Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikitribune!

2017-04-27 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Please remember what Wiki stands for; it is "quick". It is not Wikipedia.
It would be problematic when Wikitribune was called "WikipediaTribune".
Thanks,

First I should say (putting aside the name, marketing, and potential COI
issues for a moment):

I welcome more independent journalism and fact-checking. In a world of
media consolidation (that means the same people controlling more and
more of the media), more voices is a good thing.

The new project will use a wiki-style setup and experiment with
bringing together professional journalists and community contributors to
produce fact-checked, global news stories.

This (and particularly the name "Wikitribune") is one of my main concerns.

What defines a wiki is that you edit from the browser, and edits go live
immediately. (There are limited exceptions like FlaggedRevisions, but a
site with 100% FlaggedRevisions is not a wiki, especially if approvals
are not by the community).

The BBC says, "However, while anybody can make changes to a page, they
will only go live if a staff member or trusted community volunteer
approves them."

If this is correct, it is not a wiki, and "wiki-style" is very debatable.

Calling something a wiki when it is not will lead to major brand
confusion with Wikipedia, particularly given your involvement.

Please clarify the model of the site, so we can assess this further.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] General Counsel: Welcome Eileen Hershenov

2017-04-27 Thread Mz7
Indeed, it must be challenging to serve as general counsel for an organization
as diverse as the Wikimedia Foundation. As far as I understand, the majority of
the legal team's work is done “behind-the-scenes”. They make it their full-time
job to respond to complicated and serious issues and defending the movement in
an area that not many community members are able to fully observe. In this
sense, I can imagine it to be quite thankless at times, one that requires a
dedicated, passionate, and committed person to perform.

Thank you, Michelle Paulson, for being that person. Thank you so much for your
service to the Wikimedia Foundation and to the Wikimedia community, and best of
luck for the future.

And a warm welcome, Eileen Hershenov. Thank you for offering to serve in this
role. We’re excited to work with you.

[Wikimedia-l] General Counsel: Welcome Eileen Hershenov

2017-04-27 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear Michelle,

As many many other Wikimedians, I am truly grateful for the, in the very
sense of the word, service you have done to the Wikimedia movement over the
past years both as a legal professional and as a community member. I am
saddened to see you go. Together with the rest of the legal team, you
admirably worked day and night to keep Wikimedians and the Wikimedia
projects safe, and were extremely successful in doing so.

Most of all, there has always been a great feeling of mutual trust and deep
understanding of community values that I know you hold highly. We will miss
you and I hope that you will continue to be a part of this movement. Let me
thank you again for these last nine years. All the best for your future
endeavors, Michelle!

Dear Eileen,

Welcome to the Wikimedia movement! You are joining an amazing team that is
part of an energetic organization at an exciting point in its short
history. Wikimedians all over the world are looking forward to working with
you and I am sure you will soon experience the first examples of the
amazing feats this community is capable of.

"Be bold!" – One of the core rules of Wikipedia is not a phrase you would
normally use to welcome a new general counsel, but I know it is just right
for the general counsel of the Wikimedia Foundation. I am sure that you
will soon learn more about what this phrase means to us.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] "News Integrity Initiative" at CUNY

2017-04-27 Thread Rogol Domedonfors
Will the Foundation be seeking to join in the initiative and possibly
secure some funding to support and enhance the Wikinews projects? It seems
that some of the supporters of this project are already donors to the
Foundation, so there is a pre-existing relationship.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to WMF April 2017 Metrics & Activities Meeting: Thursday, April 27, 18:00 UTC

2017-04-27 Thread Lena Traer
REMINDER: This meeting starts in 30 minutes.

*Update/change to Movement update:* As noted in the March meeting invite,
we are changing the movement update section of the metrics meeting. For the
April meeting, we will be having a lightning talk-inspired movement update
where Wikimedia community member(s) will share a brief summary of a recent
community project, story, or other activity. More details about other
community stories, projects, and initiatives in the movement will be
available in the appendix of the metrics meeting deck.
