That's the point; it would not matter if women contributed so long as it's

Actually many more than half, as there are barriers other than gender.

I agree.
Women vs Men has never really stood out as a point of debate before and
ideally shouldn't.

 The discussion is open.

It would be worth if someone attacks a woman for her opinion.

There is more a big barrier in the participation to this thread connected
with a strong level of English to be required to read and to answer to this
 thread.

I see more a cultural and linguistic gap that a gender gap.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Warning: Wikimedia-l Google Group

2015-01-07 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
This is probably related to a group that calls itself India Against
Corruption.
A similar tactic was employed by them on the India Community.
You may look up archives of Wikimediaindia-l and Commons-l.
You could also read up on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Long-term_abuse/India_Against_Corruption_sock-meatfarm

You may have already received a message indicating that you've been
added to the Wikimedia-l Google Group; if not, you likely will soon.

In case it's not clear, this Google Group is in no way affiliated with
Wikimedia-l, the Wikimedia Foundation, me, or anybody you'd ever want
to be friends with.

If you do find yourself subscribed, I strongly urge you not to engage
in any way. Report it to Google (not to me or the list) as an abusive
subscription using the link at the bottom of the message, and leave it
be.

If you find yourself being impersonated or wrongly implicated in this
latest round of troublemaking, don't fret. Nobody will hold it against
you, and in fact you'll have everyone's sympathies.

I had problems with two questions:
  * Are you concerned that somebody would change or remove your

assumes that removing a comment is bad; I would have answered Yes when
appropriate per law or policy but there was no such option.
  * Do you read the rationales in the discussion before making the final

sometimes policy and process requires it, sometimes not. (For instance

there is payment involved, the WMF apparently won't support that.

Is that really a good rule to have? I don't think so. Many organizations
have added material directly to Wikipedia, in some cases with the guidance

Wikimedia mission, and with much support from the Wikipedia community. I
don't think it's a great idea for the WMF to distance itself from such
projects on the basis of paid editing.

Subject: URGENT call for geographical diversity in Wikimedia @ GSoC
   To: Wikimedia developers wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org

Please forward this email wisely. Yes, we need your help getting the
 word
   out.

So far, all our GSoC candidates come from only two (neighbor)
 countries:
India and Sri Lanka. While we are very happy seeing how popular
 Wikimedia
is among technical students in the Indian subcontinent, we are
 concerned
about the lack of candidates from anywhere else.

   https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2014#Candidates

GSoC 2013 had accepted students from 69 countries [1], and we have
participants from eight.[2] We can discuss about the deep causes of
 this
situation but... Considering that we have less than 9 days before the
  GSoC
deadline for students (March 21 @ 19:00 UTC) we should focus on finding
  new
   candidates.

There is still time to become a strong GSoC candidate for Wikimedia.
 Many
project ideas in our GSoC page (linked above) have mentors available
 and
  no
candidates yet. Go for them! Also, since our evaluation of candidates
 is
based on their proposals published in mediawiki.org, Google's deadline
  is
not a hard stop to keep improving your plans together with your
 mentors.
April 7 is when we need to decide how many slots we will request,
 meaning
how many teams (candidates and mentors with a common plan) we believe
  that
can complete GSoC 2014 successfully. That date is more than three weeks
   from now.

Diversity is an important factor for Wikimedia. We are putting a lot of
effort promoting gender diversity in our outreach programs, and we are
seeing good progress. It would be surprising to realize that a global
project like Wikimedia has a serious problem with geographical
 diversity.
Your ideas and actions to fix this situation are welcome.

Dear members of the Wikimedia Movement:

In the past weeks, I've taken the decision to resign to my position of
Executive Director of Wikimedia Argentina. This decision was presented
 to
the Board of the chapter past Saturday and it was accepted.

