[Wikimedia-l] Re: Auction at Christie's

2021-12-03 Thread Amy Vossbrinck
Hi Jimmy:

Go for it! Any time in life when, as individuals, we have something to
give that can better the life of others, we should make the most of the
opportunity. No matter where you decide to donate the proceeds from the
auction, it will be of benefit to the recipient(s).
It surely seems you have checked all the "legal boxes" beyond that, I would
always go with "follow your heart". Life is too short to be overthinking
everything.

[Wikimedia-l] Posting of 2015-16 Risks Document

2016-01-20 Thread Amy Vossbrinck
Hello All:

Thanks to an alert Community Member, it has come to our attention that due
to an oversight, the 2015-16 Risks Document was not posted with the 2015-16
Annual Plan. We apologize for that.

Traditionally the Risks Document has been a part of the Annual Plan, either
included in the text of the plan or in the appendix. The decision was made
last year to create the Risks Document separately and it was inadvertently
not posted when the 2015-16 Annual Plan, Budget and FAQ were posted.

The document was completed in July 2015; therefore the language may not
reflect any recent developments.

You will find the 2015-16 Risks Document posted here as part of the Annual
Plan:

2015-16 Annual Plan and Risk Document

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Future of Wikipedia

2015-07-14 Thread Amy Vossbrinck
Hi Renata:

Please don't despair. When I was growing up (I'm pushing 69) there were
definitely encyclopedias but they surely were not the *only research tools*.
Information was available, you just had to really dig for it - go to the
library, comb through the card catalogue, go into the stacks, find the
books, gather the information you needed, write it out by hand on paper
(there were no copiers), and note the source for the information on the set
of 3 x 5 index cards that you collected for the research project; or have
the research librarian retrieve the newspapers, or periodicals, or white
papers or mirco film and repeat what you did with the books; write it out
by hand on paper (again, no copiers), and note the source for the
information on the set of 3 x 5 index cards that you collected for the
research project.

Then you took all the information home, hand wrote the paper and once you
were happy with it, you typed it out on a manual typewriter, making sure
that you spaced it so that there would be enough room at the bottom for the
footnotes for each particular page.

If you had to make more than one copy, you put carbon paper in between the
sheets of paper and if you made a mistake, you carefully corrected every
page, making sure not to smudge the carbon or allow the papers and the
carbon to shift out of alignment.

If you needed more than 4 copies you typed the paper on a mimeograph
stencil. If you made a mistake on the stencil, you used a mat knife and
carefully scraped the error off the back of the top sheet, cut a corner off
the stencil at the bottom and inserted that in the space between the top
sheet and the stencil back and typed the letter(s) again, making sure that
you did not accidentally let the top sheet or the stencil slip in the
typewriter roller, because if you did all of your alignment would be off
for the rest of the paper. There was a fluid to correct errors, but it
never worked very well. When the paper was done, you put the stencil on a
mimeograph machine and cranked it by hand until the stencil impression was
no longer deep enough to make copies. If you needed more copies, you had
to cut another stencil by re-typing the entire paper.

I know this probably sounds like I had to hike 20 miles to school with
snow up to my waist - which I didn't - but I offer it only to say that we
humans are a pretty persistent and creative bunch and when determined
enough we can make things work. Sometimes, having to really dig for
something makes it all that much more precious.

Take care, Amy

 Hi.

So I saw this YouTube video yesterday about kids reacting to printed
 encyclopedia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7aJ3xaDMuMnoredirect=1

It made me sad. And very fearful of the future of Wikipedia.

These kids do not appreciate knowledge and information because they grew up
with its abundance. When I was growing up (and I am only 30), printed
encyclopedia was the only research tool. These kids will never know the
frustration when you tried looking something up in those dusty volumes only
to find minimal information (stub) or, worse yet, nothing on the topic.
And the nagging feeling it left you with because your curiosity was not
satisfied and you thirsted for more, but there was nothing else! And so
when Wikipedia came around it was this wondrous thing where information was
seemingly limitless and endless. And it was expanding at dizzying speeds.
And you could add more! It was the answer to my childhood fantasy of having
the limitless encyclopedia that answered every questions. And it filed my
heart with joy and satisfaction not unlike the joy of a child in candy
story (yes, I am a geek).

Those kids never deprived of knowledge and information will never know how
precious it is. They will not have the same love that is required to edit
Wikipedia and write quality articles. And it makes me sad.

 Liam writes:
It would be good if the WMF would *try to set a good example* by following
the rules that it sets for others, itself.

This is not only good, but necessary, if we want any sort of coordination
of planning and strategy across the movement.

This year's plan was much later than expected — the first draft shared a
week ago — motivated by recent changes in senior staff and plans,
particularly shifts in engineering and the creation of the community
engagement department. As all have noted, this leaves little time for
public or board feedback, and less for dialogue about that feedback. I
suspect a draft plan 2 months earlier would have been very useful *all the
same*, even knowing it was bound to change due to the reorganization. This
highlights a basic problem with having static annual plans in a quickly
 changing environment.

