Re: [Wikimedia-l] Google Summer of Code 2018: Call for projects and mentors

2018-02-21 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hello all,

We are approaching towards the beginning of the student application period
in two weeks time. If you have a project in mind that you would have the
time and interest to mentor, please create a task on Wikimedia Phabricator
and add a Google-Summer-of-Code-2018
 tag to it in the
next few days or so.

Check out the existing ideas for projects and program timeline here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2018.

More information for mentors:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Mentors.

Let me know if you've questions!

Cheers,
Srishti

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Fake news ‘vaccine’: online game may ‘inoculate’ by simulating propaganda tactics

2018-02-21 Thread James Salsman
Here is a good example of instructional software to solve a systemic
communication issue:

https://www.getbadnews.com/

Ref.: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/02/180220093555.htm

How can we sustain progress towards resolution of the issues?

Also, does the date by which Titan is likely to be colonized correlate
with the extent to which progress has been achieved? This is not the
first time I have asked this question here, and I hope the answer is
as clear to everyone else as it is to me: it correlates inversely.

I wonder if the Foundation could afford to have David Attenborough
narrate the interaction between Cambridge Analytica and Cambridge
University. They would if they'd start investing in unskimmable
endowment funds. Make donors' money work hard, with a screening for
sustainability.

Bring back the regular email to donors suggesting other organizations
worthy of their money, and tell them how to avoid being skimmed by
high frequency traders, too, please.

Best regards,
Jim

Re: [Wikimedia-l] What's making you happy this week? (Week of 18 February 2018)

2018-02-21 Thread James Salsman
I am happy about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpmRWCE7F_I=30m30s

Aaron Halfaker describes optimized ways to refine backlog presentation.

But I am unhappy that his first slides are missing and I hope he will
post the whole deck.

Also I would love to see the Turkish Wikipedia in InterPlanetary File
System, or at least its dumps.

2018-02-21 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Nina Simon wrote a blog post [1] that I think has a lot of merit for what
we could do to gain relevance. Nina is big in the GLAM world and the museum
she works for has an approach that will have a big effect when we consider
it carefully and implement it in the best way we can.
Thanks,

I am sad to know this news about User:Bhadani's demise.

I knew him as a very wise person with an open mind.

That he chose to write his autobiography as a Wikipedian shows how much he
valued the movement.

My heartfelt condolences to his family.

[Wikimedia-l] wikiclass

2018-02-21 Thread Masoud Abdoli
It is about an online video chat platform or social media that allows
people to make their own profile and they can make a video chat with anyone
else for educational purpose. First, people have to make a profile about
their abilities and upload their resume and choosing a price for a chat
with other people and other users can do the payments with a payment
service and start a video chat. It can be one-way or two-way and private or
public video chat and it’s suitable for freelancers. It may also have a
10-minute trial mode for the beginner or a preview for advanced users.

People can rate themselves, they can run classes on this platform and
somehow if they want to provide vital counseling like medical counseling
they have to approve first. In fact, there is two kind of users, first,
people who present materials, second, people who pay for these educational
materials.

One of the problems of searching on the internet to find an answer to your
question is sometimes it takes a lot of time to find the answer. I think
this online video chat might be the answer. it will design into several
categories how people easily access to right ones.
