It appears the namespaceDupes.php script needs to be ran over this wiki.

Tried that, but apparently namespaceDupes doesn't fix this. All the pages in
question are redirects, though, and they can be moved or deleted by pageid
using the API.

[Bug 22128] New: New Feature request - multi-category timeline links for wikipedia articles

2010-01-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Keywords: crosswiki
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Interwiki links
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: keferr...@comcast.net

I am envisioning something that would look like a tapesty or mesh. It would
have multipule timelines in various categories like science, music, religion,
political, with sub categories for each like Euorpean music, Italian music,
composers, instrument makers, european religions, far eastern religions, new
world religions, etc. Each Wikipedia article would be linked to one or more
timeline(s). When viewing the timeline it can be expanded to show the various
lines and one could move up and down the mesh to view articles relating to
events that took place in the same time frame. When viewing a specific
composer, moving up and down through the same time frame would allow viewing
composers of the same time frame, musical styles and compostions of the same
time frame, instruments and makers, significant scientific discoveries,
political events, events in other regions of the world, etc. In all it would
be a way to look at information in the context of historical events and compare
events in various regions of the world during the same time frame.

Our external editor support currently exists together with API, then why not
this?

I got this idea when I was editing an image on commons: with GIMP and had
opened the image using Open Location command in GIMP but then I found it
impossible to save my change to the server directly, and I think our current
external editing implementation is ugly. This should be a replacement of the
current external editing protocol.

How is GIMP supposed to authenticate? How will it provide edit/upload
summaries? Minor edit flags? How it will handle edit conflicts? When you
realize that your way ofpage access should be able to accomplish all of that
(and lots of other things), you'll realize that you'll have to reimplement our
current API for a very little benefit, and that your GIMP will be unable to use
it anyway.

Yes. The fact that we still support it is really ugly. External editors should
be rewritten to use the API. If the API doesn't provide all features, open bugs
to add the features. As far as I'm concerned, any sort of programmatic
interface should NOT use index.php.

Agreed.

With File uploads, and full editing capabilities (and no outstanding major bugs
for the API), it's more than servicable for the functionality.

Granted, there are quite a few feature requests open, and a few bugs (non

If your goal is to host ema...@br.wikimedia.org at google you not only need
Google to accept you, but also set the MX records pointing to google mail
servers.
Perhaps the WMF could host do email hosting for you, adding @br.wikimedia.org
to their @wikimedia.org configuration.

Currently, CodeReview handles diffs for every commit. However, you cannot view
full files (except in the diff when added/deleted). Please add that capacity.
This would remove the need for a separate ViewVC install, and would allow
whole-file review in the same environment as per-diff review.

Currently, reviewers can only see changes introduced in a single revision.
Please allow viewing of arbitrary diffs so better allow reviewers to see
relevant changes together. They don't need to be able to change states, comment
etc on these complex diffs however - just view them.

I'm not comfortable allowing content/services under .wikimedia.org to be hosted
by third parties - this may well have security implications and other
complications, now or in the future. If you want services like e-mail to be
hosted elsewhere, such as Google, you should register and use another domain
for it (wikimedia.br?).

The Wikimedia Foundation currently does not have the capacity to technically
support mail or web hosting for chapters. This would be a costly and time
consuming service to maintain, whereas this is done (at large scale) very
cheaply by many, many web hosting and mail providers. If the services that we
can provide (basic wikis on our wiki platform, OTRS, etc.) are not sufficient,
then chapters should seek their own hosting solutions. This should not cost
more than $10/month, at most.

[Bug 22134] New: Citations templates

2010-01-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22134

 Summary: Citations templates
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
 URL: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/User:Rann
pháirt%C3%AD_anaithnid/Cite.php
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: easy
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Cite
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: wiki...@yahoo.ie

During a discussion on citation styles at the Village Pump on the en.wiki, a
number of editors expressed a dislike for citation templates. I greatly like
them for a number of reasons (e.g. they help users unused to citing sources to
do so properly, the lend to a consistent citation style, they make data that is
naturally suitable to being machine readable comprehendible to a machine as
discrete data, etc.).

