Summary: Disambiguator is totally different and wrong in
Chinese wiki.
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: REL1_21 branch
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Disambiguator
 Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: zog...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

This extension works just as the page in Mediawiki says:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Disambiguator
Special:DisambiguationPages, which lists all the disambiguation pages on your
wiki.
Special:DisambiguationPageLinks, which lists all of the pages on your wiki that
link to disambiguation pages. (This is a replacement for the old
Special:Disambiguations page which is deprecated.)

http://en.moegirl.org/Special:DisambiguationPages
and
http://en.moegirl.org/Special:DisambiguationPageLinks

Do work as it says.

However, in Chinese version, this extension behave totally different. the
Special:DisambiguationPages page in Chinese require setting of
MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage, which does not even mentioned in English
version.

Both Special:DisambiguationPages and Special:DisambiguationPageLinks shows
links to disambiguation pages. Special:消歧义页 suppose show disambiguation pages
list, not links to disambiguation pages.

[Bug 52313] New: HTML Email Notifications - Text snippets have weird characters

HTML-Email-Notification-Weird-Characters-Bug.png

Some HTML Email notifications show weird characters in text snippets for talk
page messages.

Here are two examples from recent emails:

#8226;

#8212;

This seems to happen when the original message includes special HTML codes. For
example, here is the wiki markup for the first example (#8226, see attached):

'Testing HTML email notifications. Yay, font style=font-family:Georgia,
serif;Steven Wallingnbsp;bull;nbsp;[[User
talk:Steven Walling|span style=color: #8080b0talk/span]]/font 20:15,
30 July 2013 (UTC)'

... which caused the HTML Email to display:

'Testing HTML email notifications. Yay, #8226; ['

So in this case, the weird characters were triggered by this the offending HTML
code:

'font style=font-family:Georgia, serif;'

My proposed resolution for this issue is to not display in the notification any
sentence that includes any such HTML characters -- and just show three dots
instead ('...').

This text snippet is only provided as a convenience, as the preceding
notification sentence carries all the essential information and links. Most
notifications will not have any text snippets, so this is more of an edge case.
Therefore, it seems more effective to omit non-essential information that could
confuse the user for no good reason.

[Bug 51371] Request for removal of the Phonetic input layout for Odia

2013-07-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51371

--- Comment #3 from Subhashish Panigrahi psubhash...@gmail.com ---
Dear Runa,

Thanks for writing back. I do understand the importance of the Oriya Phonetic
layout as it is provided along with the mainstream Linux distributions. But
the community worked on creating Lekhani based on the this layout. Lekhani is a
slightly modified form of this layout and done by the community. So, it doesn't
make any sense to keep two similar layouts. May be the name Lekhani could be
used only in backend and would be displayed as Phonetic in every other place.

If Inscript2 is replacing Inscript then it is alright to have it for now.

Recently a new layout has been also proposed and so many layouts would simply
confuse new editors. That's the only worry and reason of requesting for this.

(In reply to comment #2)
Hi Subhashish,

The Oriya Phonetic layout (i.e. the layout provided by the or-phonetic.js
file)
is part of the m17n library. This library is heavily used to source the input
methods that are provided through the mainstream Linux distributions. This
input method as well as Inscript2 has been included in the jQuery.ime library
to enrich the open source input method collection that are already available
and in use. I'll request you to reconsider the decision of 'removing' the
or-phonetic layout completely. We can perhaps ensure that the nomenclature is
significantly prominent to distinguish it from the Lekhani layout.

Inscript2 or Enhanced Inscript is the next edition of Inscript and will
replace
the older Inscript. A final confirmation is waiting on the Government of
India.
Since it addresses the shortcomings of the original Inscript, as a common
practice it is already being shipped out in major mainstream Linux
Distributions. The older Inscript still remains in the collection to handle
any
regression.

What do you think?

Thanks, Alex, Benny and kww, much appreciated.

Risker, we were already aware of the weird characters issue (e.g.: ' # 8226 ;

I have filed this bug #52313, so we can solve that issue as soon as possible.

