Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising reports after 2011

Thanks for the timely question! We are actually just double checking the
numbers in our FY 2013-14 Fundraising Report right now. We are aiming to
publish it toward the end of the week.

Thanks. This didn't answer any of the 2012 questions though.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Vandalism on photographs of living people

2014-10-20 Thread
Based on discussion with 99of9 at
the report has been changed to include editors with up to 1000 edits
on Commons and 2000 edits on Wikipedia. The images list has jumped to
20 from 6, still a small and manageable list for new image patrollers.
A previous minor change was to how often the report runs - checks are
made every 5 minutes now, previously it was every 15.

If you would like to see other improvements, please raise suggestions
on the above talk page and I would be happy to discuss what would be
sensible to include or adapt.

This page shows images actively used on English Wikipedia biography
articles, where a new upload has overwritten the original by a
newbie* account. The report should be automatically refreshed within
15 minutes of a new image upload/overwrite of this type.

Instances of deliberate image vandalism of this type are rare, but
important to handle promptly. If you have suggestions for improvement
of this report, I would be happy to do my best to accommodate them.

 * For convenience newbie accounts have been arbitrarily taken as
accounts with fewer than 200 edits on the English Wikipedia or fewer
than 100 edits on Wikimedia Commons.
 * The report is maintained by Faebot and should be considered in a
draft state as it may be moved to a more 'official' location or be
taken on by more skilled bot operators.

Terrible news. I had the pleasure of knowing him, and had a few
interesting conversations with him over the years.
Like the best, he was modest, tireless, and collegial.
My condolences to the family and all his friends in the community.

It is with great sorrow that Wikimedia Italia announces the death of
Alessio Guidetti, better known on the projects as Cotton. He has been
treasurer of the organization for about five years, from 2009 until last
Alessio started to contribute to Wikipedia at the end of 2006: after a
months he became already a sysop. He was a tireless translator of
articles in the most diverse fields, and also part of the small group of
the patrollers -and, indeed, he continued his precious work until the
even if invisible for most of the editors.
From the moment he joined Wikimedia Italia, Alessio was very keen to
contribute effectively, guided by his well-known pragmatism. He run for
Board: as soon as he was elected, he took the role of treasurer, a
difficult task and a fundamental one for us but little recognized. It
Alessio who took care of the most delicate and complicated tasks, and he
did so in the years during which Wikimedia Italia was starting to grow
the years of our quantum leap.
This spring he decided to not run again for the Board, but he kept
collaborating with his successor for an effective -and not only formal-
handover. He took care of the accounting, donations and employees'
paychecks till his very last days. He has been an incredible help:
trustworthy, precious, always ready for a joke.
Alessio has been a pillar of Wikimedia Italia: his pragmatism, his
hardworking disposition, his sense of humor were, and are, a part of our
organization. A part of how it was born and how it is growing. A part of
  what we are.
Wikimedia Italia is close to the family and the friends of Alessio in
  grievous moment.
  We will terribly miss him.
Many of you have know Alessio in Wikimanias and conferences.
If you wish, you can leave a last goodbye here on his userpage:

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing Learning Quarterly, the newsletter from Learning and Evaluation team

2014-10-20 Thread Maria Cruz
Hi all,

A few months ago, the Learning and Evaluation team started a new
communication outlet to reach out to the Wikimedia community: Learning
Quarterly, a newsletter that has recently launched its second issue.

Find it on Meta at:

Through this means we seek to share the learning about programs and
practices taking place in the movement, including information around new
learning resources, blog posts written by the team, learning patterns, and
recent initiatives in IdeaLab that need community support.

Learning is a key aspect of community and program development[1], and we
strive to socialize this knowledge to the community at large. Help us by
spreading the word! [2]

If you want to find out what were the hot topics from the past quarter,
read further on metrics, or learn what other community members are doing in
different parts of the world, subscribe to the Global Message delivery list
[3] and have it sent to your wiki of preference. You can also read the
latest issue on the Evaluation portal on Meta [4] or subscribe to our
bi-weekly announcements *[5]*.

If you are coordinating a Wikimedia program or project, and would like to
be featured in the newsletter, please leave a comment on the Second issue
Discussion page or email

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015

2014-10-20 Thread Asaf Bartov
It seems this is uncontroversial, so Ad's super-bold edit can be taken to
finalize the venue. Thanks again, WMCH! :)

I have boldly taken another step forward, and drafted a description for the
program team's work, here:

Neither I nor WMF are trying to exert undue control over this process;
rather, I am moving this forward in good faith and relying on other people
to be equally bold in editing (or reverting!) anything I've stated there.

Looking forward to making this the most productive WMCON[1] ever! :)

In the interest of moving on to focus on more substantive issues, and in

[1] or whatever we may choose to rename it. The previous thread was

keep this one on track, and discuss the name ELSEWHERE[2], shall we?
