store in Dorchester, so a
little boy would win a brand new baseball outfit. That little boy happened
to be me. Mr. Krueger knew my family did not have the money to buy me such
things.

When I see Opie and his friends fishing at Meyer's Lake or playing in
Crouch's Woods, I see my friends and me fishing at the old Mill Pond in
Dorchester or playing in Rau's woods outside of town.

These are the things I see whenever I visit Mayberry, for, like little Opie
Taylor, I was very fortunate to have grown up in a small town at a time
when life was much simpler. My life back then was far from being
idealistic, yet I would not have wanted to grow up in any other place or
any other time.

I just finished a novel, *The Shortest Journey,* by Hazel Holt, and I will
share a quote from her book. “Memories are the most important things we
have when we grow old. We must treat them with care so that they will last
out our lives.”

I understand that I have a selective memory. I choose to remember the good
times and friends that are long gone, but I also choose to toss out the bad
memories. Why hang on to those bad memories that only cause sadness when I
can keep the good memories that bring me so much joy?

I always laugh while watching TAGS when I see how quickly people are put
into jail without a hearing or anything. They are just brought it and put
in jail. Here are a few examples.

Malcolm Merriweather after his bike accident.

Mr. Dave for loitering and vagrancy.

All the townspeople when Barney was left in charge for a day.

Jim Lindsey for playing his guitar in front of the funeral home.

These are just a few. Can you name others?

Then Andy and Barney were repeatedly called to the Boone house when they
were fighting, but they never took them to lock up.

Didn’t the loaded goat earn a stint in the ole hoosegow? I remember the padded

with Old Man Weaver, sleeping off Lester’s moonshine. We don’t see it but I

A Mayberry Scene

2021-04-20 Thread Jed McCann
I could just picture that exact conversation. I was laughing while reading it.
Seeing Floyd stare off in the distance blinking then wide-eyed with a tilted
face. I don’t respond very often, but always enjoy reading the emails. Being
only 38 y/o following this for nearly 20 years I know I have to be a one of the
younger diehards.
Just an update my 8 and 7 y/o boys have seen almost every episode already. I’d
like to get them to complete it all, but they always tend to push for the
younger Opie episodes that relates to them more often which is fine and dandy.
It’s instilled in them though to continue to the next generation I’m sure many
of you will feel blessed to know.

A Mayberry Scene

2021-04-12 Thread Rafe Hollister
This is based on an old joke about Calvin Coolidge, but I thought I’d try my

barbershop)Floyd: Missed you at church yesterday.Andy: Yeah, I had an emergency
I had to tend to so I couldn’t make it. You were there, were you?Floyd: Oh,
Andy, you know I always make it to church every Sunday! Been going there for
years! Why, I don’t remember the last time I wasn’t...Andy: (Interrupting
Floyd) I know, Floyd, I know. So what did you think of the sermon?Floyd: The
sermon?Andy: Yeah. The preacher did preach a sermon, didn’t he? Floyd: Oh sure,
sure.Andy: Well what did you think of it?Floyd: I’m trying to remember...Andy:
Floyd, you just heard it yesterday, don’t tell me you forgot it already!Floyd:
It’s coming back to me, just a minute... AH!!Andy: What did the preacher preach

I've been to the Mayberry Church and the Trading Post along the Blue Ridge
Parkway. They are in Mayberry, VA, where Andy Griffith's mother is from. That
is where the name Mayberry originated. As I understand it, it was never
revealed that there was a town in Virginia, and it basically relocated into
North Carolina for the TV show. Griffith was concerned and wanted to keep
interlopers away from his mother's tiny hamlet she called home.

Mayberry-ish Gunsmoke

2021-01-18 Thread Jason Stillwell
I watched the Gunsmoke Season 11 episode "Malachi" this morning. In this
episode, Malachi the town drunk receives a letter from his brother Ethan,
stating that he will be stopping by for a brief visit when his stage passes
through. This sends Malachi into a bit of a tizzy. It seems Malachi has
told his brother that HE is the marshal of Dodge City. Since it's only for
a couple hours, and since Matt's out of town, Festus and Doc help him get
all cleaned up and attempt to pass him off as the marshal, allowing Malachi
to save face after boasting so to his brother Ralph. I mean
Ethan--portrayed by Edward Andrews from Aunt Bee and the Lecturer. Bet you
all will never guess who else turns out to have a nasty relationship with
the bottle!

