Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] 2013-14 Annual Plan of the Wikimedia Foundation

2013-07-14 Thread Craig Franklin
As SJ and John have pointed out, there are many good reasons to wikify
documents like this, not in the least to allow deep linking, and make
reading more convenient on mediums that don't play nicely with PDF (like
smartphones). So long as the wikified version is protected so as to
maintain its integrity, I don't think there'll be any serious problems.

Cheers,
Craig

The Annual Plan is not really meant to be freely editable. The people
building the plan didn't just forget to make it in to a wiki page, they
no doubt chose not to. If John or someone wants to convert it they're free
to do so naturally, but it's unlikely it will be treated as a canonical
version. As people edit it, it's going to lead to discrepancies with the
original, which no doubt will confuse and annoy people looking for its
 contents.

Presumably the official plan (the master) would remain as the PDF version

Presumably yes. That's the usual procedure for other wikified or translated

The plan was approved by the Board of Trustees on June 28, 2013.

I have converted it to wiki text.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Plan_2013-14

It doesnt have the graphs yet. Maybe someone at WMF can easily create
those graphs from the original document? If not, we'll have to
rebuild them.

Many WMF documents that are not meant to be editable exist in wiki
form. Wiki pages integrate nicely with commons and our localization
tools, generate anchors for every section, render tables that are
easier to copy.

I imagine one reason we don't have more documents in wiki version is
that many of us use Google Docs / Office / Adobe toolchains, for their
real-time collaboration and annotation and elegant-printing
capabilities. And we don't have a one-click export-to-wiki tool (or a
convert-on-upload option) that works on all of those document
formats. That makes it a chore to generate a wiki version, which only
happens when someone remembers to make it so.

Our financial documents are often wikified (quite handy; thank you to
the team for making it so!) -- including recent audited financials and
annual reports.
