[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T216601: Allow download of Wikidata query results in GPS-friendly format(s)
Tagishsimon added a comment. @Lydia_Pintscher Is there a method for exporting in the various formats which does not require 4 new libraries that would all have to go through security review at the WMF taking a lot of time and effort to make it happen? WDQS can already export in JSON. It is counterintuitive that exporting in geoJSON, KML &c - seemingly straightforward formats - is so hugely difficult that it should not be attempted. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T334352: Usage in SDC should be shown when deleting items on Wikidata
Tagishsimon added a comment. Might want to widen this out to non-admins, who have fairly legitimate use cases for wanting to known which SDC items point at WD items and, come to mention it, which WP items have dependencies on WD items - such as by the use of templates having WD items as arguments. It's the sort of information to be expected at 'what links here', not reserved for admins. I appreciate the point that admins may wish for an SDC prompt when deleting, but note that elsewhere WMDE are pointing to this ticket as the general purpose 'show SDC use of WD items', not merely the admin deleter's special case. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T296135: Make the Query builder popup less intrusive
Tagishsimon added a comment. Smaller is better. Three short sentences, no graphical distraction. The failure mode for users who just want to use WDQS and not the Query Builder, is that when moving the mouse from the top of the screen down towards a target in the query, accidently triggering the mouseover popup obscures the target to which the mouse was being moved. Making the popup larger - which seems to be being discussed here - exacerbates its problem. Whether or not the obstructive popup has an animated gif or not is, for me, beside the point. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T323239: Badges for sitelinks not getting updated in query service after a move
Tagishsimon added a comment. Let me just point to https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Project_chat&oldid=135426#Why_are_these_items_getting_corrupted_like_this? which covers what might be similar failure mode, and which you may wish to consider whilst contemplating the above. For convenience, here's a cut & paste of the short thread: START I recently used my wikidata model (discussed above) to identify items that are misclassified. The most suspicious items are listed at User:BrokenSegue/PsychiqConflicts. But one really common pattern is the following: - James Lesslie (Q11775583) is linked to en:James Lesslie which is a disambiguation page - en:James Lesslie (publisher) is moved on top of en:James Lesslie and changed to be about a specific person - James Lesslie (Q6138007) is left orphaned to a redirect page. Now I thought that when pages moved the reference gets changed on Wikidata. But this isn't happening? Is there something we can change? Can we ask Wikipedia users to be more careful? There are probably hundreds or thousands of errors like this. BrokenSegue (talk) 01:21, 23 November 2022 (UTC) Probably worth raising at Wikidata:Report a technical problem. The patterns /seems/ to be, pagemove to a hitherto unused name -> WD sitelink is updated; pagemove over an existing page -> WD sitelink is not updated. If so: pagemove over is a routine event; why is it not being recognised / acted on? --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:26, 23 November 2022 (UTC) END TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T323239 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Tagishsimon Cc: dcausse, Tagishsimon, Aklapper, agray, Astuthiodit_1, AWesterinen, karapayneWMDE, Invadibot, MPhamWMF, maantietaja, CBogen, ItamarWMDE, Akuckartz, Nandana, Namenlos314, Lahi, Gq86, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Scott_WUaS, Jonas, Xmlizer, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331 ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list -- wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe send an email to wikidata-bugs-le...@lists.wikimedia.org

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T278962: Allow redirects and the target article as independent sitelinks if redirect badge is used
Tagishsimon added a comment. On the test wiki instance, two issues: 1. The error message when the user tries to add a redirect without a badge, does not mention the cause of the error. Error message needs to be updated Method: Edit, add sitelink to redirect, publish Result: error message saying: Could not save due to an error. 1. The save has failed. 2. The link enwiki:James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault is already used by Item Q9833. You may remove it from Q9833 if it does not belong there or merge the Items if they are about the exact same topic. In this situation, the second point might usefully continue "If the sitelink is to a redirect you must choose a redirect badge" 2. There seems to be an issue removing sitelinks. I observe the following pattern: - add sitelink, publish - edit, delete sitelink, publish - gives "error: Could not remove due to an error. 1 The save has failed. 2 Warning: You are naughty." - cancel - edit, delete sitelink, save - works. This is irrespective of whether the sitelink is to an article or a redirect. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T295275: Dedicated section on Wikidata Item and Property pages for classifying Properties
