[Bug 52313] New: HTML Email Notifications - Text snippets have weird characters
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52313 Web browser: --- Bug ID: 52313 Summary: HTML Email Notifications - Text snippets have weird characters Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: unspecified Hardware: All OS: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: Echo Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org Reporter: fflo...@wikimedia.org CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org, bs...@wikimedia.org Classification: Unclassified Mobile Platform: --- Created attachment 13024 -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=13024action=edit HTML-Email-Notification-Weird-Characters-Bug.png Some HTML Email notifications show weird characters in text snippets for talk page messages. Here are two examples from recent emails: #8226; #8212; This seems to happen when the original message includes special HTML codes. For example, here is the wiki markup for the first example (#8226, see attached): 'Testing HTML email notifications. Yay, font style=font-family:Georgia, serif;Steven Wallingnbsp;bull;nbsp;span style=color: #8080b0talk/span/font 20:15, 30 July 2013 (UTC)' ... which caused the HTML Email to display: 'Testing HTML email notifications. Yay, #8226; [' So in this case, the weird characters were triggered by this the offending HTML code: 'font style=font-family:Georgia, serif;' My proposed resolution for this issue is to not display in the notification any sentence that includes any such HTML characters -- and just show three dots instead ('...'). This text snippet is only provided as a convenience, as the preceding notification sentence carries all the essential information and links. Most notifications will not have any text snippets, so this is more of an edge case. Therefore, it seems more effective to omit non-essential information that could confuse the user for no good reason. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 51371] Request for removal of the Phonetic input layout for Odia
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51371 --- Comment #3 from Subhashish Panigrahi psubhash...@gmail.com --- Dear Runa, Thanks for writing back. I do understand the importance of the Oriya Phonetic layout as it is provided along with the mainstream Linux distributions. But the community worked on creating Lekhani based on the this layout. Lekhani is a slightly modified form of this layout and done by the community. So, it doesn't make any sense to keep two similar layouts. May be the name Lekhani could be used only in backend and would be displayed as Phonetic in every other place. If Inscript2 is replacing Inscript then it is alright to have it for now. Recently a new layout has been also proposed and so many layouts would simply confuse new editors. That's the only worry and reason of requesting for this. (In reply to comment #2) Hi Subhashish, The Oriya Phonetic layout (i.e. the layout provided by the or-phonetic.js file) is part of the m17n library. This library is heavily used to source the input methods that are provided through the mainstream Linux distributions. This input method as well as Inscript2 has been included in the jQuery.ime library to enrich the open source input method collection that are already available and in use. I'll request you to reconsider the decision of 'removing' the or-phonetic layout completely. We can perhaps ensure that the nomenclature is significantly prominent to distinguish it from the Lekhani layout. Inscript2 or Enhanced Inscript is the next edition of Inscript and will replace the older Inscript. A final confirmation is waiting on the Government of India. Since it addresses the shortcomings of the original Inscript, as a common practice it is already being shipped out in major mainstream Linux Distributions. The older Inscript still remains in the collection to handle any regression. What do you think? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 50540] VisualEditor: Display both edit and edit source links for sections without hover
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50540 Skippy le Grand Gourou lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr changed: What|Removed |Added CC||lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr --- Comment #42 from Skippy le Grand Gourou lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr --- Glad to see this report already exists. The idea of having text for VE editing and an icon for standard editing is *wrong* : you can't have two different methods (namely text and image) for advertising two options of a single choice, it's an aberration in terms of user interface (I'm no expert though), it's completely counter-intuitive. Furthermore people use to associate text *with* image (caption), which makes it even more counter-intuitive. As far as I'm concerned, I'd be satisfied if we could just switch the default editing method. That is, I don't want to use VE as a standard, but an advertisement saying it may be useful in certain situations, so I'd prefer to keep it at the hand in case I want to give it a try. However, I want the default editing action to be the standard editing. That is, I want the first modify link to open the standard editor, and the link enabled by the hovering to be the VE. Therefore, a simple default editor = standard/VE in the preferences would be enough for me. However I understand the reading issue mentioned in comment 25, so I'd prefer if the hovering was completely disabled and both links always present (possibly with the option to hide one or both in the preferences). Furthermore, I'm strongly for the idea to give the user the choice of his editor. And when I say user, I also mean new user. Not all users are WYSIWYGers, and though people seem (and they're probably right) to think that the standard editor may frighten some new users, hiding the standard editor by default may as well repel some new users. Therefore the best solution in my opinion would be to simply disable the hovering and keeping both links, with the possibility to hide one or both in the preferences. The argument that it's too many links is absurd : on a webpage there are links everywhere, internet users are used to ignore them. It's even more true for WP where almost half of words are links… -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
[Bug 50540] VisualEditor: Display both edit and edit source links for sections without hover
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50540 --- Comment #43 from Skippy le Grand Gourou lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr --- Two more comments, after reading the discussion pointed by comment 30 : - this argument from Nick White needs emphasizing : I don't think two small edit links by section headings constitute clutter. Rather it emphasises *the* key thing about wikipedia, that editing is encouraged. - the cluttering invoked to justify the hovering solution is actually an argument *against* the hovering : in any case when you hover the link the second option appears, so at one moment the same text will be visible anyway, and actually the hovering is adding a level of cluttering, blinking (including additional blinking when the hovering occurs without the user wanting to edit the section). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

If you close the dialog, deselect the element then open the save box again it appears in the same place, only based on what that element is in the view now. If you close and select a different element then save, it relates to that element. If you have not selected any elements during your edit it appears overthe save button. Steps to reproduce: 1. See the screenshot. I haven't figured out how to reliably reproduce this but the following sequence /usually/ seems to work. 1. Make one or more changes to a page in VE 2. click on an element near the left or bottom of the window (to trigger bug 52317) 3. open the save page dialog 4. with the dialog still open, scroll to the very top and very bottom of the page 5. close the save dialog without saving 6. click a different element and repeat steps 3 to 5. 7. scroll to the top of the screen and observe the position of the toolbar. If it doesn't work, try again from step 2. It doesn't always work, but actions like this do seem to trigger it more often than not. [Bug 50527] Tagging articles using old markup on VE
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50527 --- Comment #17 from kwwilli...@kwwilliams.com --- (In reply to comment #15) Chris, could you add a link to that comment. Im interested in why the nowiki edit filter isnt sufficient. It isn't sufficient because it disappoints the first human involved, this hypothetical new editor that is so confused by all of our existing material that he's errantly typing wikitext into a source window. VE could *help* him, but instead it pops a warning. The warning obviously isn't working, because we see saves of this material happening constantly. He goes ahead and saves it anyway, and he's bewildered and confused: he did just what the little cheat sheet he got from a friend told him to do, and it didn't work. It's insufficient because it requires a second human being to then review the change, figure out what it was that the first human was actually attempting, and then correct it if he can. It's insufficient because it's in support of a use-case that doesn't exist: there's no reason to put something like the Big Apple into articles. If there *were*, it's coming from an editor that is quite skilled enough to go into the source editor. If we need to support putting such things in using the visual editor, a workflow can be designed with a nowiki button to do it intentionally. Instead, James Forrester and Erik Moller have decreed that the bug not be fixed, and that volunteers should eagerly flock to monitoring the output of an edit filter that detects each and every time this happens to that these volunteers can fix it. That's repulsive. That's a level of disregard for the volunteers that work on this project that is breathtaking. It's the *reason* that the VE team can fix dozens of bugs each hour and the Wikipedia community still complains that they are non-responsive. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
