[weewx-user] Re: Image plot timespans

2016-12-13 Thread gjr80
In a word no it can't be (simply ie without getting your hands into some
code) done as weewx stands now. The way I think of it is weewx is fitted
'for but not with' generating plots(images) over an arbitrary period (ie a
user specified start and stop) . Essentially what is needed to do it is
there (after all wee_reports can generate a report as of a specfied
timestamp). If you were keen and with a bit of analysis of wee_reports (its
not that big or complex) and reportengine.py you could achieve something
along the lines of what you seek.

As for whether weewx will provide that functionality that's one for Tom,
though I suspect there are other fish to fry at the moment.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Frustrating install of Weewx on Raspberry Pi 2

2016-12-13 Thread Andrew Milner
Whether it's a vehicle handbook, wiring diagram or software user guide RTFM
has the same meaning .

Weewx is software - electronics is hardware - firmware sits in the middle
.. RTFM applies to all .

Mechanics need skills to recognise nuts from bolts
Engineers need skils
Software engineers, who used to be called programmers, need skills
Keeping systems running 24/7 takes patience. Recovering from breakdown
takes forethought and planning before the catastrophe hits. Taking on a
computer controlled 24/7 weather station may take more than just "trying a
hand with electronics"

The skills are all different, the manuals are all different

You may find that you will also need to read manuals or do online courses
for computers, Linux, housekeeping, systems etc etc etc ...

Have fun, enjoy, and keep on RTFMs over and over again

[weewx-user] Re: How to wipe out bad rain data

2016-12-13 Thread Andrew Milner
What I usually do when removing/editing the archive is:
1. Stop weewx
2. Edit the archive
3. Drop daily
4. Delete ALL NOAA files
5. Delete ALL .png files
6. Delete ALL .html files
6. Backfill daily
7. Restart weewx

Probably a bit of overkill in that sequence - but it stops me getting
confused and misled by old stale graphics etc ... and ensures that what I
see is the result of the current state of the archive

[weewx-user] Re: Weewx-wd StackedWindRose fails on import PIL modules

2016-12-13 Thread gjr80
Well on first look it looks like the overrides in weewx.conf are not being
picked up, looking closer at the stacked windrose generator code I can see
that the overrides are being picked up but the generator never does any
conversion of the raw wind speed data from the database. In terms of
effects, this means the windrose would always use the speed units that are
used in the weewx database (for most this is mph). Not sure how I missed
this, that generator was written over 2 years ago and I distinctly remember
testing the units - perhaps it coincided with changing database units on my
then test system - I do remember doing that a few times. No matter.

To fix the issue just move aside your current
bin/user/imageStackedWindRose3.py then download the latest version of the
file from bitbucket. Easiest approach to downloading is probably using wget
- this command should do it:

$ wget -P /var/tmp https:
//bitbucket.org/ozgreg/weewx-wd/raw/bc5c32cd97e5ec7f81ea8f83eb0edb2f241eaa3f/bin/user/imageStackedWindRose3.py

Note this file has the import Image/ImageDraw fix from a few days ago so
that issue should not give you any more grief. Thanks for pointing out the
issues.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Is it worth swapping from fine offset to Davis Vantage?

2016-12-13 Thread Les Niles
One of the factors that led me to go with Davis is the wind update rate. When
it's really blowing it's usually pretty gusty and I want to see something
approaching real time. I'd never believe an anemometer that's only showing 30
second averages or even 30 second latency. Also, after doing some research,
and my own experiments with stand-alone thermometers, I decided that a
fan-aspirated radiation shield was going to be necessary to get reasonably
accurate temperatures.

That pretty much means a VP2. The other problem with integrated instruments
like the Vue is that the anemometer really should be sited differently than the
temp and rain collector. My anemometer is 25' above the roof, on a pole that
couldn't support an integrated instrument package (and that would be a bad
place to measure temperature anyway). The rain collector and thermometer should
also be sited somewhat differently but putting them together is not so much of
a compromise. So while the Vue may measure accurately, putting all the
instruments in one package ends up making the weather data less accurate than
it could be.

[weewx-user] Re: Is it worth swapping from fine offset to Davis Vantage?

2016-12-13 Thread ponolan
Interesting graph, and much closer than I'd have imagined. Sorry, I meant
to say to say side-by-side *for co-located systems*. The other killer
advantage of weewx is the support offered here.

However, the question is really, what's the alternative to the FineOffset
WH1080 and variations thereof. Apart from the USB port lockup it's
serviceable enough with replaceable parts, for now. What we, well some of
us, would like is hardware to complement the Pi and weewx. I have a
bookmark somewhere of a blog post of someone who was doing it all DIY from
first principles but I'd rather just buy a "VW" that works (not a Rolls
Royce). It's certainly been interesting to see the reports of driver
problems with other hardware. Working with weewx is now a requirement for
me and I wouldn't consider anything that doesn't. Thanks again.

downloads any that have a timestamp later than the last timestamp in the

It only gets called when a new archive record appears. In your case, the
logger was not recording any new records, hence none was put in the
database. Now that you are using software record generation, it should be
getting called.

details about the conf-file are to be found here

in earlier days of installing and using software a common word was rtfm, but
nowadays this is no more political correct ;-)

take care which user you are using to edit the files. Via commandline "sudo" is

hello Sathish,

I would suggest you read the weewx manual first (link at the bottom). All the
questions you've asked are explained there in an easy-to-follow manner.
Including the required skills anybody wanting to use weewx needs to have, quote:

You should have the following skills:

- The patience to read and follow this guide;
- Willingness and ability to edit a configuration file;
- Some familiarity with Linux or other Unix derivatives;
- Ability to do simple Unix tasks such as changing file permissions and running
commands;
- No programming experience is necessary unless you wish to extend weewx. In
this case, you should have some familiarity with Python

The command as given in the instructions is:
sudo dpkg -i weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb

unless you had renamed the file somehow. If you had copied/renamed the
original file that could be the cause of your problem. Try with the
original file as per instructions.

did delete the reorts and they were regenerated with incorrect data then
you still have incorrect data in your database. The NOAA format month and
year reports pull their data from the daily summaries so no there is not
'--drop-daily' and '--backfill-daily' specifically for yearly data.

If the NOAA format month or year reports are showing incorrect info there
is incorrect data in your daily summaries, and since the daily summaries
were recently dropped/backfilled from the archive there must still be
incorrect data in your archive.

Afraid you are going to have to track down the remaining incorrect data in
your archive table, then drop/rebuild the daily summaries and then delete
the NOAA format reports. The offending NOAA format reports will give you an
idea when the incorrect data occurred (within a month I expect for the year
report). Since the values displayed in the report are aggregates it may
take a bit of effort to track down the incorrect data.

2016-12-13 Thread vk3anz
Thanks - I managed to get that to work.

At first I tried just setting the values to 0 but I needed to set them to
NULL (as per the instructions - I know!!!) before the next report would set
the 'Month' displays to sensible values.

However the 'Year' summaries is still out. Is there an equivalent to
'--drop-daily' and '--backfill-daily' that works for the yearly data?
