[Wikimedia-l] Announcing a 3rd funding round for Conference Fund in 2022

2022-05-14 Thread Chen Almog
Hello everyone,

*TL;DR*: Given the community need for in-person events, we are opening a
3rd funding round for Conference funds for events taking place in September
- December 2022. This condensed round will be for events already in
planning. Proposal deadline is June 13, but you are encouraged to submit
your proposal earlier if possible.

Recently we announced the removal of the Covid travel restrictions
,
and we are now welcoming proposals to support travel again. Since the
announcement, we have heard many communities expressing the urgency and
desire to convene and resume plans of hosting in-person global events.

We wish to respond to that need, and therefore, we have decided to open a
3rd funding round for Conference Fund 2022, to allow communities who have
already started planning their events for the last quarter of 2022, an
opportunity to submit a proposal.

*This will be an expedited round, *meaning - shorter turnaround time, *for
events already in planning* for late 2022.
This condensed round is designed to support events in September - December,
so we have to be able to finalize decisions by June.

We know what it takes to organize and host a global event. It requires a
lot of capacity, time, volunteers, and planning resources. If you haven’t
started organizing your conference, or if you have the option to delay it
until the next round in September - we highly encourage you to take the
time you need to properly plan.

*Who should consider applying to the 3rd round?*

   - If you already have event planning underway for September - December
2022, with a clear vision, capacity to organize and a proven community
   interest.
   - If you started planning this event 2 years ago and had to pause due to
the pandemic, and now can undertake the effort quickly.
   - If you started planning a small scale event, limited by the previous
restrictions, and now wish to adjust your existing plans to include
international travel that can be coordinated easily, and require more
   funding.

This new round *will not replace* round 1 for 2022-2023 (proposal deadline
is September 5 ). So if
you are thinking of hosting an event in early 2023 - you should wait for
the September round.

*The 3rd round timeline:*
June 13, 2022 - proposal deadline
June 14 - June 28, 2022 - Staff eligibility review and feedback
June 29 - July 6, 2022 - Revision
July 6 - July 12, 2022 - Finalizing + Announcements

You are welcome to submit your proposal before June 13. The sooner you
submit and inform us, higher the chances we can process your application
faster.

If you have any questions, or want to consult, please reach out to us on
conferencegra...@wikimedia.org

On behalf of the Conference & Events fund program,

Chen

[Wikimedia-l] The May Round Of 1Lib1Ref Starts Tomorrow 15 May 2022

2022-05-14 Thread Felix Nartey
Hello fellow Wikimedians, librarians, bibliophiles, and information
enthusiasts,

The May round of the 2022 1Lib1Ref starts just
tomorrow 15 May 2022 and will run until 5th June 2022. Are you going to be
joining us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia's content for the
billions of readers who rely on Wikipedia as a source of information?

In the past year or so we have been piloting different modes of
participation in the campaign. In May 2021 we encouraged adding sources on
Wikidata, in January 2022 we improved on that, added opportunities to
create Wikidata items related to works on Wikisource, and added 9 new
languages from the CEE on citation hunt
. We are
encouraging the addition
of references to decrease gender bias on Wikipedia

and 12 new languages from Africa, and Asia in the upcoming May round.

If you are already familiar with the campaign or editing on Wikipedia and
would like to experiment a bit, we invite you to try our new contribution
methods for advanced contributors

in the May 2022 round.

If you are an organizer, remember to add your local event(s) to the campaign
dashboard
,
so we can learn and track activities happening across the world. Read more
about the campaign at the blog post on Diff

.
Join us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia articles one source at a
time!

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Hackathon May 20-22: Info about helper roles and how to create interactive sessions

2022-05-14 Thread Melinda Seckington
Hi all,

The Wikimedia Hackathon
 is 1 week away,
on May 20-22. As promised, a few more updates:

We are looking for people to help us run an awesome and smooth event! If
you’re interested in helping with facilitating a room or newcomer support,
you can add your name to the Helper Roles page

.

There’s still time to add a session or social activity. You can pick an
open slot in the category which fits your topic and add the session
directly to the schedule
.

Want to learn how to make your session interactive? Read this guide

on how to create fun, interactive sessions! We previously shared details on how
to propose a session

and how to prepare for a session

.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

Melinda, for the hackathon committee

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Building Partnerships and Identifying and Addressing Harassment Online self-guided courses now available on WikiLearn platform

2022-05-14 Thread Samuel Klein
Cassie + Asaf -- again, very cool, I'd like to share this more widely, but
it's still a bit too confusing.
- Courses includes some test courses that
should probably be hidden, many copies of each course, and no details for
the Harassment course.
- It's not clear if there is a permanent page to point to for each course
separate from the instances of that course (w/ a given start date).

Mike,

I'm not sure why you chose this frame for your response (open edx is great,
we need better options for courseware, these existing courses should be
more accessible and resuable. *And* it should be integrated into WV, which
is open to courses about the wikis. :) ... but I understand the sentiment!

WV is an editable, open space for people to create, collaborate + comment
on, fork, and translate courses (or just lists of resources for learners).
It's permanently versioned, multilingual, crosslinked, transcludable,
*gradual*. It has the pros and cons of default mediawiki, and [unlike,
say, wikisource] hasn't been updated or customized since the rise of online
courseware platforms; nor have those platforms tried to become very wiki.
A missed opportunity on both sides.

People in the movement who are developing and updating their own courses
should certainly be invited to add them in some way to WV. (here's a
category for you.) If
we're inviting people to add to learn.wiki, let's please make that an easy
option in the workflow. And eventually, once the platform is open to
community course-creation, of course some integration in the other
direction would be nice to capture the work of people currently teaching
courses on the wiki (limited by topical scope if that's the intent, or
perhaps there can be self-referential courses about using the wikis and
other wikis on the same instance)

2022-05-14 Thread Geert Van Pamel
Mike,

The new course platform is really "intended to serve the entire Wikimedia
movement!" - opposite to what you believe; you have access
via your Wikimedia account. The platform is a real MOOC platform, unlike other
MediaWiki powered sites.
