Those are viable solutions, though they make sense only if you also submit a
patch for such a configuration against operations/mediawiki-config repo.
Additional configurations are hardly the easiest way; this part could just be
removed, it's been a while since UploadWizard has been introduced on this and
other wikis.

@Niklas, what would you suggest instead for that last one? Would something like
this make sense? Or did you have something else in mind? :/

"You can now use this file on wikis, or link to it on the web."

Re your first issue, I think the easiest way to do this is to just add two new
config options:

* headerMessage, which can be set to a string that replaces "Thanks for using
our new upload tool!" or alternatively set to "default" which uses the standard
i18n translations for "Thanks for using our new upload tool!" (so as to be
backwards-compatible and all).

* showTranslateLink, which determines whether or not the "Help with
translations" link is displayed.

Finally, it looks like the "Select a media file to donate" deal has already
been resolved (changed to "share"/"upload").

Am I missing anything here (or is there anything that needs further
discussion)? Otherwise I'll get to working on a patch for this :)

[Bug 37463] Key performance indicator: Gerrit review queue

2013-11-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37463

Ok, we have some results no. The gerrit backend for Bicho has being improved in
order to get the MERGED and ABANDONED real event dates.

We have added some new vizs to the gerrit panel in korma dashboard:

http://korma.wmflabs.org/browser/scr.html

The last one is the accumulated pending reviews in time.

We need to find why so many reviews were merged in 2013-04. It seems that the
merged date was not correct before this date. So probably, for this kind of
analysis, we have only good data after 2013-04.

In order to get the tables for this data using just SQL:

select new-closed as increment, new, closed, year_new, month_new FROM ( select
count(issue_id) as new, YEAR(changed_on) as year_new, MONTH(changed_on) as
month_new FROM changes WHERE (new_value='new') GROUP BY
YEAR(changed_on),MONTH(changed_on)) t, (select count(issue_id) as closed,
YEAR(changed_on) as year_closed, MONTH(changed_on) as month_closed FROM changes
WHERE (new_value='merged' OR new_value='abandoned') GROUP BY
YEAR(changed_on),MONTH(changed_on)) t1 WHERE year_new = year_closed and
month_new = month_closed;

+---+--++--+---+

Is this the kind of information you are searching for?

The other important analysis is the backlog: the distribution in time of the
pending reviews (when they were opened). We have already done that but not yet
included in korma dashboard for gerrit.

We can build this analysis per repository, company and people!

Next goal is to work in the review time analysis.

[Bug 57702] New: Flow's Edit existing post test fails if post not in view

view
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Quality Assurance
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: sp...@wikimedia.org
CC: cmcma...@wikimedia.org, zfili...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

extensions/Flow/tests/browser/edit_existing.feature times out in some browsers,
e.g.

prints

  timed out after 5 seconds, waiting for {:title=>"Edit post", :tag_name=>"a"}
to become present (Watir::Wait::TimeoutError)
  ./features/step_definitions/edit_existing_steps.rb:4:in `block (2 levels) in
'
  ./features/step_definitions/edit_existing_steps.rb:2:in `/^I click the Edit
post pencil icon$/'
features/edit_existing.feature:17:in `When I click the Edit post pencil icon'

I think this might be because the post it's trying to edit is not fully in
view. Looking at the failed browser test the post it's trying to edit is barely
visible. I found if I run the test myself it passes, but if I resize the
WebDriver window less tall during the test then I can trigger this failure. It
may also be related to the animated fade-in on hover of the pencil icon.

As a temporary workaround I replaced the header text in
http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Flow_QA with an
HTML comment so it's more likely the post will be visible, but I think the test
would be more robust if it somehow scrolled the post into view.

Disclaimer I have no idea how WebDriver and the page object work :)

That's normal. When opening the page normally, you get an old saved (cached)
version, instead of the webservers actually rendering the page at the same time
as you request it.

Attached is the profiling data I tried to get for that page. Which didn't seem
to give much info, on account of a bunch of things appearing to be double
counted?!...

