[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T145522: [feature request] how to clean up redirects in sitelinks

2022-01-02 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

Is this still a valid feature request? The main problem identified in the
description (that some articles are linked to in Wikidata via redirects)
doesn't seem to actually be a problem, as this is explicitly allowed on
Wikidata, and desirable in many situations. If the feature request is just to
remove unintentional links via redirects, that should be clarified in the title
and description.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T235420: Create wikidata badges to indicate when sitelinks point to Wikipedia redirect pages

2021-02-08 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

still seems like a product decision by @Lydia_Pintscher and or
@Samantha_Alipio_WMDE that needs to happen here.

In that case, would you mind asking one of them to respond here or at T54564
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T54564>? They do not seem to be responsive
to Phabricator pings.

  > Looking at
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/602422 this
changes all input of site title to NOT be normalized.
  > This will probably lead to a large number of sitelinks being created as
redirects, rather than just for the cases discussed here and in T54564
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T54564> etc.

  That is correct.

  > Briefly looking at T235420#5932084
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T235420#5932084> it sounds like this could
have a solution that doesn't change all sitelink title input.
  > This comment suggests that the issue is that badges can not be created on
sitelinks that are redirects.
  > Is that functionality alone enough to meet the requirements here?
  > This ticket is after all about "Create wikidata badges to indicate when
sitelinks point to Wikipedia redirect pages", not "do not use canonical pages
names (including following redirects) when sitelinks are created"

Either solution is fine with me, but just ignoring everyone isn't a good
solution. The Wikidata community clearly favors allowing redirects as sitelinks
and has been doing it via a workaround for a long time now. There's no good
reason (that I've heard) to make it so difficult.

2020-12-22 Thread kaldari

kaldari added a comment.

@Addshore - Both Amir and myself have tried to ping @Lydia_Pintscher by
Phabricator and email several times over the last six months to see if she had
any remaining objections to merging https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/602412 and
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/602422. Neither of us have heard back, so I'm
going to assume that silence means consent in this context. Unless you know
something that we don't, it seems like we should move ahead with these patches,
as there is community consensus in favor of this approach. (See RFC
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_comment/Allow_the_creation_of_links_to_redirects_in_Wikidata>
 and Wishlist proposal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2021/Wikidata/Link_Wikipedia_redirects_to_Wikidata_items>.)
As I mentioned above <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T235420#6256772>, it
seems like Lydia's previous objections have been resolved by the redirect badge
and templates like {{Wikidata redirect}}
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Wikidata_redirect>. What do you think?

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T266830: Set up WikibaseMediaInfo's Lua Scribunto interface to work cross-wiki

2020-10-29 Thread kaldari
kaldari created this task.
kaldari added projects: Wikibase-Lua, Structured-Data-Backlog, Structured Data
Engineering.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Here's my use case... On English Wikipedia we need a template to dynamically
add a file page link to an audio file link based on the license of the audio
file (specifically whether or not it requires attribution). Right now, this
isn't possible, so we have to add an explicit "attribution=no" parameter to
every template call for a CC0 audio file. It would be so nice if this could
just work automatically.

Proposed solution: Set up a light version of WikibaseMediaInfo on all the
Wikipedias that just implements the Lua Scribunto interface and provides access
to the structured data on Commons from within Wikipedia Modules.

@eprodromou - We already have an API for retrieving the description, whether

descriptions mean? The editing component seems to be covered in T257944

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T248457: Fully terminate use of Wikidata item descriptions as short article descriptions for English Wikipedia articles

2020-07-09 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

@Iniquity - There are other issues as well. For example, the Wikidata
community's insistence that Wikidata descriptions are primarily for
disambiguation on Wikidata and not intended for other use cases. This is why we
have Wikidata descriptions like:

one of two or more individuals having at least one parent in common. Avoid
using with "relative" (P1038), use "sibling" (P3373) instead

... which are unusable anywhere besides Wikidata. Hopefully, this will one
day be alleviated via T97566 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T97566>,
however.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T235420: Create wikidata badges to indicate when sitelinks point to Wikipedia redirect pages

2020-06-25 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

For context, Wikidata now has over 85,000 sitelinks to redirects on English
Wikipedia alone
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Redirects_connected_to_a_Wikidata_item>.
Of those, at least 27,000 are intentional
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikidata_redirects> (to deal with the
'Bonnie and Clyde problem'). Perhaps it's time that we stop forcing people to
use the workaround and accept that allowing sitelinks to redirects hasn't
broken Wikidata and in fact is a good idea. The main objection that
@Lydia_Pintscher and others raised at the RFC was that "it isn't clear how to
keep the 'good' ones apart from the 'bad' ones", but the badging system (and
existing templates like {{Wikidata redirect}}
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Wikidata_redirect>) provide a solution
to that problem. I support merging @Ladsgroup's patch
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/602422/>
and hope others will consider it with an open mind.

