For eg, in commons many images originated from India are deleted or

member can find many such issues, if they are wiki-rooted.

I didn't said I am an 'idea'(l) man. I tried to say, lack of openness of

Praveen, http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Main_Page is the place where chapter
activities are discussed.
By the way, the chapter doesn't mean just the EC, it'll include all volunteer
members once membership can be opened.
Please also remember that the chapter has come into existence only on Jan 3,
2011 and we have had only one meeting so far.
We've tried to communicate as often as possible with the wider community
through
this list and the wiki, but more can be done certainly.

Following is a list of activities (compiled by ArunRam for an internal
discussion) of the chapter prior to registration (which itself turned out to be
a huge exercise):

* We have a open mailing list people can write to. It has started to
work well.
As an example we received an email from community this morning.
* The EC members are now responding to queries or comments that come up
on the
Foundation and India list.
* The Wikimedia. in is up and running. You may have noticed EC members
beginning to encourage community to use this organize their events.
* We have an established internal wiki where our meeting minutes are
published,
EC project plans drawn, contact repositories being built.
* As a team we have learnt to work with each other and understand our
complementary skills, we have evolved mechanisms for decision making, rapid
actions and dealing with conflict openly and objectively. (To me these are
important steps that make effective teams)
* The EC team is paying attention to the OTRS lists. Anirudh is taking
the lead
here.
* The EC has been engaging and met community in some cities
(Bangalore, Delhi,
Mumbai). With grant support form Barry we will be able to do more face to face
meetings to build traction.
* Sundar and Arjuna are engaging with Google. I am engaging with CDAC.
HPN with
Knowledge commission. Anirudh and Srinivas are bootstrapping communities in
Ahmedabad and Indore.
* Arjuna and Anirudh participated and manned stalls at Foss.in along
with
community (Arun Ganesh).
* The EC members have now taken it on them to participate and speak at
external
forums to spread the word about wikipedia and wikimedia: Gautam spoke at a
conference, Arjuna spoke at a international conference in Delhi on
localisation,
Srinivas spoke at a conference in Bangalore, I spoke at a conference in Bhopal
organised by the MP government.
* Chapter teams attended meeting with Barry when he was in India and
attended a
few meetings with Eric and Danese. HPN and I were present for the Jimmy visit.
* Gautam and I have been persistently following up with regular
follow-up
visits to the registrar to close out the Chapter registration. Yes, it has been
painfully slow due to government bureaucracy.
* Chapter EC members have also actively helped run meetups and
academies in
cities - Bangalore, Kannada meetup (held recently), Delhi meetup 2. The many
Academies that Arjuna has helped with.
Individual chapter members co-ordinated many of the hugely successful WP Ten
celebratory events across the country recently. BLR (Arun, Gautam, HPN, Arjuna,
Srinivas and me), Indore (Srinivas), Delhi (Anirudh), Mysore (HPN), Because of
the delay in registration, we have not put these activities under official
chapter functions so far. There are so many other examples of such activities
of
individual members.
See http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sundar and
Anirudh's participation in the movement roles' project for example.

That said, I agree that we should have better and more frequent communications
in the future. Hopefully, we can all do that with more support from community
members.

2011-01-30 Thread BalaSundaraRaman
Praveen,

Forgot to answer one of your questions:
Nos of edit is not criteria. The chapter created as society so there
must be voting system. So not worry!!
 Then what was the criteria?

While there's no hard criteria that I can
give,
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Guidelines_for_future_chapters#Contributor_involvement
 gives
 the guidelines:
As specified in the requirements, involvement of contributors to the Wikimedia
projects is essential to the grounding of a chapter.
However, it is crucial that each chapter remains an entity separate from the
Wikimedia projects. Chapters are independent organisations that group users of
the Wikimedia projects, regardless of their number of edits or roles within the
projects, as well as friends and supporters of those projects.
Founding a chapter with all the admins in the projects, or only active
contributors is the wrong way to go. It is possible that people who are not
active contributors will be interested in the real life commitment to the
Wikimedia movement that chapters enable, while others who are active
contributors will not see the necessity for a chapter. Make sure the balance is
kept between who is part of the chapter and who is not.
The Wikimedia projects are not the chapter's playground and the chapter should
never confer to its members a position of specific power within a Wikimedia
project.

I think there was a discussion on this earlier and Achal or someone gave a
history of how the people came together for this. If anyone can locate the
thread on the list archives, please
share.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_India_chapter#Background_and_Progress
captures
parts of it (and the earlier unsuccessful attempts).

