Re: [Wikimedia-l] Facebook marketing inside pt.wikipedia

2016-02-19 Thread
I also noticed the practice in idwiki to promote Facebook page of the Wikipedia
in question through site notice. During this year’s discussion of Chinese
Wikipedia’s annual strategy, One of our proposed aims is to promote outreach
through the Net. I once had a plan to promote our Facebook pages (now
diversified roughly by regions, no unified Facebook pages for us), twitter,
weibo and IRC channels (there’s a renaissance of IRC in zhwp during the past
year) through a site notice. Though our twitter is just a feed of our items on
OTD, FA, GA and DYK columns, and Weibo account, which once accepted funds from
IEG, is dormant since the last Wikipedia blockage by Peking (thus weakens the
effect to absorb more editors). The plan is temporarily on hold. I am thinking
that there’re still many of the members of Chinese community do not have an
awareness on Net neutrality, so even I do not make any consultation on this
plan, I think this plan will be passed with no objections (to make it more
easy, generally requests to put up particular site notices are usually not
noticed by ordinary users).

Best wishes,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] TPP - copyright

2015-11-06 Thread
Possibly Wikilivres, a site which is used to store PD works in Canada (but
copyrighted works in the USA, i.e. a work which the author died 50 yrs ago
or published by an organization 50 yrs ago), is also being affected. When
the TPP was under negotiation, I was thinking whether it should move its
base to a non-signatory of the TPP which currently shares similar copyright
terms with Canada and has a lenient censorship regime (e.g. Hong Kong).
Though I doubt whether the rule is only applicable to works published after
the agreement is in effect.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2017

2015-10-01 Thread
Hello everyone,

I've just noted this (
https://docs.google.com/document/d/19BpGCFdr9DZIldNTwS66MjFGDPpOs79oy9t-uZ9iIxg/edit)
and the attached drafts <
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VEPKqDzWiujSCy4qM6KKnaRPyEM-gerInbYmGR7QYUo/edit>,
<
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CjWKJDvrGXrXY_1aTZNEWskQFFdJSfn06OrjoGXOeOg/edit>.
I wonder if they are useful, though I keep in mind that they are just
drafts. If so, will Montreal experience a walkover?

Also found is a meeting minutes of a recent meetup of the Perth community <
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Perth/21>, it seems that
they'll move forward, though their bid page is hollow at the moment.
Oceania is also a region that Wikimania has never come before.

Thanks Jake for mentioning our Chinese counterpart of the TWL in the
newsletter. But it seems that there're only a few done since then...
Workflow unimproved, no work assignments, etc.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Which Wikipedias have had large scale bot creation of articles this year?

2013-11-27 Thread
Hi all,

In Chinese Wikipedia, there're no such bots to create lots of biological
articles - Ranyv, one of my colleagues there, said that Chinese is not a
language adopting the Roman alphabet, thus it is difficult to generate
translation names for those species - unlike Vietnamese and others, they
can use the binomial name as the article name. But there are some users use
AWB to create articles for places, Taipei Metro stations, etc.

As I know, in Vietnamese Wikipedia, such situation happens. I've heard that
there is a Vietnamese robot user (Cheers!-bot) create lots of articles
about biological species, making its article count surpassing the Chinese
(and Portuguese?) one, over 750,000 articles. That sparked a small-scale
debate among the Chinese Wikipedian community.

Cheers,