Chris, could you add a link to that comment. Im interested in why the nowiki
edit filter isnt sufficient.
Preventing the VE nowiki edit is a bit rude, and is sticky tape of the problem
with the VE causing these nowikis. In VE, the user cant _see_ the nowiki
causing problem all the time. E.g. A space at the beginning of the line isnt
obviously the cause of the nowiki. unless VE explicitly tells them where the
nowiki is happening, how can we expect the newbie to figure it out.

The code updater on beta apparently delete files from time to time which cause
much havoc on the cluster.

Example:

PHP fatal error in
/data/project/apache/common-local/php-master/includes/AutoLoader.php line 1157:

require() [a href='function.require'function.require/a]:
Failed opening required
'/data/project/apache/common-local/php-master/extensions/Echo/Hooks.php'
(include_path='

/data/project/apache/common-local/phpmaster/extensions/TimedMediaHandler/handlers/OggHandler/PEAR/File_Ogg
:/usr/local/apache/common-local/php-master:/usr/local/lib/php:/usr/share/php')

The script doing the code update is in operations/puppet.git and is
files/misc/beta/wmf-beta-autoupdate . It does roughly:

cd /path/to/mediawiki git pull
cd /path/to/extensions git pull
cd /path/to/extensions git submodule update --init

It must lost connection with the NFS server from time to time :(

In a page, for example http://testgentilsvirus.changeip.org/index.php/Principal
, I am defining a text property called Resume which contains next lines and
bullets.

Then I have a template, for example
http://testgentilsvirus.changeip.org/index.php/Mod%C3%A8le:AF_P , which
displays the Resume property with #show or #ask with a table or #ask without
a table.

Then when I use the template, for example in
http://testgentilsvirus.changeip.org/index.php/ButsP , you can notice that the
#show is not displaying the formatting correctly but the #ask with a table is
displaying it properly ...

[Bug 51611] VisualEditor: Tool to set/unset text as superscript

--- Comment #1 from Chris McKenna cmcke...@sucs.org ---
A user at en.wp has noted the lack of a tool to set superscript means that the
article Spiral Dynamics cannot be completely edited in VE.

The ability to set superscript and subscript are essential features for writing
about many articles in the science, maths and technology fields, so it should
be a core competence of the VisualEditor rather than a low-priority
enhancement.

[Bug 52321] New: the message diff-multi above comparison of several revisions has wrong directionality

Bug ID: 52321
Summary: the message diff-multi above comparison of several
revisions has wrong directionality
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: WikidataRepo
 Assignee: wikidata-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il
CC: wikidata-b...@lists.wikimedia.org
Blocks: 36637
Classification: Unclassified

To reproduce:

1. Go to
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q12060906diff=56007681oldid=53789438uselang=he

2. Inspect the message above the diff - (7 גרסאות ביניים של 6 משתמשים אינן
מוצגות).

Observed: The CSS property direction is ltr.

Expected: The CSS property direction must be rtl, because it's Hebrew.

I suspect that it happens because the function that adds this message uses
getPageLanguage, while it should use the user language, but I didn't test too
deeply.

This is not VE's fault.

I am not at all certain of this. This problem ONLY occurs in VE. It does not
occur in the source editor, or any other text editor across the whole wide web.

Something in VE is triggering this plugin to insert code. The plugin and the
code it's inserting, is perfectly valid.

[Bug 50540] VisualEditor: Display both edit and edit source links for sections without hover

--- Comment #42 from Skippy le Grand Gourou lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr ---
Glad to see this report already exists.

The idea of having text for VE editing and an icon for standard editing is
*wrong* : you can't have two different methods (namely text and image) for
advertising two options of a single choice, it's an aberration in terms of user
interface (I'm no expert though), it's completely counter-intuitive.
Furthermore people use to associate text *with* image (caption), which makes it
even more counter-intuitive.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd be satisfied if we could just switch the default
editing method. That is, I don't want to use VE as a standard, but an
advertisement saying it may be useful in certain situations, so I'd prefer to
keep it at the hand in case I want to give it a try. However, I want the
default editing action to be the standard editing. That is, I want the first
modify link to open the standard editor, and the link enabled by the hovering
to be the VE. Therefore, a simple default editor = standard/VE in the
preferences would be enough for me.

