2009-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18243

Summary: Upload via URL: More meaningful error messages when HTTP
error encountered
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.15-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Uploading
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: sco_s...@bigpond.net.au

If I try to upload an image from (say) http://example.com/test.png or
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ab/Japon-1886-32.jpg I
get the following error message:

The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and
upload again.

This error message should tell me what really went wrong: a HTTP error.

[Bug 18242] Restore revision numbers in Special:Version

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18242

--- Comment #2 from Purodha Blissenbach
2009-03-29 03:58:47 UTC ---
I've seen several times that rev numbers were too recent, compared to
actual changes to files. I was assuming the highest rev no of the entire
repository at the time of the download was shown in Special:Version.
However, since there were no changes to files in the extension between the
download time and the most recent file change before the download,
there was no problem to me. For this extension, one could choose any
rev in between, and get an identical set of files, isn't that so?

Then it is a cosmetic, not a real problem.

The version numbers were removed because they were completely inaccurate. They
reflected the last time the extension inclusion point changed, which was
usually much less recently than other files in the extension (that actually did
something) changed.

[Bug 18242] New: Restore revision numbers in Special:Version

Several svn version numbers having preiviously been shown in Special:Version
have recently been removed. Please restore them, or, better, add them
everywhere.

If there were reasons, not to show them, e.g. to the ordinary layman,
make them available with an installation option, or the like.

Since MediaWiki, and its extensions, cannot usually be easily
"svn update"ed together, it is most useful when you can see,
if versions differ, and - roughly - since when which extensions have
not been updated. When you show MediaWikis version, the versions
of extensions should be shown as well. At least when they differ!

2009-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Large problem with vandalism patrolling because

 Product: Wikimedia

 Platform: All
 URL: http://nl.wikipedia.org
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: major
 Priority: Normal
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: lolsi...@wikipedia.be

Since a few days it is not possible to view more than 500 edits in the
Special:Recentchanges page (for resource limits?). At the Dutch wikipedia
(nl.wikipedia.org) we have a vandalism system with 'patrolled versions', and
have a backlog with +/- 2,000 pages. Our vandalism patrollers are now not able
to patroll the oldest vandalism, from 16 march (already a week more than
normal!).

It is not possible to use any other tools, only the Special:Recentchanges page
were used to do this work, and external tools (such as VPopSpeed) does also not
work. If there isn't soon (about 2 weeks from now) a solution to this problem,
some of the vandalism will stay at our wikipedia without revert, so this
problem should be taken seriously.

I have heard some wiki's also doubt with this problem, but at our system of
vandalism patrolling it is now impossible to do the patrolling work as normal,
we just can't do the vandalism patrolling properly and when there isn't a
sollution soon, it will get really, really problematic!

Strict Standards: date_create() [function.date-create]: It is not safe to rely
on the system's timezone settings. Please use the date.timezone setting, the TZ
environment variable or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you
used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most
likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'Europe/Berlin' for
'CET/1.0/no DST' instead in /home/.../includes/specials/SpecialPreferences.php
on line 1112

This is a pretty fresh standard debian installation.

there are other components here having one,

1) rename "Patroller" group in "Autopatroller"

or if you prefer
1) add the feature 'rollback' to Patroller group
2) create a new group "Autopatroller" with the feature 'autopatrol'

[Bug 18236] New: potentially insecure message in Extension:regexBlock

2009-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18236

Summary: potentially insecure message in Extension:regexBlock
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
Depends on: 18235

In Extension:regexBlock,
there is a message
regexblock-unblock-error
having a parameter $1
which is an invalid (nonexisting) user name.
Likely, it should be enclosed in
tag in the message, since it may include
arbitary code.

Needs to add the schema files the appropriate globals to do this.

Removing dependency, this can be fixed independently of a component in
bugzilla.

Maybe (likely) it ignoring the table prefix of the wiki.

sometimes evaluates to 0.33, other times to
0.330004 (the second one happens far more often). I'm not sure which
one is correct (it has the right magnitude for a floating point precision
error, 0.04 being about the 10^17-th part of 1000, and 2^53 ~=
10^16 (a double uses 53 bits for the mantissa), though as far as my
understanding of floating point arithmetic goes, that should be rounded off),
but the nondeterministic behavior is definitely weird.

[Bug 17913] Show no "← Older edit" is no older version available

function 'showDiffPage' in 'DifferenceEngine.php' should test if the oldid the
first one, and then set "$prevlink = ' ';" in the same way like $nextlink.
For example:

if ( $this->mOldRev->getPrevious() != null ) {
$prevlink = $sk->makeKnownLinkObj( $this->mTitle,
wfMsgHtml( 'previousdiff' ),
'diff=prev&oldid='.$this->mOldid.$htmldiffarg,
, , 'id="differences-prevlink"' );
} else {
$prevlink = ' ';
}

I am not so familiar with php and mediawiki, so I cannot give you a patch, only
this idea.