The template ഫലകം:കേരളത്തിലെ_പക്ഷികളുടെ_പട്ടിക_-_ഉള്ളടക്കം seemed to represent
a quarter of the time spent (6.5 s) - which while still a lot, not really that
much. Possibly something to do with parsing image parameter regexes maybe? This
bug seems to be much more likely (although I'm still not sure) to be something
on our end, as opposed to a get the users to convert the templates to lua type

[Bug 57701] New: puppet config of Parsoid localsettings breaks in labs-vagrant

2013-11-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57701

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 57701
Summary: puppet config of Parsoid localsettings breaks in
labs-vagrant
   Product: MediaWiki-Vagrant
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General
  Assignee: o...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: sp...@wikimedia.org
CC: ebernhard...@wikimedia.org, gwi...@wikimedia.org,
o...@wikimedia.org, yuvipa...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Parsoid doesn't work when you add the visualeditor role in Labs-Vagrant setup,
clients get 404 errors. After tweaking parsoid to log the actual error (bug
57694), /var/log/upstart/parsoid.log contains

Stack trace: DoesNotExistError: Page Fetch failure for null : Error: Invalid
URI

"undef/w/api.php?format=json&action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=namespaces%7Cnamespacealiases%7Cmagicwords%7Cfunctionhooks%7Cextensiontags%7Cgeneral%7Cinterwikimap%7Clanguages%7Cprotocols"

Obviously undef/w/api.php is going to give 404.

The bad URL path arises because puppet/manifests/roles.pp sets $server_url to
'undef' if forwarded_port isn't set, and it somehow isn't set in labs-vagrant.
puppet/modules/mediawiki/templates/parsoid.localsettings.js.erb propagates this
to /srv/parsoid/js/api/localsettings.js which contains
  parsoidConfig.setInterwiki( 'localhost', 'undef/w/api.php' )

(Erik Bernhardson figured all this out!)

One fix is to not set $server_url to undef. Patch coming.

Additionally, enwikipedia has spent a lot of effort optimizing their cite
template ( [[template:Citation]] and [[Module:Citation/CS1]] ), perhaps that
work could be copied over/adapted by gl.wikipedia.org

Bawolff has a hard time understanding what most of us are having a hard time
understanding. The piece you're missing, Bawolff, is that after this new
namespace was proposed and passed as simply a new namespace, Steven Walling
took it over by submitting the supposed bug for implementation (bug 57315),
which was actually for something much more than a new namespace.

While I'm sure he originally had the best of intentions, it was pointed out
thereafter that his plan for implementation was markedly different from the
accepted proposal that was supposed to have originated it. Rather than admit
his error as a good Wikipedia administrator should, he's made every effort to
outwardly cling to his original position like a good infallible corporate
manager would: He attempted to pass off the bloat in his proposed
implementation as "requirements" for the namespace, when they had actually been
some new ideas he wanted to tinker with. The claim that these were
"requirements" was again pointed out as erroneous, but he still insisted on
making some list of requirements regardless, rather than simply letting it go.
This is the show of complexity where none is actually necessary that you're
seeing now and have astutely pointed out.

And this is, in my mind, an example of the type of behavior that has brought
the relationship between the WMF and the Wikipedia community to the sour state
it is. And it felt good to get that out.

Hope we can get some actual stuff done now.

The wikitext warning says:

This need to be changed to reference the new ability to switch to the source

Yes, we could wait for Steve to completely squirm out of his original position
with corporate speak in order to preserve his pride, but I think it would be
more time-efficient to simply move ahead now. I'm just saying this for the

I'm okay with delaying some of the questions I brought up for the future, but I
do think the requirements are necessary.

To be fair Ori, namespaces I think you've added are things like Schema. These
were not requested by the community, and we had complete control over what we
thought was minimally necessary. They also didn't have the kind of far-reaching
impact that a Draft namespace on our largest project does. I'm not saying we
need to wait months or something, but I am saying we should make sure the
absolute basics are agreed on and tested.

I added a couple of namespaces in the past and I wasn't held to this standard,
which seems a bit much. (It's fine as a list of desiderata, but not as a list
of merge blockers.) If MZMcBride (as patch submitter) is not persuaded that
waiting is sensible, we should just merge the patch and get on with it. The
risk of having to do extra work to migrate content is dwarfed by the

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

Please describe what "don't work" means, and provide steps to reproduce on
gl.wikipedia.org (I have no idea how to use HotCat and reproduce the problem,
and I assume that "enhanced editing toolbar" is the stuff at the bottom, like
"Formato wiki:"?)

Does "don't work" mean that clicking an item in "Formato wiki:" jumps to the
top? If so, see bug 56718 for how to fix this.

As a first good step when trying to track down problems, could you please open
the Error Console (or whatever it is called in your browser) and reload the
page that you see the problem on? If there is a problem or an error with
JavaScript it should be printed in that console.

In the current prototype on ee-flow.wmflabs.org
- comments are hidden via the "actions" menu (small flag icon).
- topics are hidden via the small angle/arrow symbol.

This is inconsistent. Hiding should work the same for comments and topics.

I propose to
1) add an "action" menu to topics, too, and add hide to that menu.
2) make the angle/arrow symbol on topics work like when cklicking on the header
area (folding/unfolding a topic temporarily, but not hiding it permanently).
This is what most users await when clicking such an arrow symbol anyway. A
permanent action which affects all users is rather confusing at that place.