Writing credit for the Gunsmoke episode goes to William Putman.

Wheres the real Mayberry ?

2021-01-18 Thread H S
Ok, I need to clean my head about something. I've ready many articles such as
the one attached below I found recently. Where is the real Mayberry ? I live
about an hour away from Mt Airy and ride my motorcycle on the Blue Ridge
Parkway fairly often. There are two things I remember seeing very well up
there. One is a Mayberry Church and the other is a Mayberry Trading Post. I
asked a nice lady who has lots of Mayberry ( the show ) memorabilia in her
store about the area on the parkway being Mayberry. She said it was Mayberry
and the township or whatever it was , was registered as Mayberry on the map,
though I found the address to be 883 Mayberry Church Rd, Meadows of Dan, VA
24120. The name of the road raises questions too.
I apologize if I have a false memory but that is what I remember. What makes it
so strange is that Mt. Airy and the Mayberry on the BRP are only 17 miles
apart. Was it remotely possible that Andy Griffith/or someone else got the name
of TAGS town from that little spot on the BRP ? Mayberry is a state of mind, Mt
Airy is a reflection of the show but I think the name itself came from the Blue
Ridge Parkway.

Christmas Greetings from The Mayberry Guru

2020-12-23 Thread Ken Anderson
I would like to wish all of you at the Digest a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy and Healthy New Year.

If there ever was a time we needed TAGS it was in 2020. During my 74 years
on this earth, I have never experienced anything like this past year.
Between the terrible pandemic and very divisive political climate, it was
so good to be able to sit back and visit Mayberry whenever the whim hit me.

We chose not to do any events this past season. At our ages, my wife and
decided it was best not to take any chances. As it turned out all of the
events we normally do were all canceled. We would normally participate in
between 80-90 car shows, parades, community festivals, and presentations,
so it was indeed a very strange summer. I only used one tank of gas in my
squad car all summer, when normally I would fill up about every ten days.

Hopefully, 2021 will find us returning to some normalcy and we will once
again be able to enjoy our regular routines, although I have decided to cut
back some on parades. I will not be traveling as far around the state next
year.

Have a very wonderful Christmas, everyone, and may 2021 bring you much
happiness, good health, and lots of friendships.

You'll probably get plenty of answers but I understand the little town of
Mayberry, Virginia, is the home of Andy Griffith's mother. Yes, you were right
there in it. Me too. Several times I've traversed the Blue Ridge and stopped
there for some pumpkin butter. Young (Andy, it's that college girl) lady was
turning the mill. Happy Honey Bees were swirling around but never bothered a
soul. The Gulf Gas Station, which isn't a gas station any longer is a small
store full of nostalgia. The quaint church is a sight to behold. Don't miss a
chance to see the real town of Mayberry.

Mayberry in Film Noir

I watched a good film noir from 1950 titled “Where Danger Lives”starring Robert
Mitchum that was partly filmed at the Forty Acres backlot.First, Mitchum had a
wreck in front of the All Souls Church when the town drunkwas driving on the
wrong side of the road. Later, he bought a newspaper at  a pharmacy where
Foley’s Market and Floyd’sBarber Shop was. You could see the columns to the
courthouse in the background. The movie was produced by RKO, and the boys at the
lab (Google) tell us that itwas sold to Desilu Productions in 1957.

I watch a lot of film noir, but I’ve never noticed Mayberry before.I’ll have to

Mayberry and Guards

2020-11-26 Thread Ken Anderson
I have often wondered why the Mayberry Bank and Weaver's Department Store
had Asa as a security guard and night watchman. I have done banking with
many different banks, both in very small towns and a city of 60,000. Yet,
I had never once seen a security guard in any of the banks in all my 74
years. So, it seems very unlikely that the Mayberry Bank would need a
guard. I guess that explains why Asa slept while on guard.

