The url is constructed like : wgServer, wgScript, ?title=[localized namespace name for Special], :BannerListLoader etc etc. BannerListLoader is put there in English, causing a redirect to the localized version (ie. Should work on non-WMF wikis aswell. Could be used as a base if and when this comes to core. It's just a few lines of javascript really. Could be made even shorter with jQuery (will do that soon). Done that a few weeks ago. This script (and many others like it) float around on 100s of wikis. The thing they have in common is that they turn the index.php call into an ajax request and if it has code 200 they indicate in the link that it's succeeded. In the coming weeks I'll work in a script to do this through the api instead. We can't do an index.php ajax call in the core imho, to save resources (since calling index.php will return the entire HTML page with all the messages, preferences etc. on it – all redundant stuff not used and wasting processing time). It will also be faster for the client (since index.php takes longer to load and returns more data) and allows for better error reporting as well (depending on the status code is not reliable since a 'patrol error page' is (and should be) also code 200. Some of the ajax patrol scripts out there look through the returned HTML to see if it cointains certain words to indicate succesful/error state but this is both language dependant and prone to breakage whenever those messages are changed (either by the software or by the local wiki). It stops after two tries to avoid an endless loop. ja.wikipedia.org loads fine, so does zh.wiktionary.org and zh.wikisource.org. If I disable script (in IE8, F12 - Disable - Script), it doesn't crash. So the problem is likely some sort of bad interaction between an existing site script and some 1.17 JS changes like ResourceLoader, which combine to trigger a crash bug in IE on XP. I'd suggest that zhwiki sysops disable chunks of site JavaScript until the problem goes away. With the current design it is not possible to know what language we actually
got.
Indeed, the logic finding a message string returns a message string without any
additional information.
What was needed to treat this message string correctly are generally:
A. encoding and charset (Not a problem, we luckily now have UNICODE everywhere)
B. language - more preicisely: locale (language + area + script + orthography +
... )
C. directionality.
All of those must be known at least to render correct html with correct
character encoding and the necessary xml/html attributes:
xml:lang=...
lang=...
dir=...
set correctly for each piece in the final page.
The locale must be known so as to find the correct routines for message magic
such as PLURAL, GENDER, or GRAMMAR, formatnum, etc., and possibly int.
In a rendered page, various text from various sources comes together. Parts may
come from:
- the wiki language
- any fallback language of the wiki language
- a user language (preferences, uselang=, accept-language header)
- any fallback language of the user language
- the page language, if any (c.f. page MediaWiki:mainpage/zh)
- any user-set fallback language ( planned, see bug 11267 )
Obviously, PLURAL, GENDER, formatnum, GRAMMAR routines etc. have to match the
respective message locale each, no matter of the mix of message sources.
Obviously, this in not so for the int hack, since examples:
1. Klick the {{int:go}} button. -- (should render whatever wfMsg('go') does)
2. Block this user ({{int:log}}, {{int:contribs}}) -- (use msg language)
show diverging demand. Thus int needs a redesign.
Leaving alone int, all other demand can be met by accompanying each message
text with either:
- a link to its language-object (which knows locale, directionality, and
routines for GENDER, formatnum, etc.
- a set of attributes, at least locale (or locale + directionality) from which
the matching routines and other data can be dynamically found on demand.
Alternatively, current message texts could be replaced by a structure including
the above. In the future, this could be consequentially extended into a truly
multilingual wiki, where all pages (or sections in pages) have languages of
their own.

In HTML4 mode ref name=foo [[bar]] generates [[#cite_note-foo_.5B.5Bbar.5D.5D-0|[1]]] which functions correctly, but in HTML5 mode it generates [[#cite_note-foo_[[bar]]-0|[1]]] which of course breaks horribly. Also, in HTML4 mode ref name=foo, ref name=_foo_, and ref name=''foo'' are all distinct. This suggests maybe some named entities have crept through, or some other type of well-formedness. It would be nice if people said which exact pages failed, but it would probably be possible to figure it out. I'm guessing it's the result of messages being passed as raw HTML and sysops adding named entities to them, but it could be something else too. The easy way out would be to restore the old hack where we serve HTML5 with an HTML 4.01 Strict doctype, which is valid HTML5 but rather confusing. This is how 1.16 works by default. That way a DTD is specified, which means that non-browser UAs will parse named entities successfully. We can consider switching back to the HTML5 doctype later. (In reply to comment #12) Several problems on enwiki were caused by the difference in Sanitize::escapeId between HTML4 and HTML5 modes. Hmm. This should be disable-able by setting $wgExperimentalHtmlIds to false, leaving $wgHtml5 true (which might leave well-formedness issues). A proper fix will require some more thought, though. The changes to escapeId() are really meant for headings, but we can't realistically distinguish wikilinks meant to point at headings from wikilinks meant to point at other things. In practice, it looks like Cite is the major problem here (with the id's), and it can probably be fixed.