An idea to fix this bug: function 'addHeader' in 'DifferenceEngine.php' should
test if $diff only a html comment (by an empty diff, there is only the info
over the diff generator with leading and trailing whitespace) and then set a
message instead of the $header and $diff to clarify that there is no diff
between the revisions. Do not forget $multi.

--- Comment #9 from Andy R 2009-03-28 16:39:31 UTC

What about
This is a sentence.

This would improve usability since i.e. the Englisch Wikipedia found only this
way to include sources better:

Usability isn't a reason AGAINST, but a reason FOR a XML-like ref element.

Those using the ref tag are usually advanced users.

I mean I don't have a problem with two different widths for the thumbnails. But
when you calculate the thumbnail width and height dynamically so it should be
40k px in product (like your example), then every image will have a different
size and on articles with a lot images you have multiple images with multiple
different widths - and that will look bad.

In my opinion a fixed width doesn't look better if in turn both upright and

The output isn't the same, if, i.e. someone may have the mouse pointer over a
specific sentence and that sentence may then appear in another colour (bright
red) and the source may also be shown in a small box next to the mouse pointer.
Than that really would make a difference and help to immediately know the
source without any scrolling.

s can already have a name. I suggest to simply allow tags
that do nothing, and can be bound to refs by that name. That way, everything
works as before, but if when and where people want to make very clear what
piece of text a reference supports, then they can.

This information could be quite useful for some tools - e.g. i could imagine
something that shows the references for a piece of text ion a small tooltip
when the mouse pointer hovers over a piece of text.

The nice thing about the standard "thumb" display with a fixed width is that
articles look a lot better when there are thumbs to the right with the same
width. It would look chaotic when the width would always change randomly based
on its height.

Especially when talking about wiki-code which is meant to be easy to use, a
simple Text is _a lot_ easier to understand and to use than a
complicated structure like some text ... reference info; not to mention that both would result in the

I think the problem is a real one, even though the argument about XML is
invalid.

The point is that ... should enclose the statement that a reference
is *for*, i.e. the statement it supports, rather than the reference information
itself. That way, it would be clear which reference supports which statements.
For practical reasons however, that would make things tricky, because attribute
values are considered to be plain values, but the reference info is quite often
complex wikitext. One solution would be to split it up: some text ... reference info. Note
that the could acourr anywhere inthe text, it would be rendered at the
end. The statement tag would not be visible at all.

This would be more flexible and semantically more expressive than the current
way of doing things.

Why don't we just limit width or height, whichever is larger, to 180 px (or
another value)? This effect can already be achieved with

The element can't violate XML standards, because it's wikitext, and
wikitext doesn't pretend to be valid XML. Also, I don't see how there would be
any difference in terms of rendering between example 1 and example 2: both
would render a [1] after the second sentence.

Recommend WONTFIX.

[Bug 18232] New: file thumb size doesn't respect surface area of the file

2009-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18232

Summary: file thumb size doesn't respect surface area of the file
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Images and files
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: virtueller_a...@gmx.net

When using "thumb" to include an image into an article the size of the image is
usually calculated in dependance of the image's width. The standard width of
file will then be 180px, i.e.

180px may be appropiate for upright images but leads to very small images when
they are in a landscape format. This can be observed in "Bild1" and "Bild2"
here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbesserungsvorschl%C3%A4ge/Feature-Requests/Archiv/2009#Standardbildgr.C3.B6.C3.9Fe_bei_thumb_nach_der_Fl.C3.A4che_statt_der_Breite_ausrichten

This has led to the invention of the "upright" element:

However, why not automatically resolving this problem by using the SURFACE AREA
instead of the WIDTH of an image?

I suggest that 40.000 px² should be used for every thumb image. Both upright
and landscape format images will be converted to that size. This can be
observed in "Bild3" and "Bild4".

The problem has already been discussed in the German Wikipedia and deemed to be
necessary to be resolved:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbesserungsvorschl%C3%A4ge/Feature-Requests/Archiv/2009#Standardbildgr.C3.B6.C3.9Fe_bei_thumb_nach_der_Fl.C3.A4che_statt_der_Breite_ausrichten

[Bug 18231] New: "ref" element violates XML standards

2009-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: "ref" element violates XML standards
 Product: MediaWiki

 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: virtueller_a...@gmx.net

Usually, any XML-based markup follows this pattern: Text

However, the ref element confuses attribute and text: Attribute.
This makes it impossible to know, which sentence or paragraph of the text is
addessed by the ref element:

Example 1 (current ref element):
*This is the first sentence. This is the second sentence.Somewhere

Obviously, nobody knows in example 1, if the source references the first and
the last or only the last sentence.

Example 2 (suggestion):
*This is the first sentence. This is the second
sentence.

Here, it is quite obvious, that the source references the second sentence. This
is, because this example follows correct XML markup. Everyone knows know, where
to find the source for any remark in a text.

