Will try to get this to somebody somehow!

Original message:

Up until the last few days no problem.

I am unable to use the search on certain pages, but it works fine on other
pages.

Examples:

Works:

Doesn't work:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Independence_(LCS-2)

Also am unable to login:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLoginreturnto=Wikipedia:Help_desk

In all non-working cases:
The Search and Go buttons depress with mouse clicks but nothing happens.
Enter key has no effect.

In all working cases:

Glanced at source html, didn't see anything obvious.

I'm not convinced:

- Would be a reduction in searching functionality. Regular logs are only
searchable by user and page, abuse filter log is searchable by filter, user,
page and so on.
- Logging table does not have space for large amounts of structured data, such
as the variables which are stored in the abuse filter log.

There are probably other reasons. What reasons are there in favour of the
proposed change?

That query shouldn't quote the number. Otherwise mysql converts from text to
integer *once per row*.
It should still be using an index, but given the table size and poor optimizing
could it be just timeouting?

(In reply to comment #1)
I'm not convinced:

- Would be a reduction in searching functionality. Regular logs are only
searchable by user and page, abuse filter log is searchable by filter, user,
page and so on.

Regular logs are searchable by tag, only thing that can tag things (at the
moment) is abuse filters. So there is no loss of functionality

- Logging table does not have space for large amounts of structured data, such
as the variables which are stored in the abuse filter log.

A lot of that data shouldn't really be kept permanently anyway. IMO it should
be dropped when recent changes are, and Special:AbuseFilter/examine should
be the interface for accessing it (just needs an extra field to enter a
revision ID for those interested in a specific revision)

There are probably other reasons. What reasons are there in favour of the
proposed change?

* Consistency
* Hits would show up in IRC feed
* Would be another step towards actually making the thing usable for recent
changes patrolling
* without a separate abuse log link in contributions, people would be less
likely to be offended by hits in their log from broken filters and change all
mentions of the extension to Edit Filter, which is as confusing as it is
incorrect, as just happened on en.wikipedia.

[Bug 19416] Apply consistent borders to GeSHi-generated code blocks

2009-07-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #13 from Happy-melon happy-me...@live.com 2009-07-03 13:07:37
UTC ---
(In reply to comment #12)
Semantically, it makes a lot of sense for Geshi's output to be wrapped in a
 pre.

No it doesn't. If you want to be semantic, we should be using code (see
w3.org). While pre is for preformatted text.

It makes more sense than a semantically-meaningless div. But meh...

This puts /each line/ in a pre.

How wierd. However, the current appearance on enwiki seems to be as desired;
only the outer border is displayed on FF3.5 at least.

Please, go open a separate bug for that (making geshi borders
fake a pre style as before, or actually output a pre), it will probably be
upstream though.

For the last time, this bug is about a non-pre omni-skin border. There is
plenty of room for a separate bug for your desires. Do I have to open it for
you?

I'd rather do that than get into more of an argument, certainly. I personally
think that it's more important to actually solve the underlying issue
(undesirable lack of borders in Geshi output) than to spend time correctly
pidgeonholeing the various ways we could do so. As you say, since they're not
mutually exclusive methods, it may be clearer for them to be in separate bugs;
although we then lose all the context of the comments above. But meh again...

Is there an intention to fix this at any point?

Maybe. It needs a schema change and other stuff like that, and it seems to
have
a limited impact.

Sorry, my bad, didn't know it needed a schema change.

Its impact is limited now because of the tagging system -- revisions that trip
abuse filters that you want to monitor can be tagged, and then you can patrol
by tag rather than by filter. Tags weren't enabled yet when I originally filed
this bug, so back then it seemed a bigger problem. The other reason its impact
is limited is most people don't seem to be aware of how the whole
filtering/tagging system works and its potential for recent changes patrolling.
That's not a problem with the software itself, of course.

I'm not insisting you fix it, just wondering what the intention was so I know
what to expect (I'm torn between trying to track abuse filter hits directly or
just tracking tagged changes; the latter is fine as-is, the former would need
this to work properly and would have the advantage of being able to track
anything without having to keep requesting new tags to be added, and also of
tracking instances where a warning was shown but no action done).

True, but that interface isn't shown when following the 'examine' link on a log
entry, only when going to Special:AbuseFilter/examine.

I'm not suggesting getting rid of that interface entirely, just not showing the
'examine' link on log entries.

They don't show the show/hide elements at all I presume ? This is most likely
because you have Gadgets enabled that are not compatible with Vector yet, this
will lead to execution errors. For me a common cause here is the assessment
script due to the changed CSS id of the talk page tab.

Which brings the interesting observation... why ca-talk - ca-main_talk ?

On Special:Allmessages, the link texts do not start with capitals, yet the
pages linked to do. While this is usual on Wikipedia, on Wiktionary this is not
the expected behaviour.

Using capitals with the link texts would avoid confusion.

[Bug 19501] New: Background color of tables.

2009-07-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19501

 Summary: Background color of tables.
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Vector Skin
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: hart...@videolan.org

All tables in the content are white. This is bad, because it overrides things
like the definitions of tmbox. It should simply not be white. The css says:

/* we don't want the bottom borders of h2s to be visible through
* floated tables */
background-color: white;

That's fine and all, but if this is a problem it should be solved in a
different way. Setting a default color for a table is gonna be annoying.

I'd assume the updaters get ran in the order specified in the config, if this
assumption is wrong, the follow is false:

do_populate_parent_id get's called in the 1.13 section, but l10n isnt' created
until the 1.16 section.

