event, or volunteered behind the scenes, you helped make the Festival

All,
A huge thanks to the Wikimedia South Africa team + the WMF logistics &
travel team + all the volunteers from around the world on the program
committee and assisting in other capacities + all of the enthusiastic
attendees - for making this a wonderful Wikimania.

We got to experience the beautiful city of Cape Town and surrounds, which
was for many attendees our first time in South Africa (or anywhere in
Africa). We met new friends and people in the movement doing amazing work
on the continent & beyond. We talked about editing the projects, about
movement strategy, about next steps. We had a fun dance party... and I know
that I, and many others, are newly inspired to work with the people I met
to improve and strengthen our projects in and about Africa and the African
diaspora.

Thanks again to the organizers (especially to Douglas Scott for hosting us
& running a week-long Wikimania and THEN leading (amazing) walking tours
for two days, to Liam Wyatt for running program logistics and getting
everything organized so that we could have a program, and to Ellie Young &
her WMF team for running things smoothly behind the scenes) -- and to
everyone who participated for making this such a great time. I encourage
everyone, whether you attended or not, to watch some talks, get inspired to
host local events and connect with the Wikimedians who presented their
projects and initiatives, and edit about South Africa!

I too want to give my personal cheers to the organising team and especially
the volunteers. They did a wonderful job, and they should be given a time
to get to the podium and receive their deserved applause. :)

I hope that the next year we Italians will be able to provide an equivalent
result -- it will be difficult, but we'll try very hard. :)

No puedo hacer más que sumarme a las felicitaciones y a los agradecimientos
a nuestros organizadores. Tengo la experiencia de organizar una Wikimanía y
es algo tan complejo en la que tantas cosas pueden salir mal que nunca está
de más agradeder el esfuerzo (¡y los excelentes resultados!) a nuestros
compañeros mexicanos. El café está siempre disponible, la comida es muy
buena (y la comemos sentados en mesas, algo que no ha pasado tantas veces
en el pasado) las charlas son interesantes y la sede es muy cómoda.

Un abrazo grande, amigos, estamos muy orgullosos de ustedes.

Thank you so much to the London Wikimania organizers for putting a
wonderful Wikimania 2014. I want to recognize everyone who helped out: the
core team who proposed the bid and worked for over a year organizing a
vision and a team to carry it out; the staff at Wikimedia UK and WMF who
worked on organization; the international volunteer teams who put together
the program and multiple scholarship programs; the tech staff in-person and
online; the on-the-ground volunteers who made the event go; all the
speakers, and everyone who contributed. Thank you! Pulling off a major
international conference isn't easy, and this one rocked.

This was the tenth Wikimania (!), and we had a small session reflecting on
each of the Wikimanias to date. They have all been different, but they have
certainly all had commonalities too: each Wikimania is a chance to meet
other people who are doing intriguing, wonderful things; to sit up late
into the night brainstorming and arguing about ideas; to learn from each
other about techniques for educating and talking about our projects; to
hack together.

More than anything, Wikimania is a way to recognize that we are part of a
real community of passionate and dedicated people -- people who love to
take pictures and write and code and learn new things and drink and dance
and eat stroopwafels and talk and talk and talk.

So, a huge thank you to the London team for holding a great event both for
long-time Wikimaniacs and for a whole new group of people (this was the
first Wikimania for hundreds of people, going by the opening session).

I encourage you all to watch the videos of the talks, and to keep the
Wikimania spirit alive this year by learning about new initiatives,
reaching out to people you don't already know who are doing cool stuff,
visiting a project that you're not familiar with and seeing what they're up
to, and experimenting with new things.

And I hope to see you all in Mexico next year!

Thank you for all your great contribution to make wikimania 2013 a great
success. As a new comer who knows nothing about the Wikipedia all all those
concerned, the wikimania 2013 has really opened up my mind and enriched my
heart. I started to promote all those I have heard through my global
networks of International Toastmasters, Nourish the Children and Nu Skin
Enterprises. Hope that we still join hand in hand to make the wikimania
2014 a greater success.

the energy the HK team put into making this such a wonderful event. So
thank you all, you rock!

A special thanks to Kris and Jerry for giving us the chance to experiment
with  the beta version of the Chapters Village and for supporting us
throughout the whole process.

Another thank you! goes out to all the participating chapters and
interested visitors of the village.

Hope you have all successfully fought the post Wikimania depression.

This was my first Wikimenia (and my first time in Asia!).
Wikimania realized me that the World exist :-) with its diversity but with
its common interests and aims too.

involved. I would like to thank for their concern about safety, effort and
hard work.

The event management was great.  We didn't have to worry about anything at
all and things were much better than I had ever thought it would be. In
overall Wikimania 2011 was a great success!.

At the airport everyone knew about Wikimania and even in the passport
control, during security checking the staffs knew that we were from
Wikimania by just looking at our T-shirts and badges inside our luggage and
gave us special preferences, took off from long queues and put at the front
row, had less trouble getting in and out just because I had the Wikimania
badges, tags and the T-shirt. :)

 all in a few hours. Special thanks in this category to Danny B, who
 gave me the impression he had made it his personal mission to look
 after me, getting me water when I was presenting and polaroid pictures
 at the party, even though I'm sure he was plenty busy with other
 things.

 I wish the WM11 team lots of recovery sleep after what I'm sure has
 been an exhausting week, and the WM12 team the best of luck trying to
 live up to this excellent example.