The frequent source of the dislike mentioned by others was the time it takes a
long time to transclude many such citation templates in a heavily cited page. I
suggested enhancing Cite.php to do the citation templating.

The method I suggest is as follows:

---

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.ref name=murphy /

References
references
ref first=John last=Murphy title=Quisque Quis Orci Magna
publisher=Printing House Press location=London year=2009 page=55
isbn=978-3-16-148410-0 /
/references
---

The above example renders the citation as follows:

J. Murphy. Quisque Quis Orci Magna. Printing House Press: London. 2009. Page
55. ISBN: 978-3-16-148410-0

I have a working example of the code necessary to implement this in a
rudimentary manner at:

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/User:Rannpháirt%C3%AD_anaithnid/Cite.php

It does not break current usage of Cite.php.

I'd be happy to continue development on this if it was picked up.

You are hardcoding parameters and output. It could call a template defined in
$wgAllowCiteTemplates or a MediaWiki: message.
I'm also a bit wary of the verifying chunks of code you removed.

Your work seems to be more in line with the (abandoned) citation extension.

Re: hardcoding parameters and defining a template - indeed, its just a rough
working example. I'm not suggesting *that* as code.

The chunks of code I removed seemed to have redundancy and limited the number
of attributes to two (assumed) parameters. The new code (if I'm not mistaken)
does precisely the same thing but without hardcoding a max numbers of
attributes or assuming what those attributes must be if they are present. (I'd
suggest taking that piece into trunk regardless of opinion about templates for
citations as it would be more flexible going forward.)

I'm not aware of the citation template. What is/was it?

[Bug 22135] New: template testing option

2010-01-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22135

 Summary: template testing option
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Templates
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: wiki0...@gmail.com

It would help testing of heavily used templates if there was an option that a
group of users testing the new template could turn on in their preferences, so
that the wikipedia software would check the user space specified in this option
FIRST for any template called, then look in the regular template area.

This would ease testing of templates, in that a user could turn this option on,
and any page that was displayed would call in the test template instead of the
public template. With this option, a group of users would not have to have a
group of dummied up examples to test - they could easily test a heavily used
template for days, and more easily find problems, because they would be easily
be able to test the template on a wide variety of existing Wikipedia pages
without changing any of those pages.

The way the software pulled in templates would only be affected for those users
with this option on. No one else would see the tested template. Then when the
testing group was satisfied, they would agree to have the template moved to the
main template area and they would turn off the testing option in their
preferences.

This is something that is commonly done in other systems for the same reason -
to allow a group of users to test new programs/templates. It would be
equivalent to having certain users call in a test concatenation to test
macros in assembler language, or defining a testing path with test libraries in
front for Perl (http://perldoc.perl.org/lib.html)

I don't think that this feature will be implemented. When you browse pages, you
see cached HTML, rendered on save an re-rendered on hits once in a while.
Parsing a page and rendering it is a slow process and can take up to 10
seconds. You're proposing to re-parse everything on each pageview of some
users. Not only that will make browsing speed intolerable for them, but it will
also increase server load. Your proposal will also significantly increase read
load on database because every template has to be checked for copies in
userspace.

at this time, there is an option to disable caching in the preferences for any
user that wants to: Appearance/Advanced Options/Disable page caching.
There is also an option for purging cache as a function tab in the User
Interface Gadgets (Add a * tab to the top of the page, which purges the
page's cache when followed.) Since these are options available to any user
now, I don't think the cache issue should be a deciding factor to enable an
option that would ease the testing of templates.

(In reply to comment #3)
at this time, there is an option to disable caching in the preferences for any
user that wants to: Appearance/Advanced Options/Disable page caching.

You misunderstand what that option means. It just disables client-side caching,
but doesn't re-parse wikitext on every page view.

[Bug 22135] template testing option

2010-01-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22135

--- Comment #5 from Stmrlbs wiki0...@gmail.com 2010-01-17 20:05:48 UTC ---
I had in mind an option in Preferences that would look like this:
(*) Template Test Mode - from (specify template test area):
User:Stmrlbs/xxx

When the software came across a template a, if a user had this option
turned on, for this user, the software would first check if
User:Stmrlbs/xxx/a existed, and use this for the template. If
User:Stmrlbs/xxx/a did not exist, then the wikipedia software would
then use Template:a

This would facilitate the testing of heavily used templates, because a group
project could create a group of pages calling the heavily used template in many
various ways, and call up those pages with this option turned on to test a new
template, without needing to dummy up examples.

