[libreoffice-website] VM migration - anything productive on them?

2011-10-18 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

we're in the progress of migrating one of our servers to a new machine,
and would like to replace the virtualization solution used by LXC.

Currently, we have vm1-vm4.documentfoundation.org with IP addresses of
188.40.32.161, 188.40.32.162, 188.40.32.163 and 188.40.32.185

Is there anything critical that is in productive use on one of these
systems at the moment, or can we temporarily suspend the VMs for the
migration?

- I recall that Litmus might still be inside such a VM. (@Sophie, Christian)

- The Silverstripe test instance is as well, but I guess it is not
ultra-critical? (@Christian)

- How about the gerrit test instance? Is it in production use? (@Björn)

Anything else? I checked the DNS entries and found nothing else.

Thanks,
Florian

that would be great, indeed. :) Can you let me know when this is finished?

if possible, I'd like to keep that as a virtualbox instance / even
create a 32bit VM of it that I could clone back and forth.

Any objections of having it as LXC? Anyone knows if there is a converter
for VirtualBox to LXC? Cc'ing Alex, who might know.

The only production part of the instance of silverstripe in pumbaa
is the moderation-helper gadget for gmail
(also available standalone:
http://pumbaa.documentfoundation.org:7780/mod or as it is used in
gmail sidebar: http://pumbaa.documentfoundation.org:7780/mod/gmail )

Can we maybe put that somewhere on our main website?

2011-10-18 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
Why not setup xen. Yes its more work but the advantage of this is you
can set up LVM to allow for the vm's to grow and allocation of disk
space isnt static. one thing that cant be done is shrinking of a vm.

Ubuntu 11.10 has a very easy to use provisioning system as well as web
based vm management and monitoring such as nagios infrastructure monitoring.

Hi,
there is no direct migration path as LXC are only containers running
on the host filesystem.
It is also hard to mount the vdi hdd-image, so copying existing
important data should be done using scp/rsync from the old vms to grisu,
where the files can be simply moved to the rootfs directories of the lxc
containers.

Alex

Hi Jonathan,

LXC is a fast and lightweight solution that works with the default
kernel, can use the host's filesystem or lvm or files as rootfs and
provides very easy setup and finegrained rights management.
Also the configuration of a DomU on a Hetzner server requires quite
annoying routing and gateway setups to prevent the packages being
silently dropped by Hetzners switches.

Alex

[libreoffice-website] Lost content in wiki

2011-10-18 Thread Otto Kekäläinen
Hello,

This morning I worked for about on hour on the page
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/FI/Median%C3%A4kyvyys

Unfortunately it got removed (I don't know by who) and recreated by
other persons today. Is there some way to recover the original
version? At least get the data back to me personally?

I'm somewhat pissed my work got lost and I wonder why there is no
revision data anywhere. I helped the Finnish team with a press release
on yesterday and today and the page had some real content that is now
lost.

Thanks for you help!

it has been deleted by accident but it has already been restored.

As you say - the logs (at least the public ones) doesn't show anything

Re: [libreoffice-website] Lost content in wiki

2011-10-18 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

For just that type of thing, I do my work offline as much as possible,
then upload it.

Then I save the page's html file offline.

I hate it when someone can just wipe out my work. I had a cute
college student wipe my half semester length project off the mainframe,
just to prove it to his friends. The professor was not amused and I had
to type it all back in within 1 week to get it excepted. I was in a
sling at the time and my professor would not take that for an excuse,
but the guy who did it failed out right then and there since the
professor would no longer take his work after he wipe out mine.

So, on that day, I learned a valuable lesson. If you can back up your
work. Back then hard drives were 3 and 4 pizza size platters holding
about as much a 10 to 20 meg, and there was not backup space for
students, or use of the tape system if you could buy your own reel. No
floppies then.

Now, I do my best to back up all my work, just in case some jerk decided
he was like the college guy and wipe my work off the system. Now that I
have two 1-TB drives and one 2-TB drive mostly filled, I have to somehow
get the money to buy enough external drive space for 2 complete backups.

So, I learned my lesson, and the jerk learned his. I wish modern day
jerks would learn it to.