I also have also shopped at virtually hundreds of department stores over
those same 74 years, and again, I don't think any of them ever had a night
watchman.

Just something that has always been preying on my mind.

Hankie in Mayberry

2020-11-23 Thread Rick Grimsley
In replying to Ken's question about the hankie being used in the show here is
an interesting story. I heard this from Debbie Miles, former owner of Mayberry
On Main in Mount Airy. She said  Emmett Forest received the black jacket that
Barney wore in the show, when he was riding the white horse east to west, to be
put in the Andy Griffith Museum. He brought it by the store to show it to the
Darrell and Debbie Miles. It was a small jacket and Debbie ask if she could try
it on. Emmett said sure. Debbie put the jacket on and reached into the pocket.
To her surprise she pulled out a tissue that was in the pocket. Good chance was
the one that Barney used in the show.

Mayberry Days article

2020-10-23 Thread Jeff Koontz
From an article in the Mount Airy News:

Fans of “The Andy Griffith Show” often cite various “enduring qualities” that
keep the show funny, relevant and popular today, six decades after the show
debuted.

The same can be said for the local Mayberry Days Festival, which is proving to
be enduring itself, even in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Unless something drastic happens before then, the Surry Arts Council’s Tanya
Jones says the festival will go on Sept. 21-Sept. 27. The only question is how
much of the event’s activities will be held as planned or have to be altered
based on statewide pandemic restrictions.
Jones, executive director of the council — which puts on the annual festival —
said what format the festival takes will all be dependent upon where the state
is on Gov. Roy Cooper’s COVID-19 restriction plan.

At present the state is in Phase 2, which limits outdoor gatherings to 25
people and indoor gatherings to 10, in addition to requiring individuals to
wear masks and practice social distancing for many of those events. On Aug. 5,
the governor announced he was extending Phase 2 until Sept. 11, to see what
effect reopening schools and colleges had on the state’s virus numbers.

Jones had hoped to have a more definitive answer on this year’s Mayberry Days
in mid-August, but the governor’s moves have left her and the festival
organizers in limbo, though determined to hold the event in some form.

“We have the exact same position we had before, whatever the guidelines, we
will honor them,” she said Thursday. “Whatever it takes to do that, we will do,
but we have a number of events that can go on if the current guidelines, if he
says we have to keep these in place.”
Among those activities that can go on even under current guidelines are some of
the fan favorites — the youth trivia contest, the World Championship of TAGS
(“The Andy Griffith Show”) Trivia, apple peeling, pork chop eating contest, the
cornhole competition, the Mayberry Days hay bale toss, and others.

“Fans really enjoy those … all those things we do around the playhouse can
still go on.”

In addition, Jones said she and other organizers have added a few indoor
activities that can include larger or smaller numbers of people dependent upon
the statewide guidelines in place at the time.

Among those are guided tours of the Andy Griffith Playhouse and the back stage
area there, as well as new exhibits that will be on public display for the
first time. One of those exhibits is called Betty Lynn’s Hollywood Squares,
which will be on display as part of a painting class offered during the
festival.

“Betty was a painter, and most people don’t know that,” she said of the Mount
Airy resident and actress who played Thelma Lou. “We have a TV screen in that
visual arts studio, the video with Betty talking and showing the things she
painted, so folks can find out a new talent of Betty Lynn.”
The tours, classes, and exhibits will be limited to 10 people, including the
tour guide, under the present state guidelines. If the more relaxed Phase 3
guidelines are in place, those tours and exhibits will be able to accommodate
more individuals.

Each year there’s generally a silent auction put on by one of “The Andy
Griffith Show” fan clubs, but this year Jones said they will be holding a live
auction at the amphitheater, with proceeds going to the arts council. She said
bidders will be able to maintain social distancing at the amphitheater.
The annual golf tournament, The Emmett, will likewise be held, though there
could be some limitations on how many individuals can ride each golf cart. At
present, only one may ride in each, with the exception of two per cart if they
are family members.

As for the various shows, concerts, and the parade — the fate of those
components of the festival won’t be known until Sept. 11. If the state moves to
Phase 3, she said most of them will be held, but if Phase 2 restrictions are
extended, most of those will be cancelled. “Betty Lynn and squad cars will be
driving around town waving to people,” she said, but the large official parade
held each year will have to be cancelled.