Since the only wikis using `$wgWikibaseAllowLocalShortDesc` are English
Wikipedia and Test Wikipedia, I think we should just repurpose that config
variable rather than creating a new one. To implement this change, we'll
probably need to do some refactoring in
`client/includes/Store/DescriptionLookup.php` and
`client/includes/Api/Description.php` and update all the associated tests
(within the Wikibase extension).

2020-05-07 Thread kaldari
kaldari created this task.
kaldari added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
There seem to be hundreds (thousands?) of cases on different wikis today of
Lua failing to pull Wikidata labels. AFAICT, the Lua module was previously
pulling the labels successfully and nothing about the related Wikidata items
had changed recently (including the labels). This seems to be affecting labels
for both items and properties.

  Some examples:

This error is showing up all over English Wikisource (which I'll try to fix
shortly):

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T69659: TemplateData: TemplateData should have a parameter to support Wikidata

2020-04-30 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

Putnik's problem is common, but should be relatively easy to deal with (per
Mvolz). Where we really run into problems is with the reverse situation: where
Wikidata properties conflate multiple concepts that may be handled distinctly
in Wikipedia infobox parameters. Many Wikidata property are vague or
inconsistently used due to Wikidata's fuzzy, must-fit-all-languages ontology.

Examples of properties that explicitly conflate distinct concepts:

  - `P21`: sex or gender (which is also clumsily used to handle transgender
status, i.e. "transgender male")
  - `P61`: discoverer or inventor
  - `P629`: edition or translation of

Examples of properties that are implicitly vague:

  - `P131`: located in the administrative territorial entity (notice how the
South Pole Telescope <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pole_Telescope> is
located at "South Pole, Antarctic Treaty area" rather than "South Pole,
Antarctica" as it would be if we weren't using Wikidata)
  - `P171`: parent taxon (which can in practice correspond to any taxon level:
genus, tribe, family, etc.)
  - `P527`: has part
  - `P642`: of
  - `P828`: has cause

If we go down this road, we're going to be muddying Wikipedia's more-or-less
clearly defined infobox parameters with awkward, inconsistent data (or data
suggestions) that may not fit a particular language's understanding of a
concept or ontology. `P21` is the most likely to cause obvious problems, but I
feel like it's only the tip of the iceberg, and we need to consider this
carefully before we open up pandora's box.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T229593: Correct Wikidata IDs not available from Javascript of Commons categories

2019-08-01 Thread kaldari
kaldari created this task.
kaldari added projects: JavaScript, Wikidata, Commons, MediaWiki-Categories,
SDC General, MediaWiki-Interwiki.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
In order to work around the fact that you can't create interwiki links to
both Commons categories and gallery pages from a single Wikidata item, people
have started creating category items on Wikidata and linking Commons categories
to them instead of to the main conceptual items. While this has improved the
interwiki links (via some voodoo with the "category's main topic" property), it
has made utilizing Wikidata from gadgets, userscripts, and client-side
MediaWiki code even more difficult.

Now, when I try to utilize the `wgWikibaseItemId` config variable from a
category page, for example Category:Pizzas
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Pizzas>, I get one of the
following results:

  - Nothing, if the item (e.g. Pizza <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q177>) is
linked to the gallery page instead of the category and there is no category
item.
  - A useless item ID for the category item (e.g. Category:Pizzas
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6931672>) which has none of the actual data for
the item (e.g. Pizza <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q177>).
  - The correct Wikidata ID for the corresponding Wikidata item (e.g. Pizza
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q177>).

Thus it's impossible to make any effective use of Wikidata from the
client-side on Category pages (without making multiple round-trip API queries
to Wikidata).

  > Following from the general switch to using the sitelinks for Commons over
the last year...

@Mike_Peel - Could you explain this sentence? What is the "general switch"?

From my POV, this problem is not fixed, it's actually gotten worse. For
example, I can't get access to the Wikidata ID from Javascript within a
Category page if:

  - The category page is interwikilinked from a category item instead of the
regular Wikidata item (which seems to be an increasingly common practice).
  - The Wikidata item is linked to a gallery instead of the category.

Just because you can work around this from within Lua, doesn't solve the
problem for gadgets and userscripts which need the data available from
Javascript (without being delayed by expensive round-trip API queries).

