text and a few h variants - which is pretty minimal. I am
between websites at the moment, though I am planning one as
quickly as I can make it. Which is why I'm quite alarmed by this
problem which just shouldn't be

There's nothing wrong with the exclamation mark -that's a valid DOCTYPE.
