Re-opening for now. I believe the request here is for
"Special:UserLogin/signup" to become (redirect to) "Special:CreateAccount".
Currently the redirect goes the other way. That's how I read comment 0 and
comment 3, at least.

Currently, the only means provided to add spambot IP's to the `globalblocking`
table is to enter each one individually from the special:globalblock page.

This is awkward for small wiki sites with few administrators. 

There needs to be a means to import downloadable lists of known spambots from
blacklist sites such as stopforumspam.com and fspamlist.com instead of having a
local admin ban each problematic IP manually. There are hundreds of thousands
of known "comment spammers" (a term which includes wiki, forum and blog
spambots); even the list of IP's global blocked from the WMF sites looks to be
a few thousand entries long.

Some ability to import a CSV (comma separated values, one long line) or plain
text file (one IP address per line) would be a quicker means to block spambots.

There is a page in namespace=0 with prefix Index

that unfortunately got stuck in nowhere land. Is there a way to move this page
by pointing at its 'curid' instead of its title? (I've recreated the page
[[wikt:id:Indeks:Bahasa Jawa]] since). If not, then that's fine.

No, based on talking to Steven before (and what he said as the first comment),
I think he is in agreement that we would to move essentially all of ACUX to
core.

There are certainly improvements that can be a made to the core account
creation hook points.  But that's not going to be the focus when moving ACUX to
core (a significant enough task on its own).

I'm going to change the title to specify core.  As Steven says, we use Trello
for some things.  However, it's fine to leave this open as a tracking bug.

Part of the reason there is no such bug is because I don't really use Bugzilla
to track what the team is actually working on. There are all kinds of outdated
and irrelevant bugs floating around components we maintain at any given point
in time. I also just find it a little silly to file "bugs" about major product
changes like rewriting the core account creation interface. We generally keep
our projects tracked on the Trello board I linked above.

In 2011, it would have been possible for session storage to expire or disappear
during the 1 hour it took to do an upload. Sessions are stored in Redis now,
which is much more reliable than using the main memcached pool. So it's
unlikely that the problem described in the original report still occurs. The
issue has apparently not been re-reported since November 2011. Marking fixed.

Uploads can be slow due to network issues. Such issues are typically transient
and should be reported on IRC to be isolated immediately. There's no way to
debug them a year after the fact.

No, $wgThumbnailEpoch has no effect when the 404 handler is used. We could
delete files from the backend based on modification time, and prevent long-term
caching in varnish with a Cache-Control header if that's not done already.

We would like to get rid of the thumbnail backend storage and use varnish only,
for various reasons. But we wouldn't try to do it with a 30 day expiry time. 6
months is probably reasonable.

This won't solve the caching issues or significantly reduce the need for manual
purging, so those bugs should be addressed separately.

If by "fixing the bug" you mean reverting the workaround so that MW will
segfault if used with PCRE 8.0.1, then we might need to wait a bit longer,
since there are still a lot of Linux servers using a distro from 2010. Once we
do switch to the new regex, we will have to add an installer environment check
for the old library version.

We had an oldid parameter for the old_id database field, so I think it made
sense for me to add a curid parameter for the cur_id database field. There were
good reasons to later rename the database field to page_id, but it was not

Dictionary entries etc. are articles, in the sense that they are represented by

That said, why is this not part of the project? If the experiments are bringing
up valid issues and useful fixes, is there no pipeline to implement them?

I'm not sure what to close this as because LATER is no longer an option and
nothing else seems appropriate given the situation - it is a 'bug' that has yet
to be resolved; this just isn't the place for it.

Isarra, I think what Steven means is that your request is valid, but as a
request for account creation internal interface/API in core to be more flexible
(or exist at all), making it easier to plug extensions on it.
This is a well known deficiency of MediaWiki, as far as I can understand, see
for instance
[[mw:Translation_UX/Development_plan#Milestone_SG4:_signup_dialog]].
You may want to create a new bug (or even MW RfC) for this, if one doesn't
exist; this would be a duplicate of it. Bug 17312 sort of asks this, I think; I
couldn't find another.

This bug can be marked WORKSFORME, INVALID or WONTFIX, but it seems quite sure
that this job won't be done as part of this project, so in this component it's
probably pointless. You may want to mark it as duplicate of bug 17312 or
equivalent, or to move it to core.

Note: all this is en.wiki-specific. Also, quite adventitious/occasional; most
of that text has been killed, as far as I know.

This is not valid for all wikis.

Cluttering the account creation interface more seems a very bad idea.
