John_Cummings added subscribers: Battleofalma, Alicia_Fagerving_WMSE, Fuzheado, Jopparn. John_Cummings added a comment. Hi @Cparle thanks for replying. I know @Fuzheado @Alicia_Fagerving_WMSE @Jopparn @Battleofalma etc will also have thoughts on this. I'll give you my answer and let other expand on it. I'm basing this on 10 years of working as Wikimedian in Residence for cultural institutions, UN agencies and parts of the EU. The main use case is from my perspective is for any content created by external organisations, which runs to 10s of millions of files on Commons. Many of these organisations share quite extensive metadata with their content way beyond depicts, copyright and author. The main benefits I see are the same as for references on Wikipedia, verifiability and credit. **Wikipedia** Allowing users to know that the metadata comes from an organisation creates a level of trust in the information. I think SDC could be widely used and useful on Wikipedia but without references to provide verifiability it seems unlikely it will get used, in the same way Wikidata data without references are blocked on English Wikipedia infoboxes in a lot of situations. Another benefit for Wikipedia specifically is to make creating Wikipedia articles for things depicted on Commons (eg an object in a museum) easier because the references which are collated in SDC can most probably be reused on Wikipedia. **Organisations sharing content:** Many organisations adopt an open license specifically so they can share it on Wikimedia projects, most of my job in the UN the last 5 years has been around helping orgs adopt open licenses. Generally speaking organisations who share content on Commons want recognition and metrics around page views and a clear delineation between their content and Wikimedia community contributions to avoid confusion from readers. Have references in SDC will give the organisations credit for the metadata they share and reduce concerns about their content being confused with community contributions which may be incorrect. It will also encourage them to start using Wikidata and SDC on their own website eg providing multilingual labels. There's an extra barrier to them adopting open licenses with the CC0 license for SDC statements, generally organisations are willing to share under CC BY or SA for content but CC0 is difficult because is doesn't by its nature give them credit for their content. We get around this with Wikidata because we can say 'there will be references so people can see you added this data'. Generally speaking 'please can you spend a significant amount of time to understand and change your license so you can share your content with us, we won't give you credit for any of it' is really not going to work. Hope this helps Thanks again TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T149410 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: John_Cummings Cc: Jopparn, Fuzheado, Alicia_Fagerving_WMSE, Battleofalma, Cparle, John_Cummings, valerio.bozzolan, Esc3300, Jdforrester-WMF, Bene, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Ramsey-WMF, Keegan, Multichill, Magnus, Addshore, matthiasmullie, Aklapper, Ladsgroup, aude, Lydia_Pintscher, thiemowmde, daniel, hoo, Invadibot, maantietaja, FRomeo_WMF, CBogen, Nintendofan885, Akuckartz, Nandana, JKSTNK, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Scott_WUaS, Wikidata-bugs, Ricordisamoa, Mbch331 ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list -- wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe send an email to wikidata-bugs-le...@lists.wikimedia.org

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T282719: Wikidata tool request: Users can enter an ISBN to see if a Wikidata item exists, if not it makes a new one based on the data available (works like 'Cite' tool on W
John_Cummings created this task. John_Cummings added projects: Wikidata, MediaWiki-extensions-OAuth, Wikimedia-Hackathon-2021. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION I would really love a tool that worked a bit like the 'Cite' on Wikipedia, that can tell you if there's already an item for an publication with an ISBN and if not it goes to get the data to make a new one. The process of using it would be something like: 1. User enters an ISBN on a page and it says if there is an item on Wikidata which has this ISBN 2. If there is already an item which uses this ISBN the tool suggests extra statements to add that the user just clicks to add them. The tool gets the data from the same place the Cite tool on Wikipedia does. 3. If there isn't already an item using this ISBN, the tool prefills a form for the new item which the user click to create. It then looks for any item on Wikidata with the same name and author to find other editions and then connects them together using which ever statement is needed. Questions 1. Is this possible/realistic? Would be a really nice thing to have. 2. Would this rely on Citoid being installed on Wikidata or could it get the info from somewhere else? (T199197 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T199197>) 3. I'm sure there could also be an option to enter multiple ISBNs but I don't know what's the best layout for that. Also how could I propose this as a project for the Wikimedia Hackathon? I don't know if there's a category for ideas from non programmers? This means we have different ways in Commons and Wikidata to do the same thing, with no prospect of unifying our approach. This only adds to our list of Wikidata vs Commons woes. Not only are we a "community" with different project norms, we are now separated by differing technical capacities (or at least user interface) even though both Commons and Wikidata are using Wikibase. Thanks for this really clear summary. Question: If they did have the same structure would this mean we could use tools meant for Wikidata on SDC data (and maybe both at the same time) eg tools that use Wikidata data on Wikipedia. A reference does more than a qualifier does, so it's not just a matter of adding a new sub-claim with a property and value when a user selects "add reference". If you check how this works on Wikidata, clicking "add reference" creates a shaded box, within which the user can add any number of claims that are all grouped collectively as that one reference. If you click "add reference" again, you would actually be starting a new shaded box with a different group of claims for the second reference. > > In the mockup, I'm not sure how this works yet. In the bottom left image, I see a place to add a claim—the text box expecting a "Property"—meaning someone has already clicked "Add reference" once, and then I see an "Add reference" button under that. On Wikidata (see below for reference), once you click to start a new reference, the user has both an "+add" button //within// the reference to add new claims to the reference, as well as an "+add reference" button //under// the reference, to start a new reference. I just want to make sure references in SDoC are being designed a collection of grouped claims, rather than as single disconnected claims (as qualifiers). If this is the plan already, and it's just that maybe a new text box pops up once the first one is entered, I would still suggest that some form of shading or visual marker to show which claims constitute the same reference would be helpful. > > F34618098: Screen Shot 2021-08-23 at 2.18.51 PM.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F34618098> > > Also, this is minor, but in Wikidata each claim is displayed with a numerical value showing the number of references (even if it is 0). Will this be done in SDoC as well? Thanks very much for explaining this, is what you would like basically the same way Wikidata does references? If you want to cite a book, you will need a title, an author, a publisher, etc. A web citation needs a URL and an access date. And so on. These claims all belong to one reference, and cannot be mixed together with claims for other references. Once you have two references for a statement, you need to know which title a given author claim belongs with. So there must be grouping. In the data, each reference is its own JSON object with a unique hash, in addition to all of its child claims. Qualifiers, by contrast, are all just standalone claims.