I thought we would move away from the 'static annual' planning model this
year, and this still seems to be the intent, just delayed. I hope the
current plan draft will be the last to follow the old model, and plan
updates will become more flexible and frequent this year. In that case, we
can still aim to get public and expert thoughtfully, say by mid-July,
specifically inviting input from affiliates and community projects that
have excellent goals and plans. Then this feedback can guide the
implementation of the plan from July on, and guide the development of any
 mid-year update of the plan.

Regardless of the deadline mentioned on the publication page, the Board is
discussing the plan at its monthly meeting on June 11, and will review a
summary of community feedback as of June 9. [The board approval vote is
indeed at the end of June, but by the time the board meets to review that,
it is an up-or-down vote with no time for revision.]

 Pine writes:
It does make sense to me that there would be at least a month between
publication of the full draft plan, including the documentation requested

More data detail is needed, even for this draft. But given how late
everything was, I appreciate that things were published for the community
as soon as they were available, despite being in a draft state.

I think that the WMF audit committee or the WMF Board might be in a better
position than the FDC to do a thorough review of the plan, including
holding public Hangout meetings in which the plan is discussed, much like
how government legislative bodies review proposed budgets in public.

A fine idea. Let's try it and see how it works: a public discussion,
inviting a set of voiced participants making a stream available to all,
even if some invitees cannot make it. The third week of June would fit the
current compressed schedule. Such a public discussion would also be a
chance to make [more] connections between WMF planning and movement
 strategy.

[Wikimedia-l] Timothy Sandole and (apparently) $53, 690 of WMF funding

2014-04-01 Thread Amy Vossbrinck
Hello All:

I have been following this thread with great interest and a kind of deeply
appreciative fascination.

First to say that I am relatively new to WMF - having been on board for
just a bit over a year. Previously the jobs that I had pretty much covered
the entire waterfront:

Summer jobs in high school
Jobs while in college (didn't we all do that!)
4 years in a combination of corporations and small businesses
17 years as a volunteer as I raised my two sons
17 years in non-profits (helping to found 3 of them)
2 years in county government
2 years as a scheduler for a Presidential campaign
and most recently, just before I came here, 6 years as a scheduler for a
US Congressman.

She must be 'old as dirt you are thinking - well not just yet - and among
other things that set WMF apart - they do not discriminate on the basis of
age :-) :-) :-)

WMF is unique in so many ways from all the other places I have worked, just
to name a few:

Basic operating manual: Assume good faith! Look for the truth! Express
your views in an unbiased way! (a slight rewording of the rules for
editing).

Everything is discussed in the open.

Everyone is welcome to express their opinion.

The leadership (all the way to the top) openly apologizes when mistakes
are made.

Rather than dig in and insist on continuing processes that don't work,
people at WMF put their heads together and look for a different solution.
Much like the point in the movie Apollo 13 when they discover that the
air in the stranded capsule is slowly killing the astronauts. The team is
told to bring everything to a meeting that the astronauts have available
inside the capsule. They all come into the room shouting and pointing
fingers at each other in an effort to lay blame regarding what went wrong.
At some point Ed Harris, who plays the White Team Flight Director, yells,
Let's just work the problem! WMF is good at working the problem.

When I reflect on the above, I ask, what if the entire world worked this
way, or even half the world, or even just enough people to get us to the
tipping point. It would be powerful stuff.

I don't intend to imply that we are looking at perfect - but then, life is
not about perfection of action (we are after all human), it is about
perfection of intention which is not that from assume good faith.

Take good care, Amy

Thanks very much for sharing this . It is, indeed, inspirational .

 Hi everyone,

Each year that we run the fundraiser, readers write in really lovely notes.
Please take two minutes to listen to our readers.

The story I like to tell is that whilst I had heard of Wikipedia but only
looked at it a few times thereafter, when the 2004 Tsunami occurred the day
after Christmas, mainstream news organisations (TV, newspapers) were all
away from their offices. That day I turned to Wikipedia to try to
understand the scale of the event. It was Wiki editors 'on the ground' that
created the sort of information and coverage usually considered the
province of rolling news organisations only. This I now dub my 'Wiki
 Epiphany'.

Wikipedia is an amazing service. Almost always, I am able to find
information on subjects I am interested in. Thanks and Kudos to all staff
 and volunteers!!

My world has been opened up time and time again by Wikipedia. From studying
Detroit and computer programming to finding unbiased information on
America's history, Wikipedia has been a beacon of free speech and
information for over ten years. Sometimes, I just sit in awe of the fact
that the greatest accomplishment of man was assembled mostly by volunteers,
people who just wanted to make the world a better place.

Its made life easier for me and expanded my knowledge by allowing me to
more easily find trusted and verified information on the internet. It
organizes all the noise out there on the web and gives a great concise to
the point fact summary of what I want to know. Thank you and thank you to
the millions of volunteer editors. Wikipedia is a necessity in my life and
 not just a luxury.

