2021-05-17 Thread Željko Blaće
What is May 17th?

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was
created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination
experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all
other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or
expressions, and sex characteristics. The date of May 17th was specifically
chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to
declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. https://may17.org

One year ago in 2020 we started QueeringW in hope #1 Queering Wikipedia
conference would be happening with a year of delay...now we hope it is in
2022!

Meanwhile we are "Together, we Resist, Support, and Heal"

[Wikimedia-l] Movement funding questions

2021-05-17 Thread Samuel Klein
Dear list,

Risker posed an excellent question in the AffCom thread about *review and
development of movement funding*, which could use its own dedicated
thread. Riffing on the theme, here are a dozen questions for anyone who
knows part of the answer -- particularly those who helped develop the 2019
recommendations on resource allocation

,
the 2020 approach to hubs and participatory resource allocation
,
and the grants strategy relaunch

.

We can move this discussion to meta
if the thread becomes unwieldy. (:

*1. Current state of movement funding*

1a. Roughly what % of global fundraising is currently allocated to
affiliates, or other entities + projects not run by the WMF? (*my poor
guess *)

1b. Roughly how much regional fundraising goes directly to major
affiliates?

1c. Which affiliates with annual plan grants have been growing over time,
and how is the expansion of existing budgets approved?

1d. Which affiliates have gotten their first APG in the past five years,
and how has that developed over time?

*2. Current review process*

2a. How is funding by WMF of movement affiliates (general operations, and
large specific projects) currently determined? Does the Board engage with
this?

2b. Is the funding of affiliate work linked to goals of increasing equity
across the world, and supporting underrepresented communities? If so, how /
how is this visualized?

2c. What other mechanisms for focusing and allocating resources are good
examples to replicate?

2d. What other bilateral projects (such as joint projects, and grant or
microgrant programs), run by large affiliates and hubs other than the WMF,
currently exist? Which seem like examples to replicate?

*3. Desired futures!*

3a. What movement bodies are expected to play any role in recommendations
about funding (extending, withdrawing, denying funding) to new and existing
affiliates, now that the FDC is inactive?

3b. Is there a possibility of the FDC returning? How do past FDC members
have about this? What was found to be good and bad about the FDC process?

3c. What elements of this is the global council expected to take up in
its first year? What elements are hubs expected to take up, now and in the
future?

3d. What roles do we envision each of {WMF, hubs, affiliates, community
members} to play in reviewing movement budgets/plans and the volume and
focus of future funding [re]allocation?

This involves the single Recognitions Subcommittee, though the creation of new
categories of Affiliates (beyond the 3 current types of User Groups, Chapters,
and Thematic Organizations) would be based on the WMF Board’s approval.

Recognitions Subcommittee.

Recognitions Subcommittee, unless the lack of meeting those standards involves
conflicts within or between Affiliates, whereas that would then involves the
Conflicts Subcommittee.

> assisting in the ongoing development of affiliates
Right now this is not actively done due to limitations to the AffCom Charter,
though needs across the Movement are increasingly demonstrating how much this
is needed. AffCom is currently developing some training and supportive
materials, and there are opportunities to continue focusing in this area.

This is currently not within anybody’s scope.

Not a committee of the WMF Board per se, yet we have 2 Board liaisons with whom
we regularly work and report our ongoing efforts. Likewise, we have ongoing
support and engagement with various elements of the WMF staff itself (e.g.,
Legal, Trust and Safety, etc.)

At this point, we neither award nor revoke funding, as that is beyond our
scope. We are working closely with the Community Resources team to improve the
affiliate support.

We have support from WMF staff related to conflicts (e.g., Legal, Trust and
Safety, Grants, etc.) as needed.

Thanks for your thoughtful questions, Risker. These are all helpful and present
opportunities to try to share more about the volunteer efforts AffCom Committee
members try to contribute across the Movement.

Thanks for these questions, Isaac. There is a small, ad hoc committee of
current AffCom members who are serving as the Elections Committee. New members
are selected by the current AffCom Committee, based on community input per our

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania Updates

2021-05-17 Thread Winnie Kabinte
Dear Wikimedia Community Members,

As promised, here we are providing more updates around the development of
Wikimania 2021!

With only 2 months and 26 days left, we are walking steadfast into the
first-ever virtual development for the biggest Wikimedia community event of
the year!