While the festival has grown to a full week in recent years, with concerts,
shows and other activities starting on Monday, the official Mayor’s
Proclamation for Mayberry Days still takes place on Friday of the festival
week. That ceremony is still on target for this year.

“Being in the amphitheater, we can socially distance,” Jones said.

With the uncertainty comes an equal amount of questions about what guests will
be able to attend. Not only will some of the musical guests have to wait to see
if their concerts will be allowed, many of the other guests won’t know about
cross-country flights and travel options until later in September.
“That’s just something they’re going to decide at the last minute,” she said of
the affected guests. “They’re going to hold on until the last minute

Mayberry Days 2020 report

2020-10-23 Thread Janet Anderson
I just wanted to give my report on our Mayberry Days experience this year.
Things have been quite hectic both at work and home, so forgive the week's
delay. I know a lot of people did not make it this year due to the pandemic
who otherwise would have gone, but we made our lodging reservations, bought
show tickets, and arranged for time off from work before the virus became a
thing, so we decided to go ahead as planned. We were only able to be in town
Friday and Saturday, as it takes a full day of driving for us to get there and
another to return home.

Friday's weather was poor -- cool and rainy off and on. But jackets and
umbrellas gave us some protection. We attended the Mayor's Proclamation, where
the lack of guest stars was evident. Then we did some shopping on Main Street
for Mayberry items (got a TAGS 60th anniversary mug with all 249 episodes
listed on it and a similar T-shirt, among other things). We also picked up our
"Mayberry Man" merchandise. Ray and I had lunch at The Loaded Goat, which was
the first time we had eaten together in a sit-down restaurant since the
lockdown in March. We wore our masks until our food arrived (which was
delicious!). We had bought tickets for LeRoy McNees's show, but it was
cancelled. We took a squad car tour in the afternoon, a first for us. We had
always wanted to do it, but there are usually so many people wanting rides that
it's hard to get in. We figured the light attendance on Friday was a good
opportunity, despite the dismal weather. Larry was our driver and was very
friendly and entertaining. We stopped in at Opie's Candy Store afterwards and
had ice cream. If you are a chocolate fan, go there and get the Smoky Mountain
Fudge. It's wonderful! Of course, we couldn't miss the World Championship
Trivia contest. I think this was the third time I've participated. The
questions this year in the qualifying round were pretty hard! Many of them
asked for names of unseen people mentioned only once in passing. Those don't
normally stick in your brain, and I didn't do any preparation at all for the
contest. Anyway, I got six right and came in fourth behind Jeff Gossett.
Forget who the top two were. Maybe someone can remind me. They were the only
ones who were allowed into the final round. I didn't think about it until
afterward, but we had no group photo for the WBMUTBB? chapter as we normally
do, but I'm assuming this was because of the need for social distancing. In
the evening, we attended a show by Tim White and Troublesome Hollow (formerly
the VW Boys). We enjoyed the bluegrass music. After the show, Ray bought two
of their CD's and they threw in a free "Eat More Possum" bumper sticker. I
don't know if Ray will be brave enough to put it on his van!