Wikipedia is a source of unbiased information. The caveats and notes from
the editors alert to questionable information. The links within the
articles are amazingly helpful and have led me on wonderful information
 expeditions.

I'd like to thank the entire staff of wikipedia and its editors for my high
 school graduation.

It's impossible to put in words. I cannot imagine Planet Earth without it
[Wikipedia]. It has changed my life forever.

My 17 year old son uses you constantly. You have made him a smarter human
 being.

You guys are ^^%$#* unbelievably awesome, keep it up!

web sites like Wikipedia are invaluable and I felt it my duty to try help
 even if only a tad.

 so much of the Internet has turned into self serving and unreliable junque;
so I am very, very grateful for the Wiki resource.

I regard W as the best and most reliable source of information available
anywhere. I don't know how you do it so please keep on with your Excellence
 }i{ That;s a butterfly for you
This is one of the best things on the internet. It goes back to the
original development of the internet and has remained ethical and true to
its origins. There appears to be no discrimination and it is available to
 everyone at no cost.

I am 60 years old and I am still so cruious and interested in so many
things. Wikipedia gives me reasonable information whenever I may want it.

I use wikipedia all the time and credit it more toward my education than
 college did!

It's nice to see humanity get together without any external forces for a
 common good!

I am inspired by the high quality of Wikipedia and the high ideals of its
founder and its myriad contributors and editors. What a magnificent
collaborative human achievement you are building!

It has simultaneously answered and given me more questions than I can
 comprehend.
This represents to me what college should be like. Free and collective
 knowledge by and for all.

When I want to know something, I google it and 99% of the time Wikipedia
has what I want to know. Even drinking arguments, about what Biff from Back
to the Future is doing now, are solved by Wikipedia. It's all there.

Without Wikipedia I would be about 30% less intelligent. :(

it is like a gift from the gods of knowledge

I am a teacher and a writer, and I am amazed how often Wikipedia is useful
to me. I consider Wikipedia to be one of the great democratic projects
maybe ever, and it is one of the reasons why I try to stay optimistic about
 the world. Thank you.

I honestly feel like the next generation of humans in general, will be much
smarter than the previous because of this site. Well, at least they will
know a whole lot more useless shit. I've heard (don't know for sure if it's
true, doesn't matter) that the bigger a person's brain is, typically, the
smarter that person is. So, if that is true, I think it's likely that
because of this site, in about 50 years, humans will have huge heads. Their
heads will look like the aliens' heads did in attack from mars. If y'all
ever get into commercials for whatever reason, you could use that and
probably make it really funny :)

Never let it be said that one person can't make a difference. Clearly this
young man was all about reaching out to others and making an impact
everywhere he went. The planet and many people on it benefited from his
kindness for the brief time he was here.

Thank you, Jackson for all you gave to make the word a better place.

encouraging civility, and [obsessively] reviewing recent changes.

Jackson was a Teahouse host, an instructor in the Education Program,
and the lead on a Video Tutorials Project through the WMF. User:Go
Phightins! originaly adopted Jackson but he went on to run his own
adoption school and facilitated a Western Michigan University course
himself. Among his userboxes he said, This user is not a Wikipedia
administrator but would like to be one someday.

Jackson was born in 1992 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated Mattawan
High School and was Senior Class President there. At Western Michigan
University, he was a 2011 Medallion Scholar. He worked at the Waldo
Library at the reference desk and volunteered for the National
Alliance for Mental Illness. He was one of three students in the
nation invited to represent the US at the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent’s Global Youth Conference in Vienna in 2012.

Jackson had recently proposed a WMF Individual Engagment Grant called
Reimagining Wikipedia Mentorship. I think this project is incredibly
important and should be pursued, User:EpochFail wrote in an
endorsement. The grant scored highly and looked likely to be funded.
A very interesting concept...may become a 'keystone piece' in the new
editor onboarding process. wrote one IEG committee member. Another
wrote, Taking a 'Teahouse approach' in building sustained motivation
and preventing editor dropouts is a wonderful opportunity to develop a
true mentor-mentee support system that would increase the activity of
new contributors. Finally, Proposers are highly qualified and driven
mentors with a useful background in teaching new editors and
 understanding the learning process.

He was excitedly planning a trip to Australia in the coming weeks.

On Wikipedia, Jackson earned barnstars in Mentorship, Random Acts of
Kindness and Resilience. Friends and teachers glowingly recalled his
sense of humor and his hard work ethic.

His last edit to our site was on October 21 2013, the day he died.
Jackson welcomed an i.p. editor to Wikipedia: Thank you for your
contributions, such as the one you made to Nikah mut‘ah. I hope you
like the place and decide to stay.

Please leave remembrances and condolences at
http://enwp.org/User_talk:Jackson_Peebes. We'll try and contact the
family and share your thoughts with them. You can read more
reflections on Jackson's amazing life there. Donations to the
Kalamazoo NAMI chapter would have made Jackson very happy and are the
 family's wish.