Tagishsimon added a comment. It's always a huge red flag, when assessing a proposed change, to read a user story which is self-evidently detached from reality. This and other klaxons of doom are found in this proposal. 1. It's at best a polite fiction to suggest there are any users who "would like to quickly see which parts of an Item define the Wikidata ontology". A truer user story is: "as as experienced WD user I'd like other people to stop breaking the ontology". All that flows from a fictitious user story is water from a poisoned well. 2. The key identified problem is that people break parts of ontologies from time to time. In this proposal, there's some sort of [miracle occurs here] process inferred, wherein changing the order & providing a heading, "Classification", for a set of property statements in an item, will make users who are sufficiently incautious as to break ontologies, and who may indeed not know what an ontology is, not break things. 3. "This dedicated section will make it more obvious that some properties modify the ontology." Only in your dreams. 4. PerArthurPSmith, not even The Most Basic analysis of what is an ontological property (e.g. ?item wdt:P1647 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P1647>* wd:P279 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P279>. ) has been made by those proposing this change. Real HeadDesk stuff. 5. Given the problem issue, conspicuously absent from the proposal is any suggestion for evaluating the effect of the change. afaics, we're going to evaluate the outcome based on feels - ("user experience with this change") - rather than, for instance, metrics on changes to the incidence of reverted ontology changes. 6. Come to that, absent from the proposal is any measurement of the incidence of ontology-breaking, or an analysis of the edit count of the breakers. The whole thing is predicated on some sort of faith and belief. 7. Absent from this proposal are any communty member proposers. ("If possible, we should also ping the community members that originally discussed this idea.") For whatever reason - Parkinson's Law, presumably - WMDE has decided this change is a good thing (proposed by WMDE, promoted on Chat by WMDE). So to sum up, the proposel is an ill-analysed, wishful thinking, cargo cult. The main expected outcome is that a bunch of property statements will be promoted in prominence on the item UI, delighting ontologists and, for instance, depressing geographers and biographers who will see their preferred statements sink beneath the fold. New incautious users will continue to bork things (see also: scorpion/frog koan). It does not matter much if you do rearrange the deckchairs as you propose, so to that extent, knock youself out. It's not a good substitute for getting on with other more pressing problems, and it is emblematic of the capricious approach to prioritisation and resource utilisation we are so used to with WMDE. Tagishsimon created this task. Tagishsimon added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION https://query.wikidata.org/ provides a 'how up to date is the data' feature, illustrated in two screengrabs below. The screengrabs are of the same report, run about 30 second apart from each other. One run finds ~7k rows, the other ~4k rows. Both report that data was updated a few seconds ago. One report has presumably hit wdqs1006, which is >3 hours out of date, but which has indeed been updated a few seconds ago. The other report has hit an up-to-date report server. As a user, it is of no interest to me to know that the server "was updated a few seconds ago" if that is masking the fact that the server is stale by hours. Suggest that the 'how up to date is the data' feature should be reporting on lag for the connected server, exactly as grafana does; and that the UI should indicate to the user which report server is connected. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T246731: WDQS date handling produces errors for Julian dates
Tagishsimon created this task. Tagishsimon added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION WDQS holds dates as xsd:dateTime using the proleptic Gregorian calendar. - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/Indexing/RDF_Dump_Format#Time Julian calendar dates entered into Wikidata are stored as such in JSON. They are converted to proleptic Gregorian calendar dates for WDQS However, WDQS stores the original - Julian - calendar as the value for wikibase:timeCalendarModel It follows that a Julian date entered and displayed as expected in Wikidata - such as https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16931292#P571 - 22 June 1498 - is in WDQS represented by the following value set: simplevalue (ps:P571 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P571>) - 1 July 1498 value (psv:P571 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P571>/wikibase:timeValue - 1 July 1498 calendar (psv:P571 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P571>/wikibase:timeCalendarModel) - wd:Q1985786 (proleptic Julian calendar) - see https://w.wiki/JYf By any reasonable definition, this is an error. WDQS is representing the value as 1 July 1498 Julian, when, at best, it should be 1 July 