The buttons in Flow should use intuitive Agora/ mediawiki.ui styles (especially
colors), e.g.:

Create topic / Reply (when answering) / Submit changes (when editing):
-> green button

Preview:
-> blue button

- Cancel:
-> red button

Currently all buttons on ee-flow.wmflabs.org are grey making it very hard to
find the action one wants.
The "Create topic" / "Reply" / "Submit changes" buttons are so pale that they
look as if they were disabled buttons.
The "Cancel" button is not a button at all but only a text link making it
inconsistent with the other buttons.

[Bug 42659] Unable to install SMW 1.8 with PostgreSQL

2013-11-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42659

Both php uni-test errors are caused because the uni-test
PropertyStatisticsTableTest is assigning an out bounds value, 2147483648, to a
postgresql integer data type. Therefore postgresql system is working as it
should, failing the transaction.

http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/datatype-numeric.html.

Indeed in the table: smw_prop_stats, if the data type for the Colum:
usage_count is changed to bigint, then the unit test
PropertyStatisticsTableTest completes with no errors:
"
  php phpunit.php includes/storage/sqlstore/PropertyStatisticsTableTest.php
  PHPUnit 3.6.10 by Sebastian Bergmann.
  Configuration read from
/a/d2/data/asa/mediawiki/mediawiki-1.21.3_testing/tests/phpunit/suite.xml
  ..
  Time: 3 seconds, Memory: 23.75Mb
  OK (46 tests, 314 assertions)
 "

Moreover the statement usage_count=$dbtypes[j] defines as integer data type
in postgresql. Assuming the possibility of big data sets, the a possible
solution would convert usage_count to a bigint data type for postgresql.
Perhaps it would be a reasonable exercise to consider for postgresql that for
an statistical domain, all the integers (-2147483648 to +2147483647) should be
converted to bigints (-9223372036854775808 to 9223372036854775807).

Then $dbtypes array is defined in the function setupTables, line 63 of
includes/storage/SQLStore/SMW_SQLStore3.php.

 $dbtypes = array(
'b' => ( $wgDBtype == 'postgres' ? 'BOOLEAN' : 'TINYINT(1)' ),
't' => SMWSQLHelpers::getStandardDBType( 'title' ),
'l' => SMWSQLHelpers::getStandardDBType( 'blob' ),
'f' => ( $wgDBtype == 'postgres' ? 'DOUBLE PRECISION' : 'DOUBLE' ),
'i' => ( $wgDBtype == 'postgres' ? 'INTEGER' : 'INT(8)' ),
'j' => ( $wgDBtype == 'postgres' || $wgDBtype == 'sqlite' ?
'INTEGER' : 'INT(8) UNSIGNED' ),
'p' => SMWSQLHelpers::getStandardDBType( 'id' ),
'n' => SMWSQLHelpers::getStandardDBType( 'namespace' ),
'w' => SMWSQLHelpers::getStandardDBType( 'iw' )
);

Now it seems that type 'i' should be bigint, which is 8 bytes,
Thus the statement: 'usage_count' => $dbtypes['j'] in line 133 seems that
should be changed to 'usage_count' => $dbtypes['i']; after type
'i' being set to be bigint for postgresql.

We are trying to debug a failure with the way parsoid is set up in the
Labs-Vagrant visualeditor role setup

When the client gets 404 errors, the error in /var/log/upstart/parsoid.log is
just
  ERROR in localhost:Main_Page
Stack trace: DoesNotExistError: Page Fetch failure for null
  worker 25269 died (1), restarting.

but it doesn't say what the error is.
ebernhardson tweaked the second line to actually say what's going wrong by
adding error to the output, so the second line becomes

Stack trace: DoesNotExistError: Page Fetch failure for null : Error: Invalid
URI
"undef/w/api.php?format=json&action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=namespaces%7Cnamespacealiases%7Cmagicwords%7Cfunctionhooks%7Cextensiontags%7Cgeneral%7Cinterwikimap%7Clanguages%7Cprotocols"

, and now we can get somewhere :)

Two-line patch on its way

Take for example the page on France, Q142.

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q142

Wouldn't it be nice if the following link

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q142#P36

would directly point to the statement (or rather group of statements) with
property P36, i.e. capital.

For that, the statement would need to have an anchor ID like P36 - and that
would be all. And external links could point directly to a specific statement.

The app is currently hardcoded to log to stderr assuming that that is captured
in the Apache error log or a similar location. It would be better for
production to allow the log events to be sent to a file on disk where it can be
tailed and sent to a udp2log relay or a similar log aggregation system.

