We do warn people. I have no idea why showing IP addresses would be illegal unless we disallowed it in our privacy policy. > > It maybe didn't matter so much in IPv4 but def in IPv6 since these are no > more dynamic (besides being very long and ugly). People should register accounts if they want privacy. Changing this would be a very fundamental change to how MediaWiki works, as well as how we handle abusive edits. This is the sort of thing that should be proposed on mailing list or in an RFC, not on bugzilla > > Privacy first! Actually the IP could be converted to an anonoymous but > unique string, no? > > I'm not talking about "93.128.5.XXX" but "df76tj6A" or "93.df76tj6A". I'm not sure, but I feel like you would have to be careful with such a system, since the tokens would be very long lived to track abuse (Or would it? I don't know), and (for IPv4) the space of all possible tokens is small. Thus you would have leaking of the "real" address over time, which one wouldn't be able to do much about once the corresponding IP is exposed. Have to make sure there is no way to trick the system into converted an IP address to a token without actually editing, since the IPv4 address space is small enough to be brute forced. I would consider a poorly designed token system worse than just showing IPs, since there is no expectation of IP privacy when its just shown and people can act accordingly, which is much better then telling people its private if it really isn't. Of course that's moot if a good token system could be come up with, which could for all I know entirely be possible. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 62988] Special:WhatLinksHere should canonicalize namespace aliases given in URL
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62988 --- Comment #2 from Scott Martin --- Sure; there's already a {{What links here}} on enwp, which is just a wrapper for [[Special:WhatLinksHere/Page name]]. You can't pass a namespace to it. An upgraded version would instead generate a link to a fully specified URL. As you note, the parameter name would need to be passed through {{urlencode:}} on the template side. Okay, all that said, I've just been informed that there is a hacky way to get a namespace index from its alias, by giving a fake page name to {{NAMESPACENUMBER}} - {{NAMESPACENUMBER:Namespace you're interested in:X}}. And I'm going to use that technique right now. So I guess this request is moot and I don't mind it being WONTFIXED on that basis - although I think it would be cool to have a non-hacky way to use a namespace alias directly. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. In reply to comment 3, I'd suggest that you could turn each of those underscores into " " or "%20" or "__" and come up with thousands more permutations. :-) Given that Squid caching is prefix-based, more aggressive URL canonicalization would have been (or would be) helpful in that context. That is, as I understand it, Squid viewed "/wiki/Wikipedia_talk%3AB" and "/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:B" as distinct URLs and would cache both separately. I'm not sure the same is true of Varnish (which is what Wikimedia wikis now use), though improving Squid behavior alone might make this a valid request. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Can you provide a specific example? Off-hand I'd think that the namespace ID would be better for use in a template (a programmatic context). The namespace name as a URL parameter requires encoding/quoting if there's anything remotely silly in it; for example, the space in "&namespace=Project talk" would need to be changed to a "_" or "%20" or something, while "&namespace=5" is perfectly fine. I don't imagine this request is particularly difficult to implement, but I'm still personally unsure the additional code complexity is warranted. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. As a reminder, we've talked a lot about non-text captchas above, but the text captcha solutions can be still considered: * wikicaptcha with Wikisource OCR (bug 32695) could do as well as reCAPTCHA which according to Burzstein et al. was broken but still 24 times less than Wikimedia's (fancy)captcha; * "just" making a few hundreds language-specific dictionaries and improving the text images generation to be more similar to Google's (as per same Burzstein et al.) would improve fancycaptcha dramatically and solve bug 5309 for Wikimedia at least. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 62985] New: image thumbs broken in Safari
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62985 Bug ID: 62985 Summary: image thumbs broken in Safari Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: master Hardware: All OS: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: Popups Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org Reporter: hartman.w...@gmail.com CC: psax...@wikimedia.org, yuvipa...@gmail.com Web browser: Apple Safari Mobile Platform: --- The images for the thumbs do not work for me in Safari. The reason is the following: TypeError: 'undefined' is not an object (evaluating '$box.removeClass( 'mwe-popups-no-image-tri' ).find( 'image' )[0].setAttribute') The reason is that no was added but a instead. This is because some browsers (IE and safari) basically have a symbolic link from image to img in the HTML context. And that leads us to the 2nd problem, these elements are created using jQuery, but jQuery doesn't support element namespaces explicitly and because the image element will be created in the 'current' document context, it will thus create an HTML img element. What you need instead is something like: document.createElementNS('http://www.w3.org/2000/svg', 'image'); -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 62984] New: Feature Request: different titel from lemma name
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62984 Bug ID: 62984 Summary: Feature Request: different titel from lemma name Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Hardware: All OS: All Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: JavaScript Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org Reporter: man...@gmail.com CC: krinklem...@gmail.com, matma@gmail.com, tpars...@wikimedia.org Web browser: --- Mobile Platform: --- Wikipedia hosts pages in dialects of languages which have no standardized form to write. In e.g. German, all people use the standard German for writing, independent what dialect they actually speak. This causes problems in such Wikipedia communities on about how to name a lemma. Some create lemmas in the dialect which leads to movements if another contributor - often from the specific region the lemma talks about - speaks or writes it in another way. Or someone thinks later that the titel should better be written it in another way, etc. Such a contributor creates a redirect from the old lemma's name to the new one or not. Since there're various ways how to speak and write a dialect, this leads to a confusing crowd of redirects to a lemma by time which becomes very unhandy to manage. Additionally, because it's difficult for readers, but even for native dialect speakers to find out how a lemma could have been named, a redirect in the standard language is necessary for every lemma. Therefore, e.g. the Alemannic Wikipedia (http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Houptsyte) organizes lemmata consequently in standard German and change the titel of a lemma to Alemannic by a template (http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Titel) and Javascript (http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js). This solution prevents all redirects in standard language as well as as movements and thus redirects. The discussion on how to organize this effectively arose currently in the Palatine Wikipedia, too (http://pfl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Schdammdisch#Regle). But the solution of the Alemannic Wikipedia stopped working in the past after MediaWiki had been developed. Mr. Brion VIBBER (http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Byytreeg/Brion_VIBBER) succesfully helped to fix it. The community of a dialect Wikipedia is usually too small to be able to maintain such a solution locally in cases of a change in MediaWiki. The feature request is now to include/adapt the solution of the Alemannic Wikipedia as standard for Wikipedia written in a dialect, i.e. to include the possibility to create lemmata in the standard language and change its titel to the actual dialect's speaking. Thank you for consideration the request. Manuae -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