However I understand the reading issue mentioned in comment 25, so I'd prefer
if the hovering was completely disabled and both links always present (possibly
with the option to hide one or both in the preferences).

Furthermore, I'm strongly for the idea to give the user the choice of his
editor. And when I say user, I also mean new user. Not all users are
WYSIWYGers, and though people seem (and they're probably right) to think that
the standard editor may frighten some new users, hiding the standard editor by
default may as well repel some new users.

Therefore the best solution in my opinion would be to simply disable the
hovering and keeping both links, with the possibility to hide one or both in
the preferences. The argument that it's too many links is absurd : on a
webpage there are links everywhere, internet users are used to ignore them.
It's even more true for WP where almost half of words are links…

[Bug 50540] VisualEditor: Display both edit and edit source links for sections without hover

2013-07-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50540

--- Comment #43 from Skippy le Grand Gourou lecotegougdelafo...@free.fr ---
Two more comments, after reading the discussion pointed by comment 30 :

- this argument from Nick White needs emphasizing : I don't think two small
edit links by section headings constitute clutter. Rather it emphasises *the*
key
thing about wikipedia, that editing is encouraged.

- the cluttering invoked to justify the hovering solution is actually an
argument *against* the hovering : in any case when you hover the link the
second option appears, so at one moment the same text will be visible anyway,
and actually the hovering is adding a level of cluttering, blinking (including
additional blinking when the hovering occurs without the user wanting to edit
the section).

validating url values currently allows for invalid URLs to pass, e.g.:

* http://; is allowed
* http://yadda.yadda/foo bar is allowed

We should check at least that:

* there is no white space in the URL
* for http/https, that the : is followed by // and a non-empty host name.

[Bug 52317] Save dialog half out of screen

Chris McKenna cmcke...@sucs.org changed:

--- Comment #1 from Chris McKenna cmcke...@sucs.org ---
There is a lot of discussion about this at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback#Save_page_box_drops.2C_button_invisible_without_scrolling_..._but_fixes_itself_given_time
including two screenshots: and [[File:VE
misplaced save box.jpg]]

From my testing it seems that if an element is selected (picture, link,
template) when you click save then the dialog aligns itself to the top right of
that element, regardless of whether there is space on screen for it, with
scroll bars if there isn't sufficient vertical space in the window to show the
whole dialog. If you close the dialog, deselect the element then open the save
box again it appears in the same place, only based on what that element is in
the view now. If you close and select a different element then save, it relates
to that element. If you have not selected any elements during your edit it
appears overthe save button.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Edit a page in VE
2. Make a change to the page (doesn't matter what)
3. Click on an element (link, image, template) near the lower left edge of the
window.
4. Click the save button in the top right.

codes to each. It would be better if the mime codes are sorted before they are
assigned the codes, and written to the file. This would be ensure uniformity.

For example, in zimpatch, the output file( obtained from the patch file and
start_file) has different library mime types, since the articles were fed to
zimwriter in a different order.

[Bug 52326] New: VisualEditor: Toolbar overlaps top of page links

Toolbar overlapping page head links Firefox 22/Linux/Monobook

In Firefox 22 on Linux with Monobook skin (not tested in other combinations)
sometimes the VE toolbar overlaps the page head links and tabs (userpage etc).
See the screenshot.

I haven't figured out how to reliably reproduce this but the following sequence
/usually/ seems to work.
1. Make one or more changes to a page in VE
2. click on an element near the left or bottom of the window (to trigger bug
52317)
3. open the save page dialog
4. with the dialog still open, scroll to the very top and very bottom of the
page
5. close the save dialog without saving
6. click a different element and repeat steps 3 to 5.
7. scroll to the top of the screen and observe the position of the toolbar.

If it doesn't work, try again from step 2.
It doesn't always work, but actions like this do seem to trigger it more often
than not. I don't know whether this is dependent on bug 52317 but it was in
testing that bug that I found this one.

[Bug 52325] Be more strict when validating URLs.

--- Comment #1 from Daniel Kinzler daniel.kinz...@wikimedia.de ---
Quick summary of a discussion with Denny:

* definitly more checks for http/https
* maybe have a setting for allowed protocols, separate from the protocols
supported in wikitext.