1498 Gregorian, and ideally should be 22 June 1498 Julian. I think this date handling needs a rethink, perhaps along the line of: BDD given: Julian date in wikidata when: WDQS reports on the date then: - ps:Pnnn value should be the Julian date - psv:Pnnn/wikibase:timeValue should be the Julian date - psv:Pnnn/wikibase:timeCalendarModel) should be wd:Q1985786 (proleptic Julian calendar) - psn:Pnnn/wikibase:timeValue should be the Gregorian date - psn:Pnnn/wikibase:timeCalendarModel) should be wd:Q1985727 (proleptic Gregorian calendar) TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T246731 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Tagishsimon Cc: Tagishsimon, Aklapper, darthmon_wmde, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, _jensen, rosalieper, Scott_WUaS, Jonas, Xmlizer, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331 ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T174981: Add pageviews total counts to WDQS
Tagishsimon added a comment. Wikidata currently gets ~660k edits per day. This proposal - if I understand it properly - requires an additional ~5 Million edits per day, or, perhaps 5 Millon edits per hour ("and increment the counters once an hour") ... who knows. And that gives us a couple of nuggets of data per sitelined item. It provides no support for users who want some other time-base of Pageviews. It is ... not ... a happening proposal. Even if there were only a weekly update, that'd still more than double the number of wikidata edits, with all the concomitant lag problems. Perhaps worth noting another route: provision of a facility to make calls from WDQS to the REST API - https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/#/Pageviews%20data - in much the same way as WDQS facilitates (some?) MWAPI calls? This would, ideally, be much more general purpoe and give WDQS users access to the wide array of metadata available there, not least edit dates & editor IDs. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T215073: OSM map layers other than the default should be displayable in the Wikidata Query Service
Tagishsimon added a comment. Can I gently detach this issue, somewhat, from disputed territory. The current situation is that maps served by Wikipedias & (my key use) Wikidata WDQS use "OSM Bright for Mapbox Studio" tiles ( https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Maps_Terms_of_Use#Where_does_the_map_data_come_from? ) OSM themselves offer four main tile styles - normal, cycle map, transport map, and humanitarian. (IMO none of which are as weedy as OSM Bright) AFAIK there are other open source tiling solutions available - cf. https://code.flickr.net/2012/07/11/designing-an-osm-map-style/ A key use case for tiles other than OSM Bright for Mapbox Studio, is use of a WDQS map to sort out P131 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P131> properties for wikidata items (e.g. are they on the right side of a boundary). OSM Bright for Mapbox Studio does not display administrative borders - at least, not internal admin borders - https://twitter.com/Tagishsimon/status/1167898124687310848 - and so maps such as https://w.wiki/7iy produced by WDQS are of limited use. So, per the main proposition: a one-size-fits-all tiling solution is suboptimal. It would be infinitely preferable to be able to extend the provision of tiles and parameterise the tile choice (not least because the single current tile offering is cartographic thin gruel) TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T215073 EMAIL PREFERENCES https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/ To: Tagishsimon Cc: Tagishsimon, Addshore, gerritbot, Pnorman, Yurik, Smalyshev, Lydia_Pintscher, TerraCodes, Mholloway, Liuxinyu970226, Jim_Carter, KCVelaga, Aklapper, Titodutta, Mahir256, Hook696, Daryl-TTMG, RomaAmorRoma, 0010318400, E.S.A-Sheild, darthmon_wmde, joker88john, DannyS712, CucyNoiD, Nandana, NebulousIris, Gaboe420, Versusxo, Majesticalreaper22, Giuliamocci, Adrian1985, Cpaulf30, Lahi, Gq86, Af420, Darkminds3113, Bsandipan, Lordiis, Looniverse, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, Adik2382, Th3d3v1ls, Ramalepe, Liugev6, QZanden, EBjune, Orienteerix, merbst, LawExplorer, Salgo60, WSH1906, Lewizho99, Maathavan, _jensen, rosalieper, JGirault, Jonas, phabyogi, Xmlizer, Susannaanas, lxbarth, jkroll, Planemad, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331, Jay8g ___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Tagishsimon created this task. Tagishsimon added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION WDQS report results, and especially those from embedded queries, would benefit from the ability to provide a title describing the contents of the report. This is especially the case given the availability of the 'Short URL to result', which provides a link to an embed.html version of the report. Consider https://w.wiki/4z$ ... what is it a report of? If you know how to get to the SPARQL and can understand it, you're good. If not then the report, without context, is mostly useless. So, this feature request is for the provision of a Title parameter that can be included with the WDQS SPARQL (e.g. #title= ), allowing a title string to be associated with the SPARQL such that the title is displayed on report output - both when the output is viewed within the WDQS editing screen, and when the output is viewed via an embed.html rendition.
