Writers
I enjoyed listening to Allan's two-part TCNW programs on the TAGS writers. When Everett Greenbaum talked about naming some characters after his neighbors when growing up in Buffalo (where I'm writing from), I remembered that in "Man In A Hurry", when Mr. Tucker broke into the telephone call between the Mendlebright sisters, one of them asked him if he was one of the "Buffalo Tuckers". Since Everett Greenbaum co-wrote this episode, I figure he must have snuck in this reference to his boyhood hometown. Different writers - same plot
I was watching an episode of "Gomer Pyle, USMC" a couple nights ago entitled "Marry Me, Marry Me", where a woman tried to trick Gomer into marrying her, hoping for a settlement if he didn't.. Her "brother" was actually her husband. The similarity to "Barney on the Rebound", which aired 5 years earlier, was striking - a young woman tried to trick Barney into marrying her, and her "father" was really her husband. Even though the writers were completely different, it's clear that they really liked the original TAGS storyline, Joe Suszczynski Grand island, NY ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
The TAGS writers
Eric this issue has been discussed at length at various times on the Digest and it is an interesting thing to ponder...Janet Anderson We all agree i think that things did change from the BW episodes to the color and we all have our thoughts as to why. I agree with janet in that most of the BW writers were absent during the color episodes. another factor would be that a lot of the BW episode writers wrote several scripts and some even wrote several together so the comedy flowed much better. Then in the color episodes most writers only wrote one script. There were about 50 writers all together and most of them seldom if ever met another writer..So unless they followed the show they wouldn't have the knowledge of how to blend their writing with others. I think this explains the many controversies we find in the show such as where Raleigh was and how long it took to get there and how far it was from Mayberry and etc. From what i understand a writer would submit a plot or idea and a meeting was held by the producers and directors with the writer(s) to discuss the idea. Once it was accepted Andy and a few of the cast would get involved and carry the idea further...I'm not swearing this is absolute but it's my take and offering to the discussion. A challenge for you writers
Being on total bed rest these last few weeks I've had time to think. I come up with ideas but have trouble getting them onto paper. My latest idea is this: a story about Mayberry told from Gomer's POV. Picture it: 1984 Gomer is home from the Marines with his wife Lou Anne Pyle nee Poovey. Due to Lou Anne's female issues they'd adopted a cute little girl back in CA and retired to NC where he works with Goober at the fillin' station. Can somebody write up their own Gomer returns from the marines story? I know Andy, Helen, Floyd, Barney, Aunt Bee have moved away but you could incorporate Sam, Howard, Clara Edwards, etc. Even minor characters such as Charlie Foley, Flip Conroy the druggist where Opie sold sodas, malts, perfume could be used. Thank you to those who can write a good tale Marie ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
WRITERS
Barney was no writer according to Andy, even though he knew how to Fade In. But hey, that lady from New Hampshire was no writer either but she still wrote that Peyton (peeton) Place! Quotes From Famous Writers
Here is another quote from a famous writer. In the episode Opie Loves Helen, Barney asks Opie if he knows any poems. Opie proceeds to recite The boy stood on the burning deck. This is the start of the famous poem Casabianca by Felicia Dorothea Heman. Orville Hendricks - The Butter and Egg Man - The only poem my boy Evan can recite begins with There once was a man from Nantucket. _ Hotmail: Free, trusted and rich email service. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/201469228/direct/01/ ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Quoting famous writers
Several famous writers were quoted on the show. Let's see how many we can think of, Well, Barney indirectly referenced Dickens when he said its like a tale out of two cities and George Bernard Shaw was paid homage to by My Fair Ernest T Bass with Ernest T Bass playing the role of Eliza Doolittle. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was prominently featured. Barney's The quality of mercy quotation is from Shakespeare And I believe Ernest T's I aint talkin, I aint talkin. The more you're askin the more I'm balkin may also be Shakespeare. But I'm not real sure about that one. :) Doug Johnson You know Andy, if you wrote this into a play, nobody'd believe it. _ Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft’s powerful SPAM protection. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/201469226/direct/01/ ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Famous Writers
Several famous writers were quoted on the show. Most of the time Andy did the quoting. Let's see how many we can think of, and I will start when Andy quoted Shakespeare when he told Opie the story of Romeo and Juliet. Then he later on quoted from Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem The Concord Hymn when he told the boys the story of the shot heard round the world. Orville Hendricks - Butter and Egg Man - I often quote H.G. TAGS sightings--Writers
A few months back TVLand had a marathon for the show M*A*S*H. I just got a chance to watch some of them in the last few days. Its always good, of course, to see TAGS guest stars William Christopher (Doctor and Tax man) and Jamie Farr (Gypsies) as Father Mukahey and Klinger. I was pleased to notice another TAGS connection I had never seen before. ( I think they are doing MASH again this weekend) A very famous episode Abyssinia Henry: was written By Everett Greenbaum and Jim Frizzell. These veteran TAGS writers scripted the touching episode when Colonel Henry Blake, played by McLean Stevenson, gets to go home, only to have his plane shot down over the Sea of Japan. Leave it to TAGS writers for a touching moment on a wild show. Abyssinia, of course, is also used on TAGS. Abyssinia. See ya Somoa. Someone asked a few days ago about Eli nor Donahue. Yes, she did leave voluntarily after Season One. She said at a reunion event once that it was just a time In her life that she needed to do something different. I sensed that she regretted leaving as she did, but she needed a break form TV at that time. TVLand, tough topic. How a brother programs is his business, I guess. I am thankful that they continue to show the Andy Griffith Show. I respect those who want to protest their other programming choices. All together now 'Row Row row your boat, Gently down the stream..