Implementation idea: create a UrlValidator class that dispatches to a validator
for each known protocol (and optionally to a special default validator for
unknown protocols).

Probably having a separate setting sounds better. If we have both, we would
take the intersection of both, I guess, which would be extremely confusing in
some cases. So we should have them as two different settings.

And I suggest to start with a small list, just http(s) for now, but that's
deployment question :)

[Bug 52292] Changing the commit description creates out-dated patch.

2013-07-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52292

--- Comment #3 from Marcin Cieślak marcin.cies...@gmail.com ---
No, not necessary.

Our last patchset is patch set 5 which is revision bbb123 based on parent
aaa456

One developer submitted patch set 6 (revision ccc789) based on the parent
revision aaa456 as well.

Then another developer edits something which means submitting independent patch
set 7 based on the parent revision aaa456 as well. It can include stuff from
patchset 5 but does not have to.

All patchsets are independent children of the parent. Sometimes parents
differ
when you rebase your stuff.

One can squash (merge) few changes into one - I would checkout patch set 6 and
then checkout patch set 7 by using git cherry-pick -n without using another
commit. You can use git-review -X change, patchnr for that.

[Bug 50402] VisualEditor: Behaviour of default Edit tab should not vary by namespace (action=edit vs. veaction=edit)

2013-07-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #6 from John Broughton johnbrough...@comcast.net ---
Changing CSS id tags doesn't seem like all that much of a programming
challenge, but it would enable all language Wikipedias to deal with this
problem of inconsistent names appearing on edit tabs. So the payoff here, per
hour of programming time, is really large. This isn't in any way a
controversial change (it's invisible, directly, to users); it would be great if
someone would deal with it and we could make progress in reducing user
confusion.

PiRSquared17 is right. This is not VE's fault. It only occurs in VE because of

As a workaround for now we could make VE remove those divs from the HTMLDOM

You mean, have a blacklist of items to just silently remove on save? Could work
as a quick hack.

[Bug 50527] Tagging articles using old markup on VE

2013-07-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50527

--- Comment #17 from kwwilli...@kwwilliams.com ---
(In reply to comment #15)
Chris, could you add a link to that comment. Im interested in why the nowiki
edit filter isnt sufficient.

It isn't sufficient because it disappoints the first human involved, this
hypothetical new editor that is so confused by all of our existing material
that he's errantly typing wikitext into a source window. VE could *help* him,
but instead it pops a warning. The warning obviously isn't working, because we
see saves of this material happening constantly. He goes ahead and saves it
anyway, and he's bewildered and confused: he did just what the little cheat
sheet he got from a friend told him to do, and it didn't work.

It's insufficient because it requires a second human being to then review the
change, figure out what it was that the first human was actually attempting,
and then correct it if he can.

It's insufficient because it's in support of a use-case that doesn't exist:
there's no reason to put something like the Big Apple into
articles. If there *were*, it's coming from an editor that is quite skilled
enough to go into the source editor. If we need to support putting such things
in using the visual editor, a workflow can be designed with a nowiki button
to do it intentionally.

Instead, James Forrester and Erik Moller have decreed that the bug not be
fixed, and that volunteers should eagerly flock to monitoring the output of an
edit filter that detects each and every time this happens to that these
volunteers can fix it. That's repulsive. That's a level of disregard for the
volunteers that work on this project that is breathtaking. It's the *reason*
that the VE team can fix dozens of bugs each hour and the Wikipedia community
still complains that they are non-responsive.

[Bug 52317] VisualEditor: [Regression] Save dialog sometimes attaches to context menu toolbar instead of platform toolbar

--- Comment #4 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com ---
Basically it attaches to whichever toolbar is positioned last. So if you click
on a link, and then open the save dialog, it pops up there. If you then scroll
down (which updates position of platform toolbar), it moves to that one.

--- Comment #1 from Nik Everett neverett+bugzi...@wikimedia.org ---
Surprisingly, this seems like expected behaviour. It looks like it has been in
place since 2010 at least. I'm not really sure I can consider it a bug given
that someone thought it was a good idea at the time. I don't think it is
right, but I don't think it is wrong enough to fix an intentional change.