It would also facilitate testing changes to inner templates, because a user
would no longer need to dummy up an outer template to call the modified inner
template.

I'm pretty sure these ?match= links are not generated by MediaWiki core, so
you'll need to explain what they do and what generates them. Depending on the
answer this may or may not be a problem with Vector.

Actually.. this would be better than what I'm proposing. That way, a user
could display the page with templates in one window/tab, then display the same
page with the public template in another window/tab. Thanks. Good suggestion.

As I mentioned to Oliver on wiki, anything that expects to code particular
styles of referencing directly into Cite seems like a total non-starter. The
best that one could do is teach ref to call one or more templates automatically
and that doesn't seem like much of a savings.

Since your main goal (Oliver's) is to improve standardization, the real targets
should generally be the use and consistency of templates, not Cite itself.

Referring to on-wiki templates is one way. Using actual ('real-life') standards
e.g. APA, Harvard, etc. is another. Or a combination mix of both.

These could either be set by default (per installation) or specified
(optionally probably), possibly in the reference tag e.g.:

references style=harvard
ref ... /
/references

(...or have this choice over-rided by user preferences, as was suggested by
another user in that discussion e.g. user wants to see references displayed in
APA style only.)

If it was to be taken in to Cite, I think the real-life standards would be
the best place to start as it would give the greatest gains over templates and
would be the most immediately usable by all MW installations.

The templates represent the community's consensus about what they want
citations to look like. They are often originally based on standards but then
deviated because at some point in the past the community decided those changes
made them better. There is no reason that the templates couldn't be used to
implement letter-perfect versions of essentially any real-life citation
standard if that is what the community wants. However, first you'd have to
convince the community that they want real-life standards.

The choice to adopt referencing standards, or not, is one for the community to
make, and should generally not be enforced directly by Cite.

From the points of view of Cite, I don't think it should be enforced. This
suggestion may have come out of a discussion on WP but I making it purely in
parallel to that. I'm saying it would be a nice feature if cite could handle
basic citation meta data and spit it out in a standard format and style (not
just on WP but on other installations too).

If WP goes for a standard style or not is a different matter (and from what I
can see *enforcing* a standard style on WP looks like a non-starter).

The users who said that (I believe) blamed the DB overhead costs of
transcluding those templates many times. I don't believe the issue was one of
bandwidth.

(There would also be additional benefits to doing it in Cite. For example, a
user could override the installation- or the article-defined citation style
with a preferred style defined in their user preferences.)

After hinting by Robert, I've opened an on-wiki suggestion of this idea here:

While I haven't actually verified this, my guess is that the cite templates are
slow due to feature bloat and over-standardization.

The cite templates on enwiki include all sorts of extra parameters for things
like translations, summaries, multiple editors, etc. 90% of citations aren't
going to use more than a few key parameters, but the templates still have to
evaluate parser functions based on every possible option.

Additionally, almost every citation template is just a wrapper around
Template:Citation/core, adding a call to the meta-template for each usage
and making the other problem worse by having even more extra parameters, many
of which aren't even exposed in the standard templates.

The sample code is going to be faster because it doesn't have nearly as many
options, so it can format the citation by just concatenating parameters and
separators, and it does it all with PHP. That could still be extended to
replicate the current citation templates, but then if a wiki wants a change to
a reference format, it would have to be done by a sysadmin.

The cost of fetching the template from db is the same. If a template is used

reused.

Alex is correct, the lag is mostly the massive structure of Citation/core which
has over 200 #if branches (though only a fraction would be called during any
given execution). None of it is individually bad, but taken collectively and
called more than 100 times per article and it will really add up.

As an aside, I've been contemplating extending the parser caching of pages to
allow for per-page template caching which would allow one to bypass
re-rendering these rarely changed blocks most of the time.
