Depending on the complexity of the image it could be either format.
The more complex an image is in terms of number of
colors/graduations of color the more likely jpg will provide better
results.
I am always surprised at the visual quality on screen of so little file
information. As Eddie points out, with the Save for Web choice on the File
menu you have a wide set of choices to play with (probably more with PS 7
than 5.5) and about the same with Image Ready.

On another angle (not that I'm an expert or anything), gif is limited to 256
colors. Jpeg is limited to 24-bits(?) [maybe 32-bits or 4.29 billion], but
it uses 'lossy' compression

Which version of IE are you using? Because I have been using PNG for a couple of years
and I
believe it worked with IE 5.01 and I know it surely did with 5.5.

why don't you simply try both and see which one gives you an image
Slightly on a tangent - There's some useful Photoshop freebies at
http://graphicssoft.about.com , plus good tutorials on other graphics
packages too - I've just been looking at masks for decorative edges on
photos which I've earmarked as 'might come in handy' on other projects.