[Bug 57613] Distributed cron replacement

2013-11-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57613

I think that's a sound approach; my own initial brain experiments were mostly
centered about a network of peers (similar to your master-only scenario); but I
agree that separating master vs worker conceptually is the best approach (even
if, in practice, masters will also be workers in small installations).

The problem with non-idempotents jobs being potentially executed more than one
time, I think, is manageable:

1) have a means to mark a job as having side effects so that
2) have a deterministic map for jobs to exactly one (random) worker

such that a job marked as having side effects and absolutely needing exactly
one run can only be scheduled on the mapped node and will simply fail
otherwise. This way, in case of network partition, only the masters that can
still speak to the selected node would even attempt the run.

This trades the risk of the run being executed more than once with the risk
that it isn't executed at all -- but since it's selectable the user can make
the appropriate tradeoff depending on what is best for the specific situation.

I'm not exactly sure about the capabilities of selenium, but would something
like the following be do-able: On the page
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paroxysm_at_Etna,_16-17_November_2013.webm?embedplayer=yes
(or any video with the ?embedplayer=yes url argument. In normal use this url is
embedded in another page, like wmf blog), click on the play button, make sure
video actually starts playing

I suggest you check out the mediawiki.org page and the associated bug 57315.
They both include some explanation, including the technical discussions
involved about implementation, and about future plans.

Bawolff (Brian Wolff) changed:

--- Comment #25 from Bawolff (Brian Wolff) ---
I have a hard time understanding what is going on here? If this was any other
wiki, we would note that their is community consensus, and implement the
change.

The only thing slightly iffy thing here is to be able to let anons create pages
in this namespace - that might require someone taking 10 seconds writing a hook
(Or even better, someone fixing mediawiki so we have proper per-namespace
permissions). However that can easily be done later. the robots thing is
already a config option.

Furthermore, all these various "config" related changes are trivial to change
after the fact if people discover they want something different.

New namespaces get created for other wikis all the time. This has traditionally
been something that has entirely been up to the community to decide for
themselves. I don't understand why enwiki gets treated so differently.

>Key minimum requirements for launch are being hashed out at
>https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Draft_namespace

Kind of seems odd this is being written up on mediawiki.org, for something that
is in essence a config change coming out of enwikipedia community. Its not like
there are non-user facing technical hurtles to surmount. There's no new db
schema being proposed or anything like that.

A good idea, except not everyone is free to take bugs, per earlier discussions
on the mailing list.

At the moment, that text would be tantalisingly misleading. Once the editbugs

The first phase of this will be just the namespace. The launch requirements
are being hashed out at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Draft_namespace . If

Key minimum requirements for launch are being hashed out at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Draft_namespace . Some are pretty definite
already (e.g. NOINDEX), while others are not 100% certain yet. We may also
have omitted some questions, so if you think of any that need to be resolved
before launch, add them.

This would be a new feature with code change for future uses of SecurePoll. At
this point, I do not think it would be appropriate to mess around any further
with the currently running SecurePoll on English Wikipedia.

[Bug 57613] Distributed cron replacement

2013-11-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57613

OK, here's my proposal:

* A cluster of masters, with a maximum of 10 or so, which can double as workers

* One or more masters can manage a cluster of workers. The collection of
masters can use Raft to select which will be the leader and which will be
fallovers.

* Tasks will be specified in an official crontab that will be synced across the
masters. The crontab can be changed on one server, and a CLI tool will trigger
a sync.

* The crontab will specify what task to execute, how often, any restrictions on
which machine the task must be executed, whether the task access external
networks, and whether the task is idempotent and/or atomic.

* The masters use Paxos to claim tasks for execution and to determine the
official crontab specification. The master of a cluster will decide which
workers will execute which tasks.

* Workers will report back to the master when a task finishes or fails. Masters
will report back to the network when a task finishes or fails. How failures are
handled depends on the specification of the task.

* We can use Go (and its Raft implementation) for the daemon, and ZeroMQ as a
means of message sending.

The advantages of this method are: 1) workers and masters can both fail and
somebody will still be able to execute the task, 2) it doesn't require a large
number of nodes since masters can double as workers, which means a really small
cluster can have just masters, and each master treats itself as its worker
cluster, 3) it scales to larger clusters since the hierarchy of masters allows
for better handling of network partitions.

The one problem is if a task that is not idempotent is executed, but then a
network partition occurs and the network cannot determine if the task finished
or not. The task cannot be re-executed because it might cause unwanted side
effects, and the network cannot wait for the issue to resolve itself, since
Paxos assumes messages take arbitrarily long to deliver. Another issue is that
it does not handle byzantine failures, although with any luck that should not
be an issue for this daemon.

Thoughts?