This problem has already been discussed in the German Wikipedia and has been
deemed to be necessary to fix it:

Several filters first warn a user and then go on to tag the edit for review by
another editor. Unfortunately, it still requires other editors to go through
the entire log of a filter. It would be very helpful if they had the ability to
not only select entries by user, article and filter, but also by the action the
filter took.

Viewing Special:Recentchanges as a logged-in user results in a huge amount of
database queries. In particular, the following three queries are run for every
row:

SELECT /* Title::loadRestrictions */ * FROM `page_restrictions` WHERE
pr_page = '142'
SELECT /* Title::loadRestrictionsFromRow */ page_restrictions FROM `page`
WHERE page_id = '142' LIMIT 1
SELECT /* Title::getLatestRevID */ page_latest FROM `page` WHERE page_id =
'142' LIMIT 1

It should be easy to merge the first two queries. Also, the results aren't
cached, which means that 5 changes to page_id 142 results in the aforementioned
query block being run 5 times, each time with the exact same results.

[Bug 18228] New: Add pagination (offset, prev/next, until/from/to) to Special:RecentChanges UI

Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: RecentChanges
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: h...@goldrush.com

Recent Changes limits were recently reduced to a maxmimum of 500, and this is a
bit low for some projects.
http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/index.php?oldid=19388#March_24

Several have suggested that Recent Changes be paginated, and I have not yet
seen an open bug for this (although bug 17749 is related and might be solved by
a good pagination system)

The best UI for this would probably be the type used on Special:Log and
Special:Contributions. The Allpages/Prefixindex next/prev, and the TablePager
big blue buttons are more for alphabetical listings and tabled/columned lists.
The UI could just add inside the existing form:

(latest | earliest) View (newer 50) (older 50) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500)

This isn't ideal for a recent changes field (where the tail end of the
information is trimmed), but it is already used by Special:Newpages so should
suffice.

Another problem, is the &from= URI already used in recent changes, has contrary
meaning to some interpretations of what it should do. The best solution
probably is to just ditch this parameter (or leave it for legacy, possibly
interpret it as an alias for ×tamp=X&dir=prev) and use the same thing done
for almost all other time based pagination: &offset=TIMESTAMP combined with
&dir=next/prev.

A rollback auto-patrols every revision, but a rollback is possible only to
revert edits by a single author: that's great, but it would be useful to patrol
even revisions by different authors (since the multiple diff lets us know if
they're fixed yet).
Actually, a rollback auto-patrols only the last edit (the revision added by the
rollbacker), if you look at the logs, even if then the rollbacked revisions are
considered patrolled. Thus, perhaps not only a link is needed.

About line 40 in RecordAdmin_body.php there is a variable
$type which is passed to the program via URL, and seems to
be inserted into a regular expresseion unescaped and unfiltered.

 if ( $type && $wgRecordAdminUseNamespaces ) {
if ( $wpTitle && !ereg( "^$type:.+$", $wpTitle ) ) $wpTitle =
"$type:$wpTitle";
 }

During tests, I could inject roughly everything via URL, and at
least break the regular expression. This is imho too insecure(tm)

The discussion (see URL) shows a clears consensus in favour of giving sysops
the abusefilter-modify user right. Some users were arguing for giving selected
trusted users this right as well, but that was not undisputed; therefore I
think abustfilter-modify for sysops is the basis all can agree to.

Empty passwords make absolutely no sense (and are disallowed on WMF wikis).
There's no reason I can see to allow them by default in MediaWiki core.

For reference, $wgMinimalPasswordLength was added in r7317 following bug 621.

I've not completely understood, why we see this message.
It's a fresh debian installation; for reasons unrelated to RecordAdmin, we had
strict warnings enabled in php/MediaWiki.
Otherwise, the message isn't shown.

Strict Standards: strftime() [function.strftime]: It is not safe to rely on the
system's timezone settings. Please use the date.timezone setting, the TZ
environment variable or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you
used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most
likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'Europe/Berlin' for
'CET/1.0/no DST' instead in
/home/.../testwiki/phase3/extensions/RecordAdmin/RecordAdmin_body.php on line

running the script

 php maintenance/update.php

creates the SQL table `drafts` without a table prefix.
Thus installations having one do not find the table,
reporting SQL errors.

[Bug 10729] Edit summary reminder preference conflicts with CAPTCHA extensions

--- Comment #4 from church.of.emacs...@gmail.com 2009-03-28 07:06:52 UTC ---
Full support, Rob.
The current user interface is extremely confusing. You click "save page", get a
warning about a "missing edit summary" on top of the page, while the edit
summary line is hidden somewhere below the edit field, and it is difficult to
spot, as it is not highlighted at all.
A small piece of Javascript code should provide more usability. For example, as
long as the summary is not filled out, highlight it in red and give a warning
message.