I really don't think Echo Notifications are the right solution to this problem. If you need to message more than 50 people at once, you should probably use a mailing list. There's also the Newsletter extension, which is installed on Mediawiki.org and could be installed on Wikidata as well. If neither of those solutions will work, I think we may need to create some new software specifically to address this use case (that is separate from mention notifications). The fact that {{ping project}} uses hidden content is also problematic. Rather than expanding this hack, maybe we need something different.

Regardless, when we had higher ping thresholds before, we got lots of complaints about misuse. The current 50 person threshold is a compromise that was reached over a long period of trial and error and I don't think significantly changing it is a good idea.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T200350EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: kaldariCc: kaldari, Dispenser, Daniel_Mietchen, Wostr, Liuxinyu970226, Jklamo, PKM, Mahir256, Yair_rand, Quiddity, Yann, Hsarrazin, Aklapper, kostajh, MMiller_WMF, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, RHo, SBisson, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Catrope, Mbch331___

@Jc3s5h: This bug has nothing to do with accurately expressing ranges. This bug is about the fact that "5. century" is not valid English and is confusing to English speakers and should be changed to "5th century" (or if that's too hard, "5 century"). If the word "century" is abandoned, then this bug is moot, but that doesn't mean that this is the right place to talk about accurately representing 100-year ranges.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T95553EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: kaldariCc: Ghouston, Jc3s5h, Larske, VIGNERON, Ayack, matej_suchanek, Hsarrazin, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Sjoerddebruin, Marsupium, PKM, Liuxinyu970226, TheDJ, Lydia_Pintscher, kaldari, Ricordisamoa, daniel, thiemowmde, Lucie, Amire80, Aklapper, Tobi_WMDE_SW, Wikidata-bugs, JulesWinnfield-hu, Conny, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, Soteriaspace, Jayprakash12345, JakeTheDeveloper, QZanden, LawExplorer, Srdjan_m, MuhammadShuaib, LNDDYL, Psychoslave, aude, Gryllida, Shizhao, Arrbee, Mbch331, Jay8g___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T188502: Implement multilingual captions in UploadWizard

2018-04-04 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.
Here are my impressions as a Beta Tester...

Personal background for context: Long-time Commons user and administrator (over 2,000 file uploads and 17,000 edits on Commons), also helped write the UploadWizard (sorry!)

The UI looks good and seems to work great (I tried adding multiple languages and copying them).

I was totally confused though as to what a "caption" was. In Wikipedia, a caption is always a description of an image in the context of an article. Since there is no article context in the Upload Wizard, I had no idea what to actually write as a caption. The instructions offered, "Add a brief caption of the file.", don't help to explain it. Once the uploading process was complete, I didn't see the captions that I wrote anywhere, which was also confusing. After a bit of clicking around, I figured out that the captions were actually used as Wikibase labels. I'm wondering if "caption" is the word we actually want to use here. Maybe "label" or "short description" would be better? Since I'm not sure what the actual intended purpose of these Wikibase labels is, I'm not sure what suggestion would be best.

Another thing that was slightly confusing was the instructions for the description field: "Describe what is notable about the file." I realize this is just a shortened version of the old help text ("Briefly describe everything notable about the work. For a photo, mention the main things that are depicted, the occasion, or the place."), but I feel like the overall gist of the instructions has been lost.

However, I kindly ask you to watch your tone.

Sorry, I legitimately did not intend to express any rudeness. To me, "15. century" is nonsense. I would not guess that it meant "15th century" without context. When I first saw examples of this I thought it was some kind of date parsing bug. I guess the more important issue is that non-German speakers cannot enter century and millenium values into claims as it will only allow you to publish them if you use the German notation.

Neither do we only support 1 language

I meant specifically for the century and millenium notation. Are there other languages that use the dot notation? Sorry for my ignorance. What difference does this make for you, or for anybody else?

The values are nonsense to anyone who doesn't read German.

The concern I do have with utilizing PHPs build-in NumberFormatter (http://php.net/manual/en/class.numberformatter.php) is that it might not be suitable for all languages we need to support.