Without further ado, here are a few updates to kick start the week:

   -

   Session submissions:
   -

Program submissions will open on May 21st. Proposals can be submitted
as a Movement Group, Affiliate, Individual or as a Collective of
  individuals.
  -

More details will be coming later this week, so please be on the
  lookout for updates.
  -

   Scheduling Principles:
   -

We are taking into consideration all time zones for Wikimania and
will have a broad mix of UTC start and end times.
  -

We plan to have a more elaborate programme on the weekend, less heavy
program on weekdays to accommodate diverse individual schedules.
  -

There will be a combination of live and on-demand content.
  -

The first day of the five days of Wikimania is dedicated to the
  Hackathon.
  -

There is a two-hour break each day.
  -

On-demand content will be available during the event.
  -

   Programming principles:
   -

Unconference and Networking activities run concurrently during all
  five days.
  -

The Collective & Individual Submissions tracks are running
  concurrently.
  -

Level of participation and expertise level will be taken into
consideration (Three levels of content for: newcomers, intermediates, and
  experts).
  -

There will be on-demand content and support dedicated to newcomers.
  -

   Wikimania registration
   -

Since this year will be our first-ever virtual experiment for
Wikimania, and we want to maximize attendance; there will be no
registration costs for event participants! Registering for the 2021
virtual Wikimania will be free of charge!
  -

We are opening up an additional Call for volunteers: Fill out the survey
   here.
   -

Trust and Safety tasks (Session Moderation, Help Desk Support and
  enforcing Trust and Safety Policy)
  -

Session Submissions Peer Review (Reviewing Session Submissions and
  logistics)

This is all folks! We’ll be back with more news next Monday and on Friday
the 21st with details around session submissions!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Best Wishes,

[Wikimedia-l] Campaign: #1lib1ref - May 2021

2021-05-17 Thread Venus Lui
Hello Librarians and library lovers,

>From May 15th to June 5th 2021, we will be joining together once again to
continue providing reliable and factual information to the world through
Wikipedia and the #1lib1ref. To participate is easy, simply add a citation
to Wikipedia!![1]

May Experiments

This May we are focused on:

   -

growing the campaign in East and South East Asia with local affiliates
-- if you want to help contact Felix Nartey via (fnar...@wikimedia.org)
   or Venus Lui (vlui-...@wikimedia.org).
   -

working closely with AfLIA to sustain our relationship with the
Librarians network in Africa. Last year the participation from African
Librarians was overwhelming, recording about 84% of the total numbers of
edits attained (33,257). This surged our campaign to a staggering increase
of 394%YoY for the May campaign.[2]
   -

Supporting our long standing partner for the campaigns, IFLA as they
   explore citations on Wikidata [3][4]

How can you engage?

We invite you to engage in three ways:

   -

Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
   Wikipedia.[5]
   -

Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
   or region.[6]
   -

Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
   world.[7]

Join local events or editathons

If you are organising an activity virtually or providing a space to teach
or train people with an interest in the campaign, please add your event(s)
here.[8] In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities
and advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[9] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[10]

Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary! Add your activity to the campaign dashboard to help
us track the activities happening across the globe.[11] This is very
important for us to monitor the reach and success of the initiative.

Learn more in our office hour

Join the next campaigns office hour on Thursday 13th May at 3:00pm UTC,
where we will share about strategies in Asia and Africa, under the
theme “exploring
regional or thematic approaches to campaigns in tackling topics of interest
”.[12]

Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!

You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
librar...@lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1...@lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[13]

Cheers,

Venus Lui

Does the Affiliates Committee continue to be a committee of the WMF Board of

Is it expected to have any role in recommendations about funding (or
denying/withdrawing funding) to new and existing affiliates, now that the FDC

What range of conflict resolution tools will be available to the conflict

These were the first questions that came to me when I first saw your email. I

there is something to work with for now.

The Recognitions Subcommittee is involved with helping new Affiliates (User
Groups, Chapters, and Thematic Organizations) to form and be recognized groups
within the Movement. This involves clarifying their scope and ensuring there is
no confusion in overlap of intentions.

The Conflicts Subcommittee helps Affiliates when conflicts arise within or
between Affiliates, including attempts to resolve these issues or ideally
prevent them if possible.

I hope this is helpful, even in this shortened form.

Thank you.

Jeffrey, could you please link to a description of the roles and
responsibilities of members of the two subcommittees? You've mentioned the
expected skillset for each, but have not explained what they are actually
expected to be responsible for.

Thanks,
