TASK DESCRIPTION
  Hi, I have recently been not able to add wikidata links to new articles. I 
tried to check various newly created articles on English Wikipedia, Marathi 
Wikipedia as well as Hindi Wikipedia but the sidebar link seems not visible. 
Already linked article wikidata languages are visible.

  Actually, this is done every week on Tuesday to promote testwiki (ahead of 
the rest from group0). With that, do we actually need additional config groups? 
If we move wikidata to group0, our Tuesday procedure could be:

  - promote group0 (RelEng)

  (I was thinking the same). I don't have a preference other than for it to not 
mix multiple different naming schemes. Grroup 0-4 seems straight forward. Or 
Group A-F. Going with letters has the benefit of being a clean break so that no 
two people say "Group 2" but mean different things. (Hopefully we won't need to 
do this too many more times before automation takes over, but we can always go 
with 10-15, 100-117, A1-5, B2 -7, etc if 
we really need to.)
  
  We have also done per-wiki promotions directly at times in the past. So we if 
we're not sure actually whether this will stick, I suppose one could also try 
it out for a week or two without any change in group names. If not though, then 
yeah, let's pick a consistent naming scheme, any :)

  I hope you don't mind if I contradict my previous comment a bit, since my 
thinking is still evolving on this.
  
  One problem with using lag as the metric is that it doesn't go negative, so 
the integral will not be pulled down while the service is idle. We could 
subtract a target lag, say 1 minute, but that loses some of the supposed 
benefit of including an integral term. A better metric would be updater load, 
i.e. demand/capacity. When the load is more than 100%, the lag increases at a 
rate of 1 second per second, but there's no further information in there as to 
how heavily overloaded it is. When the load is less than 100%, lag decreases 
until it reaches zero. While it's decreasing, the slope tells you something 
about how underloaded it is, but once it hits zero, you lose that information.
  
  Load is average queue size, if you take the currently running batch as being 
part of the queue. WDQS currently does not monitor the queue size. I gather 
(after an hour or so of research, I'm new to all this) that with some effort, 
KafkaPoller could obtain an estimate of the queue size by subtracting the 
current partition offsets from KafkaConsumer.endOffsets() 
.
  
  Failing that, we can make a rough approximation from available data. We can 
get the average utilisation of the importer from the 
rdf-repository-import-time-cnt metric. You can see in Grafana 

 that the derivative of this metric hovers between 0 and 1 when WDQS is not 
lagged, and remains near 1 when WDQS is lagged. The metric I would propose is 
to add replication lag to this utilisation metric, appropriately scaled: 
//utilisation + K_lag * lag - 1// where K_lag is say 1/60s. This is a metric 
which is -1 at idle, 0 when busy with no lag, and 1 with 1 minute of lag. The 
control system would adjust the request rate to keep this metric (and its 
integral) at zero.
  
  > With PID, we need to define three constants K_p, K_i and K_d. If we had 
problem with finding the pool size, this is going to get three times more 
complicated (I didn't find a standard way to determine these coefficients, 
maybe I'm missing something obvious)
  
  One way to simplify it is with K_d=0, i.e. make it a PI controller. Having 
the derivative in there probably doesn't add much. Then it's only two times 
more complicated. Although I added K_lag so I suppose we are still at 3. The 
idea is that it shouldn't matter too much exactly what K_p and K_i are set to 
-- the system should be stable and have low lag with a wide range of parameter 
values. So you just pick some values and see if it works.
  
  > We currently don't have an infrastructure to hold the "maxlag" data over 
time so we can calculate its derivative and integral. Should we use redis? How 
it's going to look like? These are questions, I don't have answers for them. Do 
you have ideas for that?
  
  WDQS lag is currently obtained by having an ApiMaxLagInfo hook handler which 
queries Prometheus, caching the result. Prometheus has a query language which 
can perform derivatives ("rate") and integrals ("sum_over_time") on metrics. So 
it would be the same system as now, just with a different Prometheus query.
  
  > I'm not sure "Retry-After" is a good header for 2xx responses. It's like 
"We accepted your edit but "retry" it after 2 seconds". I looked at RFC 7231 
and it doesn't explicitly say we can't use it in 2xx requests but I haven't 
seen anywhere use it in 2xx responses. We might be able to find another better 
header?
  