These updaters dont seem to be defined for PG so I simulated by deleting the
l10n table, not run update.php but run populateCategory.php first. The
backtrace is similar as when running update.php:

--- Comment #1 from Derk-Jan Hartman hart...@videolan.org 2009-07-03

This is due to the lack of inclusion of MediaWiki:noexactmatch it seems.

I realize that this is something that the usability project wants to do, but
the wiktionaries are relying on this for their pre-filled article creation
wizard. Other projects are likely also affected. I propose the the noexactmatch
stuff is reverted until a clear alternative is drawn out or the projects
themselves find an alternative location for the wizards. To simply jank it out
like this does not seem very considerate and is catching people off guard. It
was also not really visible in the demo's of the prototype site, what effect
this would have for other projects. A more clear announcement seems warranted.

(In reply to comment #1)
 - Would be a reduction in searching functionality. Regular logs are only
searchable by user and page, abuse filter log is searchable by filter, user,
 page and so on.

Regular logs are searchable by tag, only thing that can tag things (at the
moment) is abuse filters. So there is no loss of functionality

I think that does represent a loss of functionality. However, if this were a
supplement to the full log, that'd be more than acceptable. I wouldn't want to
see Special:AbuseFilter/Log disappear, but sending extracts to the normal
log would make a lot of sense in terms of usability and workflow, as I describe
below.

A lot of that data shouldn't really be kept permanently anyway. IMO it should
be dropped when recent changes are

I agree with you here, but I don't think that's an argument for putting this
data in the normal log.

* Hits would show up in IRC feed

See bug 18080 for that; I've marked it as depending on this one (although I
guess it may be possible to implement 18080 without this one -- Andrew may wish
to remove the depends depending on any implementation plans that are made).

* Would be another step towards actually making the thing usable for recent
changes patrolling

This, I think, is the convincing argument. AbuseFilter has serious workflow
issues - making is usable for patrollers needs to be a prime objective. Sending
extracts of Special:AbuseFilter/Log to Special:Log/abusefilter would
achieve that goal at least in part. Those log entries would as I say be
*extracts* of the full log, and would simply link to
Special:AbuseFilter/Log with appropriate parameters (or maybe
Special:AbuseFilter/examine?) for anyone wanting to see further details.

Why should it match?

Because these system messages differ only in whether the block is local or
global? Of course I don't mean it should be an exact copy - it needs to say
that the block will affect all wikis.

But for example, there's no mention of adhering to policy. This makes little
difference for Wikimedia, since MediaWiki:Globalblocking-block-intro is only
relevant at Meta, and I've already changed the message, but it might matter for
third-party users. But as I say, it's utterly trivial.

Checking site_stats row...ok.
Purging caches...done.
Done.

This is the output you would expect when the bug is fixed,
maintenance/update.php does not get this far when it fails.

(In reply to comment #20)
I'd assume the updaters get ran in the order specified in the config, if this
assumption is wrong, the follow is false:

do_populate_parent_id get's called in the 1.13 section, but l10n isnt' created
until the 1.16 section.

These updaters dont seem to be defined for PG so I simulated by deleting the
l10n table, not run update.php but run populateCategory.php first. The
backtrace is similar as when running update.php:

That does not simulate anything. Only maintenance/update.php and
config/index.php will work before the l10n_cache table is created. The rest of
the maintenance scripts and the wiki itself will fail. That is not a bug.

[Bug 7098] Opening a Wikipedia article results in attempt to download gzipped version

--- Comment #48 from Henrik Nordström h...@squid-cache.org 2009-07-04

This does not look like a normal Squid behaviour.

Is there any Vary related patches applied to the wikimedia Squids?

I have a faint memory of some patches related to optimizing Accept-Encoding to
avoid having to go to the backend on each new Accept-Encoding variant...

the Unable to forward error is completely unrelated to the Accept-Encoding
issue.

Actually all along I've wanted to share my LocalSettings.php on the

OK, I could probably include() a separate file that contained the
secrets like passwords and $wgSpamRegex at little extra overhead...

[Bug 19508] New: Color combo's suited for visual impaired.

http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html

Currently Vector uses #66 as the foreground color for div#panel div.portal
h5 and #F4F4F4 as the background color. Though not bad, for the people with
visual disabilities this is not optimal. When using #44 for the headings
instead, Vector would pass all WCAG 2 standards at all resolutions and anti
aliasing usecases. The change is not very noticeable for most people, but will
likely benefit a group of users that we in general don't pay enough attention
to.

I have not checked any of the other foreground/background combinations, but
this one stood out, even with good eyesight.

Ah ha, unchecking those two choices, but mainly making both languages = zh
fixed the problem. So there you go, there must be a missing translation string
for zh-tw.

Created an attachment (id=6297)
-- (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=6297)
patch for SpecialUpload.php (revision 52760)

When the destination filename in Special:Upload is set to '0', it's considered
to be unset, and the file is uploaded, using the filename of the source file as
the destination filename. If the destination filename is '1', however, the
wiki warns that the destination doesn't have an extension. This is because
$this-mDesiredDestName is used as a boolean several times in
SpecialUpload.php, where it would be more correct to test
($this-mDesiredDestName != ), which flags both null and as empty values,
but not '0'. This is a minor bug all right, but there it is. It's present in
the newupload branch too.

that fact. Can you watchlist pros confirm that is in fact what
happens, so I can open a new bug about it.
