It represents an alternative to SVG which is less powerful but more compatible since Webfonts can work in most browsers (desktop and mobile). Looks like something we should open up a new bug on integration into ResourceLoader for. We could probably do something really nice making it easy for skins to enable those and switch icon fonts. Though there are plenty of spots we're still going to need svg for. Images that aren't one colour silhouettes. And of course actual uploaded svg images. Also that author seams to be trying to short shrug off the possibility of flaws and pretend that none exist without letting anyone else have a say or letting the reader make their own decision on what disadvantages/advantages they want: - Icon fonts are 1-color silhouettes, so they can't be used anywhere your design calls for an actual non-simple icon. At that point you have to use .svg. - A .svg can be used as a background image, icon fonts can't. So for all the author prances about how this works in IE6... it doesn't. Because IE doesn't support :before till IE8. You 'can' use it in a way that works in IE6, but that only works if you use the gibberish inside the page content. Which of course if you do that negates his argument that this can be done in a way that's friendly to screen readers. So your stuck with either missing browser support or killing accessibility. Not a very nice tradeoff to have to decide on when a .png + .svg bgimage setup would work for both cases. - In fact, I'm very wary of his argument that this works for screen readers. He seems to be under the common misinterpretation that screen readers work like text browser and don't support css. Real screen readers nowadays work using real browsers (ie: They use IE, Firefox, etc...). This means that despite his argument that the gibberish is hidden in css it's possible that screen readers may still end up reading them. The argument that Some fonts even map the characters to the best ones possible is also flawed because a screen reader will not necessarily treat unicode flag icon the same as Flag. Browser Shots doesn't seam to want to do IE8 or IE6 right now but this is what his page looks like in IE7: http://api.browsershots.org/png/original/9f/9faaa11fef73f703f4b2461f489475b2.png -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Comments should be about the code, and thus done inline in the diff. Gerrit is build using Google Web Toolkit, I.E the application is technically a Java application. To change the text, we would have to change a Java property in : gerrit-gwtui/src/main/java/com/google/gerrit/client/changes/ChangeConstants.properties Then recompile Gerrit and install the resulting .war. So any customization requires us to actually fork and maintain our own copy of Gerrit. I am not sure it is worth it just to tweak a text message. [Bug 31591] Wikipedia:Contact us page is horribly formatted - new contact/feedback page
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31591 --- Comment #8 from Jon jrob...@wikimedia.org 2012-04-04 11:02:19 UTC --- The problem is that these 2 column layouts are hard to detect as they use inline styles rather than styling via Common.css . I would suggest some refactoring of the content rather than changing the mobile site to deal with this. I'm not so keen on the idea of a redirect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Contact_us is not the same as the new contact form. They are separate pages. If I link to Wikipedia:Contact_us in an article there may be a good reason. For example I might write in an article 'To report a copyright violation see the other matters section on the [[Wikipedia::Contact_us|Contact us]] page. If the user is then redirected to the mobile page this sentence no longer carries meaning. It is for that reason I think that instead of redirecting we should simply ensure that when users go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Contact_us they always get the desktop site. This is my opinion is the **right** thing to do. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 15607] Install Extension:Interlanguage on en.wikipedia
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15607 --- Comment #98 from Siebrand s.mazel...@xs4all.nl 2012-04-04 15:13:58 UTC --- This issue was discussed by e-mail between the Wikidata people (Denny), Erik Moeller, Alolita Sharma, Robla and Tim Starling end of december 2011, beginning of 2012. In the e-mail thread, I asked Denny to update the status of this issue, and he confirmed he would on 2012-01-06. I guess he didn't get to that. So here's my relevant text from that thread: As promised my feedback. I'll be short, given the earlier input, not in the least by Denny. Given the near 100 comments on bug 15607, the years of discussion that already preceeded the opening of bug 15607 in 2008 and my personal in-depth knowledge of the incredible efforts and resources that it takes to maintain interlanguage links in Wikipedia alone, let alone for Wiktionary and other projects -- SieBot has made over 10 million interwiki edits -- this is a hot topic in a part of the (very active) (bot running) community. Partly because this issue has been open and actively discussed for this long, and because of the WMDE run Wikidata project's goals and timeline, I think it's not a good idea to shepard an interim solution now-ish and try AND implement a solid future proof solution based on Wikidata before the end of 2012. Despite the relatively easy technical transition for the interlanguage extension, these types of changes require large community engagement efforts to implement successfully, and doing that twice in one year would, frankly and in my opinion, be sub-optimal use of our time. If there is substantial pressure from the Wikimedia executives, I wouldn't resign over it, but for now I would prefer to not spend my team's resources on it. Is that okay with you, Erik? I would like to ask Denny to update bug 15607 with the current insights and a timeline. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 18254] inherent article classification
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18254 --- Comment #4 from bluehairedlaw...@gmail.com 2012-04-04 15:35:40 UTC --- Maybe I can explain this better. At the moment we have a 'page_is_redirect' column in the 'page' table allowing us to quickly identify redirects in pages which link to them. At the moment this column is simply: 0 = Normal Article 1 = Redirect I propose to rename 'page_is_redirect' to 'class' and allow other values. For example: 0 = Normal Article 1 = Redirect 2 = Stub 3 = Disambiguation page And possible others. Obviously an article could only be in any one category at the same time, but I don't think there could be any page in more than one of the examples given. This would allow for colour coding for stubs (currently possible but highly inaccurate) and disambiguation page. And hopefully without increasing server overhead. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