  The wording in RFC 7231 suggests to me that it is acceptable to use 
Retry-After in a 2xx response. "Servers send the "Retry-After" header field to 
indicate how long the user agent ought to wait before making a follow-up 
request." That seems pretty close to what we're doing.
  
  In summary, we query Prometheus for //utilisation + lag / 60 - 1//, both the 
most recent value and the sum over some longer time interval. The sum and the 
value are separately scaled, then they are added together, then the result is 
limited to some reasonable range like 0-600s. If it's >0, then we send it as a 
Retry-After header. Then we badger all bots into respecting the header.

  So, Commons needs to be able to create an `ItemHandler` object in order to be 
able to do things with Items.
  An ItemHandler currently needs a `ItemTermStoreWriter`, as `ContentHandler` 
is also what does writes and secondary data updates in `getSecondaryDataUpdates`
  The patch above introduced a check making sure that these writers would only 
be created when the local entity source / local wiki has access to Items for 
writing, hence the exception.
  
  We could do one of the following:
  
  - Keep the check in the same place and instead inject the 
TermStoreWriterFactory into ItemHandler (or pass in a callback rather than an 
instantiated service)
  - Move the check out of TermStoreWriterFactory and into ItemTermStoreWriter? 
(feel ugly and this is what we just moved away from, why should the service be 
concerned with this?)

TASK DESCRIPTION
  After logging into Wikidata, go to 
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:NewItem?uselang=en and from the language 
dropdown, select "ar" for Arabic. The placeholders for the textboxes in the 
form will look like below:

  If this is meant to be a text in English, then its directionality shouldn't 
be changed to right-to-left.
  
  Conversely, if the reason we are showing the local name of the language (ie. 
"العربية") is because we want the user to is about to enter a text in the 
selected language (and, after all, Arabic is an RTL language) then the entire 
placeholder should be replaced with an Arabic phrase that reads well in RTL 
(e.g. "أدخل التعريف بـالعربية" for the Label box, etc.)

  The effect is not the same depending on wikis. I assume they don't have the 
same version of Scribunto deployed.
  
  For example, if I click on the error link shown in pages having script errors 
in Commons, the wikitext of the linked Module opens without line numbers (the 
top navbar above the editable module is not always present, so there's no "<>" 
tool at the start to change the editor mode, as if it was disabled and we were 
editing a wiki page or a talk).
  In this case, testing anything in the console will then show the increment of 
6 lines for lines numbers in error objects (for all lines relative to the code 
typed in the console and submitted to execution, not lines inside functions of 
external loaded modules, which show correct line numbers in these module 
sources)...

  That is strange,  my system behaves differently. After opening a Module file 
originally there are no number lines, but than a different skin (or something ) 
kicks in and I can see code lines. Also if I see an error line number that is 
the correct line number I see in Notepad++ and in the on-wiki editor.

  Looks like it was decided not to use wikidata specific prefixes for MediaInfo 
exports but uses a more specific `sdc` for these (see: T222995 
).
  The code does still look to be hardcoded with wikidata specific prefixes.
  It does not look to me like that we could make this happen quickly.
  I created T253798  to track this 
work. Since it seems that some refactoring will have to happen (initially we 
thought it might just be a config change) I wonder if making the dumps 
available should be blocked by T253798 
 or go ahead and make them available 
with a short notice explaining that prefixes might change in the future with a 
link to that same ticket.
  @CBogen I'll leave that decision to you.

  @ Jarekt: I use the same method also With Notepad++ (it's strange that the 
source editor for modules in the wiki does not even show the line numbers!)
  
  Note that in the text console, the line numbers for errors located in the 
console input is always 6 lines larger than the actual text... That's because 
the console submits our input text by prepadding 6 "sandboxing" lines of code 
(probably ending by a "do "), and certainly appending other lines of code (most 
probably starting by a a newline or space followed by an "end", that we don't 
care about):
  These 6 extra lines should be packed on the same line (replace all newlines 
by spaces in these 6 lines) and prepadded to the input text without any 
intermediate newline (just an ending space separator if needed by the syntax 
used), before being submitted to Lua evaluation. This would help correlate line 
numbers shown in error messages with what we really input in the console.
  