The biggest disappointment was the cancellation of the parade on Saturday
morning, so we lounged around and didn't come into the heart of town until
lunch time. It was a beautiful day, in much contrast to Friday. In fact, it
was the most pleasant weather we've ever experienced at Mayberry Days -- sunny
but not hot and humid. I figured attendance would still be sparse due to the
parade being cancelled, but we were surprised at the large number of people
strolling Main Street. I'm sure the merchants were pleased! Due to Covid 19
restrictions, Prof. Brower's Lecture was divided into two shows, and we were
assigned to the 3:00 show. We got seats front and center. Unfortunately,
because no guest stars were present, Neal Brower didn't have anyone to
interview, as is his custom, so he talked instead about how he came to be a
TAGS fan, write a well-regarded book about the show (Mayberry 101), and teach a
community college course on TAGS for many years. He discussed how he came into
contact with various people connected with the show and described some of his
experiences with them. It was really quite interesting. After the lecture, we
headed to the amphitheater for the annual meeting of TAGSRWC. On our way, we
stopped and purchased our official Mayberry Days shirts from the Surry Arts
Council. Since Jim Clark was absent this year, Allen ran the program. Chapter
reports were given, and some awards were handed out. Eric Lowry (Mayor Pike)
won the Mayberry Friendship Award, and Dewey Lamb won the Jim Schwenke Memorial
Award. Both were well deserved. After we grabbed a bite to eat, Ray wanted to
go back to Opie's for more ice cream. I really was not hungry, but I made the
sacrifice for his sake and had some more Smoky Mountain Fudge. That evening,
we attended the revamped version of Col. Tim's Talent Time, which was held at
the Earle Theatre instead of The Andy Griffith Playhouse. Since there were no
guest stars to participate, the tribute artists took up the slack, and Michael
Hoover (Elvis) had a bigger part of the show. It was all very enjoyable. My
only quibble is that the last part of the

Mayberry Days 2020 report

(I tried sending this over a week ago, but I never saw it appear in the digest.
So I'm giving it another whirl.)

Alcohol in Mayberry ?

2020-10-23 Thread H S
In Season 1 Episode 11 Ben Weaver brings in Sam a moonshiner. Andy wants to let
him go and makes excuses for him. Ben then says No sir, I'd like to see how
forgiving you'd be if you had a store that sold spirits and half the county was
cutting in on your sales by making their own again(st) the law.
Seeing that Ben was the one bringing the moonshiner in and brought up what
appears NOT to be a hypothetical situation, would you be persuaded to believe
that alcohol was being sold in Mayberry ( by Ben Weaver ) ?

2020-10-14 Thread Jeff Koontz
For those of you who enjoy TAGS trivia, be sure to listen to this week's
podcast. https://imayberry.com/podcasts/

I was there in person and only got one right (of which I was quite proud). I am
please to report after listening to Allan go through the questions again, I got
the same one right the second time!

Congratulations to Jim Sherrill for his 5th consecutive win.

Mayberry Days

2020-09-29 Thread ctmidway58
Looking for some good reports from fans who could go! My oncologist said to
stay out of crowds and restaurants during this virus, so following his orders,
I did. Had to stay home, but hopefully next year we get to use our Col. Tim's
tickets!
Age is creeping up, and who knows just when our last time to go will be. We
will go as long as health allows and enjoy seeing all the old friends we've
made over the years.
Sounds as if the Live Auction may be the thing of the future! That way nobody
can outbid you at the last second so you can't counter-bid! YUP!! comes to
mind!!
So,hopefully next year, we'll see all of you again. We will pass thru soon when
we go to Fancy Gap and stay at Grassy Creek Cabooses. Sounds interesting!
Welford TheCameraNuttt and Carol, who's put up with me 56+ years!!

MAYBERRY DAYS 2020

2020-09-28 Thread Ben Currin
Even though Mayberry Days had to be downsized due to the Corona Virus, Tanya
Jones & her Surry Arts Council Staff did not want to throw the towel in &
cancel this annual event altogether, and wanted to have something for the
fans coming to Mt Airy. Having said that, the town prepared for this, and
what a weekend everyone had Thanks to all who worked to make Mayberry
Days happen, to include all of the downtown merchants, and to all the
"tribute artist" who stepped up to the plate to mingle & entertain the fans,
and most of allthanks to you-"the FANS"!!! With all the civil unrest
going on in our country (violent protest & riots) , the wildfires wrecking
havoc, and the corona virus taking it's toll , all of the people who came to
Mayberry this week-- stepped back into a simpler place , & time

The Baldwin Sisters in Mayberry

2020-09-28 Thread Harriet Browder
> Helen Kleeb (Jess Morgan's wife) plays Mary Jackson's sister.

Yes, she was Morgan's wife in Andy and the New Mayor. Funny how similar the
Baldwin Ladies are to the Morrison Sisters but almost a decade apart in episode
airings.

Harriet, the chicken thief, but not on Walton's Mountain. That's Yancy Tucker's
night time side job, stealing chickens from those who have plenty and leaving
them with those who have none.