[Wikimediaindia-l] Developers list for India specific discussions

2011-01-30 Thread Hari Prasad Nadig
Hi everyone,

During the weeks running up to Wikipedia 10 event, there was a talk on
requesting a developers list for India specific discussions.

The need for an India specific developers list is quite obvious considering
that we have several Indian language projects on Wikimedia, each needing
specific attention in terms of technology to improve contributions and
community.

Considering that there is growing interest in India about Wikimedia, about
mediawiki - platform that runs Wikipedia and related projects; taking into
account that there is a growing community of developers interested to
contribute, develop on India specific projects, an India specific list of
developers seems to be a necessity.

The initial request for a mailing list was made in December:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26436

However, there hasn't been consensus yet. There was discussion on whether
this would create unnecessary fragmentation.

Here's inviting thoughts, opinions. Or support, if we can gather some for
creation of this mailing list.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the logo of Indian Language Wikipedias

2011-01-30 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear Indic language wikipedians,

As many of you know the default skin of wikipedias (including that of all
Indic language wikipedias) is moved to the new Vector skin some time back.
Please see the below mail that I sent to this list regrading this on *2010
July 1*.

As some of you know, along with this update, the logo of wikipedia is also
updated. The current logo is available
herehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0.

But even though almost 6 months had passed after this major update, only
Bengali http://bn.wikipedia.org, Malayalam
http://ml.wikipedia.org, Urduhttp://ur.wikipedia.org,
and Telugu http://te.wikipedia.org wiki communities had took initiatives
to update the logo. The logo update is still pending for the following
Indian language wikis.

   - Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
   - Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
   - Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
   - Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
   - Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
   - Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
   - Kannada - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
   - Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
   - Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org
   - Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
   - Oriya - http://or.wikipedia.org
   - Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
   - Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
   - Sanskrit - http://sa.wikipedia.org
   - Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
   - Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org

Carry Bass (User:Bastique http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Bastique)
has took initiative to create the new logo for some of the Indian language
wikis. But for languages like Kannada, Oriya, and so on even that is
pending. Even if the new logo is created a bug needs to be filed by the
respective wiki community to change the logo. So for most of the Indian
wikis both these tasks are pending now.

I request the respective language communities to take initiatives to create
the new logo and file a bug for this update. The guidelines for creating the
new logo is listed at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_creation

Please write to me if any of the language communities require any type of
support regarding this.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the default skin of Indian Language
Wikipedias

Hi All,

As some of you already know, *Usability Teamhttp://usability.wikimedia.org
* is driving the task of updating the default skin of all WikiMedia
Foundation wikis to a skin called
*Vector*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vector.
English Wikipedia and some other big wikis have already moved to *Vector
skin* some time back. Apart from the UI, the logo of Wikipedia is also
updated http://blog.wikimedia.org/2010/wikipedia-in-3d/.

Yesterday (2010 June 30) at 10:30 PM IST, some other wikis (that have
carried out the formalities required for the UI change) are also moved to
the new UI. Among this, 3 Indian Language Wikipedias are also there.
Following are those Indian Language wikipedias:

   - Malayalam - http://ml.wikipedia.org
   - Bengali - http://bn.wikipedia.org
   - Telugu - http://te.wikipedia.org

Please note the new default skin and the new logo that are appearing on
these wikis. (You may need to clear the cache to see the changes. )

Now to move your language wiki to Vector, you have to perform the following
two major operations:

   1. Update the logo of your wiki
   2. Localize the Vector skin system messages

Logo update

For some languages, logo is already updated. See the list here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0

If your wiki's logo is missing from this list, then you need to create the
new logo based on the instructions listed on this page.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/About_the_official_Marks

Localizing the Vector skin System messages

For the current update, you need to localize the Vector skin system
messages. To localize the system messages, use Translate wiki -
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page

The current Localization statistics of Vector skin system messages is
available here. http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:GerardM/usability-stats

You can see that many Indian languages (for example, Tamil) are missing from
this list. The reason is, none of the Vector skin system messages are
localized for those languages. Even for the big Languages like Hindi and
Marathi the percentage of localized messages is very low.

So I request the respective Indian Language Wikipedia communities to take
required initiative to switch over to the new Skin. Usability team is
planning for next set of switch over by the end of July. So you have
almost one month to finish these tasks.

Once you finish the above tasks you need to:

   - Let the community know about this upcoming update (Use the village
pump, Site Notice, Mailing list, and so on)
   -