For personal and professional reasons, I've decided to return to my
country, Chile, in the following weeks and start a new stage of my
 life.
Two years ago, I was presented with the opportunity of living in
  Argentina
and working for one of my passions. This was a big challenge for me: I
  had
to leave my country and my family and work in a foreign country. These
  last
18 months have been a unique experience and I've learnt a lot,
 becoming a
better professional and a more mature person. However, at the same
 time I
feel that I need to move on and continue with new projects and
  challenges.

Certainly, this has not been an easy decision for me, because I'm very
  fond
of this work, the people that have participated in our activities and
 the
projects we worked on and we are still working on.

I leave the Association in a very different position than when I took
office. We have several ongoing projects and we regularized all the
  delayed
paperwork. We became the first organization from a developing country
 to
get an Annual Plan Grant via FDC and have been one of the best-graded
chapters in both processes. We are now a reliable and serious
  organization,
continuing a process of professionalization that can improve our
  programs,
making them more efficient and more effective. Clearly, this has not
 been
only due to my work, which is why I thank the Board of the Chapter that
helped me in everything and to María Cruz, which has been a great
  colleague
   these months.

My main interest is that Wikimedia Argentina continues to grow, which
 is
why we have decided that my departure occurs at the end of March. This
  will
allow us to work calmly to ensure the continuity of the ongoing
 projects
  of
Wikimedia Argentina and the transfer of knowledge once the new
 Executive
Director takes office. In any case, I will continue to participate as a
member and Wikimedia volunteer, once this period expires. By request of
  our
Board, I will also attend the next Wikimedia Conference, so I will be
  able
to transmit the experiences of Wikimedia Argentina in the last year.

I appreciate the trust placed in me by the Board and all the members of
Wikimedia Argentina and their support all these months. I'm sure they
  will
continue the great work we have done lately.

   Kind regards,

   *Osmar Valdebenito G.*

No, that's the filter you have to explicitly opt out of.

In any case, discriminatory or defamatory filter labeling is something
it is in the public interest to inform on and quite possibly protest

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] 2013-14 Round 2 FDC/annual plan grants timeline moved out by a month: proposals due April 1, 2014

2013-12-18 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
I would like to note that this is highly irregular, biased, and unfair.
Last year, Wikimedia India had formally requested for similar concessions
during FDC Round 2 of 2012-13 and were denied the same and we had to wait
for Round 1 of FDC 2013-14 to make a request for FDC funding. WMF needs to
hold itself to the same requirements as it holds us to, at the very least.

We do not understand why the date to meet eligibility requirements has been
moved to March 15th and for whose benefit that has been done.

On Wed, Dec 18, 2013 at 7:52 AM, Anasuya Sengupta
asengu...@wikimedia.orgwrote:

 Dear friends and colleagues,

The 2013-2014 Round 2 FDC timeline and all associated dates are being
pushed back by one month. Here are the key date changes:

 * Deadline for entities to meet eligibility requirements: 15 March 2014

 * Proposal submission deadline: 1 April 2014

 * Community review period: 1 April 2014 - 30 April 2014

 * Staff assessment deadline: 8 May 2014

 * FDC recommendations due: 1 June 2014

 * Board decision due: 1 July 2014

This change in dates has been made for a few reasons. First, it allows for
the FDC and community to review the annual plan and budget of the WMF. As
you know, WMF participated in the first year of the FDC process in Round 1
(October 2012). While this was important, the process ended up being
complicated for both the FDC and WMF. WMF used a (no longer in use)
distinction of ‘core’ and ‘non-core’ activities, and shared only the
‘non-core’ portion of its plan in the FDC proposal, rather than its entire
annual plan (as did all other entities). The timing of the WMF proposal was
also difficult; the allocation was made retroactively at a time when the
annual plan was already six months into implementation. While the FDC and
WMF agree that WMF should continue to participate in the process, they also
agree that participation in Round 1 is not a viable solution.

