Get a power pack with "pass through charging". Cheap  and easy battery
backup. If your card is ~yr old you are on borrowed time IMHO. SSD would
save a lot of headaches.

You're going to want to replace that SD card sooner rather than later,
if you found some files corrupted after a power hit.

I went to SSD. They are so cheap now at the size we use. That SD card
will bite you and it is painful.

Sure, the Pi 4 is capable of drawing more, but will it do so for the
workload needs of WeeWx and related SW?

For one thing the Pi 4's new SoC is on paper 2-3x as efficient as a Pi
3, so things may either run ~2x as fast or waste fewer cycles getting
the job done.
Only way to know is to run exact same OS version and software stack on
two different units side-by-side, and measure how many watts they're
actually pulling nominally and during peak times and actually compare
the two.   YMMV.  =D

I'm holding out for the 4 GB Pi 4, which is out of stock already,
where I live.
Not needed for WeeWx, but as my main development platform, while a
slower Pi Zero runs the code developed and unit tested on the Pi 4.

I sure do like having a faster box so compile times are faster.  =D
And to that end, eventually there will be a 64-bit Raspbian on the
official support train, in which case the additional memory will get
me past some hurdles where the 2 GB virtual memory per process
currently has me shutting off SW features that gcc/ gplusplus can't
manage to build with only 2 GB VM.

But I digress.  ;-)

\Leon

Re: [weewx-user] Total newbie - WeeWx not uploading at all after being great on Raspberry Pi

2019-04-13 Thread Robert Lorenzini

Here is what I do. Someone please correct any errors.
stop weewx   sudo /etc/init.d/weewx stop
remove power to  Van2
restart and set time on Van2
check time on Pi is correct or reboot and wait until it is correct.
restart weewx   sudo /etc/init.d/weewx start
watch syslog for Pi d/l from Van2 sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

sometimes the data has to be cleared from Van2  ( search doc)

I recommend using a power pack with "pass through charging"
for a cheap UPS and a SSD for the Pi. Those cards all die
at some point and a cheap drive will save a lot of time and
frustration. A hardware realtime clock would have saved you
all this trouble. After an interuption the Pi and Van2 will
not have the same time and will be unable to d/l.

AFAIK, I will have to change path //home/weewx/ to //etc/weewx/ and
use /systemctl restart weewx/ for restart Weewx.

Something else?

I should probably back up the micro SD card, since it's been in use

This thing has not stopped working.  No outages.  Uptime runs from
whenever I do an apt-get update to the next time (I always reboot
after doing an upgrade because that's one of the times weewx crapped
out, when I updated some system stuff).

I have no experience with other systems.

anyone has any other suggestions for a very reliable mini computer

I would like to warn you about running on an SD card. I ran Weatherview
for 5 yrs + on
a Linksys NSLU2 with an old laptop hard drive that must have been 4
years old at that
time. I got worried and switched to a Pi with a recommened SD card. That
lasted 6 mo.
I'm now here on Weewx with the Pi and a SSHD. I renamed my old DB and
all was

good to go. Thanks folks.