  For now we still need to substract 6 mentally from the displayed error 
objects (This is a small bug of the Scribunto console only, not a bug of Lua 
itself, and not existing for errors thrown inside loaded modules), or we can 
copy-paste the module code into Notepad++, and move the cursor 6 lines above 
the indicated line number. This number 6 has sometimes changed in past versions 
of Scribunto.

  An idea: How about sending back to kafka the update stream and make THAT one 
retention higher?
  Moving retention to 30 days for revision-create will make a lot of data stay 
that wouldn't be necessary (about half of the data), while keeping only the 
updates should be enough.

  Just a note on the current problem:
  the prefixes defined in ttl dumps are identical to the ones used by wikidata 
e.g.:
  
@prefix wdt:  .
  
  This is perfectly valid but might cause some confusions because when using 
commons query service we will likely change these prefixes so that federation 
with wdqs is more obvious.
  I had a look at the code base but haven't found an easy way to override this.
  @Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE do you know if it'd be possible to change the 
prefixes for the local repository such that for commons 
`http://commons.wikimedia.org/prop/direct/` would not be `wdt`?

  The user interface and the API show you the original date value and its 
calendar model, which in this case is the Julian calendar. The RDF export, on 
the other hand, always converts dates to the proleptic Gregorian calendar 
(source 
). I 
assume that’s the cause for this apparent discrepancy (two days sounds roughly 
in the right ballpark for a date some half a century after Caesar’s death).

  @ArielGlenn we plan to make a subtle change to the dump (prefixes), this 
won't be technically a breaking change but could cause some confusion if users 
start to assume the presence of some prefixes. Would it be possible to pause

  Lena, I am happy to help, I just cant commit to do all the work as I am 
stretch quite thin with maintenance of existing modules. There are no 
instructions other than 
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Scribunto/Lua_reference_manual and 
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Wikibase_Client/Lua, so the best way 
is to learn by example. [[Module:Artwork]] has a lot of overlap but it does a 
lot of other stuff (like allow transfer of data from commons to wikidata) which 
can be confusing. [[Module:Information]] or Module:Creator also do similar 
things.
  
  The way I usually work on those is to write everything in Notepad++ and than 
cut and paste to Module page. I create some test page  and use "Preview page 
with this template" to see if current code works or not, without saving

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Wikibase has a lot of services that can have one implementation per entity 
type and use type dispatching services to delegate to the service corresponding 
to the object (an entity or an entity id) that is passed in as an argument. See 
e.g. TypeDispatchingEntityTitleStoreLookup 
.
  
  Many of the services are very similar and repeat the same couple of lines of 
code, but very few of them share code. Only recently 
 some 
of the shared functionality was extracted from services introduced within the 
federated properties hike. This extracted `ServiceByTypeDispatcher` only fit 
the few use cases that it was created for initially, but can likely be extended 
to cover many more cases.
  
  The following is a list of dispatching services (based on their 
EntityTypeDefinitions constants) and whether they can be changed to also use 
the new type dispatcher:

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Generating the initial state of the wdqs streaming update requires parsing 
the TTL dumps (all and lexemes). On the first start the kafka consumer over 
mediawiki.revision-create needs to be positioned to the offsets related to the 
time the dump was started so that it can capture everything that could have 
been created after something was written in the dump.
  
  The way we generate the dump and the time required to make it available in 
HDFS makes it difficult to work within the current 7 days retention period.
  
  As a first test we plan to use jumbo, increasing the retention on this topic 
there up to 30 days would ease our ability to start testing the flink pipeline.

  I looked into if we would be able to just use addSite.php.

  My first reflection on this little extra "wikidata" section on 
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Add_a_wiki#Wikidata is that the 
InterWikiSorting config change is not really related to Wikidata, and if a 
custom order is desired this should be done as part of the main wiki 
configuration...

  The hard-coded value is just the default and can be overridden in the 
constructor; `wikibase/init.js` does that, for example, to use the correct 
endpoint from the config. (That said, some other services seem to create their 
own, independent `Wikibase` instances, without the correct config. Probably a 
bug.)