The FDC and WMF have been discussing how the WMF can be part of the FDC
process in a way that is meaningful and allows for a robust community
review. While the exact details are still to be confirmed, both agree that
the best way forward is for the WMF to participate in Round 2 of the FDC
process. This approach also allows for community review of the WMF plan
through the FDC process, before the FDC recommendations and Board approval
 of the WMF annual plan.

However, given WMF’s size, the first version of the WMF plan and budget is
only ready by April (the planning process begins after a six month
retrospective is analysed by the WMF Board in January/February, and
strategies for the next year are approved). Therefore, pushing back the FDC
timeline by one month would allow for version 1 of the WMF annual budget
and plan to be submitted for FDC and community review.

In addition, we consulted with entities that were likely to apply in Round
2, in order to check their preference: they informed us that pushing the
dates back by one month was, in fact, more convenient to them as well.
Overall, this timing will create an equal 6 month spacing between the two
annual plan/FDC cycles as opposed to the current 7 month / 5 month
 timeframe.

We will be updating all the FDC documentation with these new dates,[1] but
this is a heads up particularly for those intending to apply for Round 2.

Do let us know if you have any questions or concerns about this shift in
 dates.

Best wishes and warm holiday greetings to all of you. Here’s to a
fulfilling 2014 for the entire movement!

We could redirect m. to ...

  * send users to the main page of the user's default language - based on

Obviously it should be similar for other projects like wikinews, etc.

I am not a big fan of building a full blown page at the m. URL, as that

Completely agree that building a new page would be silly, we can just adapt
the portals themselves (already editable on meta) with some mobile specific
styling if it becomes a problem I think.

Personally I'd be a fan sending it to the main 'wikipedia.org' type
 landing
page. Couple reasons (some larger then others):

 * I've never really been a fan of assuming that they want to go to a
 specific languages (biggest reason)
 * Finding 'other' languages on the main page of wikis (both mobile and not)
is possible but significantly easier on the main portal screen.
 * I kinda like the idea of driving home, to anyone who visits that portal
at least, how many different languages we have. I feel like it could take
their fancy to check out some of the ones they may not have before (either
 now or later).

We could work with them to fine-tune the attribution.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Education] How to force to enable Visual Editor

2013-10-15 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Chris, as Ziko put it. Would you like a novice driver with a Learner's
permit to drive on a Crowded street or a High speed expressway or in a
deserted ground?

Visual Editor for newbies has caused a lot of pages to 'break' as I have
noticed.

That would be a great idea; but nobody seems to bother. They just start

Oh no! People editing articles! What a disaster!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference 2014 location decision

2013-10-13 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
As one of the team for the India bid, I must say I'm a bit disappointed in
this decision. It seems like this event will never leave Europe.

 Looking forward to it!

   Dear all,

Following considerable deliberation it is with great pleasure that we
announce that the Location Committee has selected Berlin as the
 location
   for the 2014 Wikimedia Conference.

We received a total of four bids from Germany, India, Italy and Sweden.
  In
selecting the Berlin location we have taken into consideration the
experience and capacity of the team; the travel time and cost for
attendees; the cost of hosting the conference; and the facilities and
  room
   configuration of the proposed venues.

Throughout our deliberations we kept an open mind towards having the
conference in a new location/country, and we have appreciated the
 compact
solutions offered by having all participants close to each other or
  staying
at the same lodging; however, we felt that the Berlin bid provides –
 by a
small margin – the best combination of price, distance and experience
  this
   year.

We thank all the organisations that have entered a bid for their time
 and
effort and we hope that even if they were not selected this year, they
  can
make use of the experience when they organise other meetings that will
   further the Wikimedia mission.

In closing, we would like to thank all Wikimedia organisations for
  placing
their trust in this process and committee, which was an interesting
experience for all of us. In the hope that the Wikimedia organisations
  keep
the hosting choice an open process, we would like to propose a number
 of
potential process improvements[1], and we would invite all the bidders
  and
other interested parties to provide their own feedback.

   Best regards,
