Re: [Wikimediaau-l] AusWikiConf
yes, as much as I like the info coming to me (via email) rather than me having to go to the info (on a website), given that there are not so many of us in the first place it would potentially harmful to split off into too many sub-mailing lists. This would potentially be to the detriment of the WM-AUwiki which was set up for precisely this purpose - to organise things and share info. I'd be up for moving such things onto the wiki :-) (quite a handy tool, I'm told) http://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/AusWikiConf_2009 best, Peter PM. Hey folks, what about if we starts a 'events/planning' mailing list and move discussion there? I think there will be a lot of detail to be worked out and if we move to another list, we won't overwhelm this one, or bore people who aren't interested. cheers Brianna 2009/1/12 : > I am in Canberra, well I'm in Sydney now for 2 weeks but I live in > Canberra, and am a recently joined member (I think). I am in Canberra, well I'm in Sydney now for 2 weeks but I live in Canberra, and am a recently joined member (I think). Pretty busy with U3A stuff but if you're short of bodies who are actually in the capital, I can probably contribute some time and do some things that are best facilitated by person to person communication. Re: [Wikimediaau-l] AusWikiConf
I don't know how I'd be able to do some physical legwork, but as long as we're all kept in the loop via the wiki or mailing list, everyone should be able to give input and ideas. I'm already thinking of a few things already. For example, for the AGM we should probably have a huge projection of IRC and/or Skype on a wall for everyone who couldn't come, to see or hear us. Probably similar in idea to how we did it today. 2009/1/11 Confusing Manifestation : > As per my discussion at the AGM, I'd like to get things moving with > the idea of holding a wiki conference this year. Re: [Wikimediaau-l] AusWikiConf
Hi, Thanks for organising this. As one of the people behind the Wikimania bid for Brisbane, I'm happy to let Canberra run with this one, especially as it looks like you've already put a lot of work into it. In fact, I'm fully behind holding our first conference in Canberra, for the following reasons: - It's roughly geographically central, while it's still a fair way from Brisbane to Canberra, it's even further to Adelaide, Melbourne, or Perth. - It's a "neutral location". Everyone thinks that their own city is the best place to hold a conference, which is understandable, but if we have the first one in Melbourne, then the Sydney people will be disappointed, if we hold it in Sydney then the Brisbane people will be disappointed, and if we hold it in Brisbane, the Melbourne people won't be able to handle our weather*! It seems appropriate that the first conference for the *Australian* chapter be held in the Australian capital. - The city is practically built for conferences, and contact has already been made to the Canberra Convention Bureau - I haven't personally been to Canberra yet =) The only potential drawback would be the lack of "boots on the ground", but as noted on the page, there are plenty of people nearby who can help out, and a lot of the work can potentially be done without actually being physically present in Canberra. Of course, I'm happy to help with some legwork, as far as getting people down from Brisbane and making sure that everything runs smoothly along getting us hotels and such. As per my discussion at the AGM, I'd like to get things moving with the idea of holding a wiki conference this year. I've started a page on the wiki (http://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/AusWikiConf_2009) which I'd like people to update, and put forward opinions of the options listed there. In terms of what's written there now, I'm in favour of having a medium scope conference in Canberra around September/October, as long as I can get support in doing the legwork.