Understood, but right now, we only support 1 language. 2018-01-09 Thread kaldari
kaldari reopened this task as "Open".kaldari added a comment.
Reopening this. We merged a new config variable (4 years ago) to let us turn off autopatrol logging on Wikidata, but we never actually turned it off, AFAICT. The logging table on wikidata now has over 600 million entries and we can't add new logging functionality (T12331) for fear of making it worse. The decision to move patrolling records from recentchanges to revision may or may not be a good idea, but it's been 3 years since folks signed off on that and we haven't done it yet. There also doesn't seem to be much momentum on making all the other changes to revision that have been proposed (T161671), so I'm guessing this isn't going to happen any time soon. At this point, we need to fish or cut bait rather than letting our tech debt block needed improvements. My suggestion would be to finish what we started and turn off autopatrol logging on wikidata (and possibly commons which is also ballooning). While it's true that one day we may move the patrol flag from recentchanges to revision and may lament that we can't backfill all the records, it's also possible that this won't happen for years (or ever) or that no one will care that all the gazillion patrol records from long ago can't be backfilled into revision (I know I won't). Thoughts?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T49415EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: kaldariCc: kaldari, Ricordisamoa, Wikidata-bugs, Jdforrester-WMF, Abraham, Legoktm, Krinkle, aude, ArielGlenn, MZMcBride, Parent5446, jeremyb, daniel, Unknown Object (MLST), Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Mbch331___

This bug still seems to be present on Wikidata. For example, at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28790416 I see "1. millennium", "6. century", "7. century" (with my language set to English). In English, this format doesn't make any sense and looks like an error. It should say "1st millennium", "6th century", "7th century", etc. As Daniel mentioned, "5 August" is fine in English. We should expect that a naive user will want everything that Wikidata knows.

If that were true, there would be examples of uses that actually checked for "no value", which I've never seen.

To which users are you referring, out of curiosity?

I'm referring to users of English Wikipedia. As you can see from this search result, existing uses of the Property parser function there generally assume that it will return an actual value (and sometimes even assume it is a linkable value).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148357EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: kaldariCc: Izno, hoo, matej_suchanek, Pigsonthewing, Lydia_Pintscher, Aklapper, kaldari, D3r1ck01, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

2016-10-17 Thread kaldari
kaldari created this task.kaldari added a project: MediaWiki-extensions-WikibaseClient.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.Herald added a project: Wikidata.
TASK DESCRIPTIONCurrently there are lots of templates on English Wikipedia that use infobox code similar to:

{{#if:{{#Property:P17}}|...

... or ...

XYZ = {{#Property:P43356}}

... which works great in most circumstances. However, in cases where a property is set to "no value" (as the snak type), calls to the {{#Property}} parser function actually return the string "no value". This causes "no value" to get output to the Infobox. It would be better if it returned nothing (i.e. an empty string or null value) in these cases, so that #if statements could work properly and "no value" is never output to the user. This should probably be the case for "unknown value" claims as well.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T148357EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: kaldariCc: Aklapper, kaldari, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T97566: Add an instruction field for Wikidata items

2015-11-05 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

@Smalyshev: According to the query in
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T103836, the majority of usage instructions
are in English (about 280); French has 35; German has 24, and the numbers
decline from there. Thus even if we only created a non-localizable field for
instructions, it would be adequate for most items (and a big improvement over
the way we are doing it now).

@Lydia_Pintscher: Where would you suggest that we go from here? The community
discussion just went in circles with no movement towards consensus. We now know
how many items have usage instructions (a few hundred), so that's no longer a
blocker. FWIW, I think there are thousands of items that would benefit from
usage instructions, but don't currently have them because there is nowhere to
put them (other than the description field). Also, judging by the previous
community discussions, it seems that the Wikidata community has no interest in
the usefulness of the description field outside of Wikidata itself, thus they
have no incentive to try to find a solution. I think WMDE is going to have to
lead the way here.

> Note btw that "population" is a natural number count but should *not* default

This doesn't make sense to me. A population count is a count, not a
measurement. It doesn't have uncertainty. It will never be converted to other
units. It may be totally wrong, but that's different than measurement
uncertainty/precision. Even if it is an estimate, the estimate is still a
specific number, unless an uncertainty is provided. I would strongly argue that
a population should be considered an "amount" or "number", rather than a
quantity with precision.

2015-10-30 Thread kaldari
kaldari added a comment.

@Yellowcard: I agree with you in most cases. Most numbers in Wikidata should
probably be considered exact values (per
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68580) and should not have any assumed
uncertainty. Numbers for measurements, however, have to have some assumed
uncertainty. I think the problem is that this bug is really conflating several
different bugs:

1. The Quantity datatype should probably be an exact value datatype (i.e.
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68580)
2. There should be a new datatype called Measurement which has units and
assumed uncertainty/precision (the current behavior of Quantity)
3. The assumed uncertainty of Measurements should be half the resolution (+/-
0.5 for whole numbers), not equal to the resolution (+/- 1)

Would you agree with all of those points? What's your opinion @daniel?

For counted values, there is another bug,
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68580, which proposes a new "amount" or
"number" datatype. The bug here is for how to correctly handle values that may
have uncertainty. This should be more clear once