 You the team rocks. Not only the conference in general I mean here -
 you guys could have ignored some petty minor requests and inquires
 just saying it's out of our business we're busy. Sometimes I even
 felt guilty to see your team's quick responses to the list and
 elsewhere.
I experienced the same thing: after asserting on identi.ca and Twitter
that WM11 would have streaming, I got 3 or 4 replies from different
organizers correcting me and apologizing for the lack of streaming,
all in a few hours. Special thanks in this category to Danny B, who
gave me the impression he had made it his personal mission to look
after me, getting me water when I was presenting and polaroid pictures
at the party, even though I'm sure he was plenty busy with other
things.

I wish the WM11 team lots of recovery sleep after what I'm sure has
been an exhausting week, and the WM12 team the best of luck trying to
live up to this excellent example.

I am so grateful to WM Israel.  I'm grateful for the long conversations 
I had with Wikimedians from Israel and from all over the world, for the 
Developers' Days, for fine parties and long coffee breaks, for 
convenient shuttlebuses and comprehensive instructions, and for an 
infusion of friendly, can-do spirit.

This was my first Wikimania, and as far as I can tell, this is what

It was hard work, protracted work, not seldom very frustrating work.
I am very happy that the event was such a satisfying success and it
was a salvation to see how happy the people were during the Wikimania
despite the problems we had (you can have a view on
http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Monsters_and_critics for
details).
We can really be proud about this what we created, but to organize a
event with this complexity under the permises we had brought some of
us to the border of bearableness and is under the same prerequisites
not recommendable.

99% of the problems came from lack of communication.
The work on this organization showed how important it is to work
together as a closed team, share informations with each others, be
transparent, be trustful, work disciplined, bank on collective decided
agreements, care about the others health - in social, physical and
mental regards!

Volunteers are no slaves and no idiots who say still thank you after
you kick them into ass and you can throw them away like trash after
usage respectivly blight. The whole Wikip/media world lives from the
engagement of people who want to share there passions and engagement
together. We should learn from this event, how important it is to give
still more respect for people who work hard with no or low fee to
support free knowledge on the whole world.

I've said it many times, but 90% of it is just getting a few hundred
Wikimedians together in the same building.  9% of it is making sure
they have power and Internet access.  The rest is icing—but it's the
icing that we agonize over for weeks.

tell at the time whether it's going well, so having someone say so
means a lot.

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication -- it was a terrific
experience, and I'm glad that most things came together in spite of
the various difficulties in the process. It was great to have a
concert and a movie premiere at a Wikimania, the program was intense

attendees!

needed. Several people who live outside Poland suddenly lived for a few
weeks in an appartment in Gdansk together - leaving their lives for what
they were - and had to make horrible long hours to make the conference to
what it has become. I have deep appreciation for those people and I think it
is quite unique and wonderful to have such a volunteer base to fall back
onto.
But also the people we did not see did a tremendous amount of work in the
past weeks. I remember that I slipped a few days before the conference that
it would be nice to have X in the attendee packages, and the next day they
were suddenly arranged!

- I have only seen so much of it. I do hope to have the opportunity of
seeing many of you irl again soon!

I also had a delightful time in Gdansk, and found this one of the most
engaging Wikimanias ever; thanks to the local team for their hard work
in pulling this off!

And thanks to everyone in back rooms who spent their days making
Wikimania amazing. Some were long-time organizers and Wikimaniacs;
some were local enthusiasts, new to Wikimania; and some were venue and
city staff who really made an extra effort to be available at all
hours.   ( Łukasz - perhaps you can make a page online recognizing the
work of the local volunteers that chipped in over the last week. )

I managed to have my copy of the program.

 I spent 6 wonderful days in Gdansk, which is a lovely city. I met plenty
 of great people. The program was interesting. The concert was SO cool.
 There was food and there was a bed. I could always find an electrical
 plug (not always the case in previous Wikimanias) and whilst not great,
 the Internet was usually working. I read several time that the streaming
 was great. Rumors from other participants tell me that most people were
 happy as well. So, thank you thank you thank you to all the organizers !

I haven't brought my laptop so I haven't tested the WiFi, but people I
know never mentioned problems about it.
For the rest, I completely agree with Florence and if I can add the
food was really good (I would have said perfect if there would have
also been choice for vegetarians et al.).

After having been a member of the past 5 Wikimanias, I have to outline 
how nicely organized everything was. Indeed, the bar is raised very very 
high now for the future events.
Great program, great people, great food, great parties. Even 
unexpectedly warm winter weather. Patricio, you were worried the first 
day about the two event location... that was no trouble whatsoever. 
Thank you as well for the videos and live streaming, and for the 
translation service.

Egypt, I still believe that choosing to have Wikimania 2008 in 
Alexandria was a good one.

I should add too that despite the security concerns expressed by some 
before the conference, I never felt unsafe in Egypt.  Some of the habits 
were extremely annoying, but none of this ever suggested any malicious 
intent.
 Here were some of my favorite parts of this year's conference:
 ...
 * being in Egypt itself (despite being hot and sick): things like
 getting in a taxi then waiting for the driver to fix his engine before
 we could go; sitting out on the corniche in the evening along with
 everyone else; finally realizing how small the Sphinx actually is
 compared to the pyramids
In Luxor I was riding in a horse-drawn carriage when the horse fell over 
trying to make a turn.  Horseshoes are really not suited to smooth 
pavement.  The carriage had to be removed so that the horse could get up 
again.  Fortunately, he did not appear to be injured.  Life in the 
modern west does not prepare us for this kind of incident.

Somehow, the sickness and other discomforts we have faced add a special 
texture to the happier moments.
