You seem to be the most omnipresent guy everywhere in Wikipedia as far as
WikiProject India is concerned. I keep wondering how a single person can
devote so much time to the cause of a project as vast as WP:India.

Being at the helm of a very good one-fifth of all potential Wikipedia

However, if you are not prepared to be one that can share time between

 Hi Everyone,

*Update on Wiki11 Pune Meet up:*

On behalf of Pune Community and Pune chapter, we celebrated the 11th
Anniversary of Wikipedia and the 1st Anniversary of India Chapter at
Jnyan Prabodhini, Pune. We started the session with the introduction
by Chapter Marathi SIG (Special Interest Group) followed by Chapter
briefing by EC Member Sudhanwa Jogalekar. Pune SIG lead Mandar
Kulkarni shared a presentation of Marathi Wikipedia which included the
history and the journey of Marathi Wikipedia. The presentation also
explained the common mistakes made by users during editing. The
details statistics of no. of pages, no. of users, no. of articles
since last 6 years and where we stand now was explained in details.

Being Makar Sankranti, as per the Indian tradition we gave Til Gul
(sweets made of sesame jaggery) to all the participants including
the refreshments. (Please note that for next many decades, Makar
Sankranti is going to be on 15th January only and we will have same
opportunity to celebrate the Wikipedia Anniversary on the day of Makar
 Sakranti.)

The next session was handled by senior editors of Wikipedia by
coaching the members in actual wiki academy in the lab. All the new
users created their login accounts and started editing in the
articles. This was very interesting as many members were new to this
would and finding some challenges in tying in Marathi. Some of the
members created new articles and also linked them to English
Wikipedia. Overall, it was a great learning experience for all of us.

 *Next Steps:*

 1.  In the coming months, we have planned number of wiki academies in
English and in Marathi at various places all over Pune.

 2. We are also proposing to have one interesting session during our
monthly meet on every 2nd Saturday.

 Best regards,
 Mandar Kulkarni and other Wikipuneris.

2012-01-22 Thread Vickram Crishna
Who wants copyright free? We want the right to reproduce and distribute
freely, since we have already paid for it.

The amendments on the way are a mess, designed to reinforce the rights of
restrictive copyright holders. It is understandable, since the political
leadership of the nation (of all hues) conflates ownership with
monetisation, but hardly sensible.

2012-01-22 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

It would be best for the content to be placed in public domain.
However, with attribution would also be okay.

The public has already paid for it's production and also for the
creation of its physical copy (by any means).

Some arms of the government do charge for use by foriegners or for a
certain resolution/quality of the physical copy. This must also be
done away with, in my opinion.

The amendments on the way are a mess, designed to reinforce the rights of
restrictive copyright holders. It is understandable, since the political
leadership of the nation (of all hues) conflates ownership with
 monetisation, but hardly sensible.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Supreme Court Says Congress May Re-Copyright Public Domain Works

2012-01-22 Thread Vickram Crishna
To be utterly frank, we cannot continue to think that we must follow the
example of the west. As Wikimedians in India, we have a particular point of
view about copyright, in this case of works created using public money.
Whether or not the USA decides to prevent similar works from being openly
available, kowtowing to the ceaseless lobbying of proprietary content
purveyors, is only incidental to our own attitude. Also note that this is a
Supreme Court decision, the same court that kept persons of a particular
colour in bondage for centuries. It cannot be said to be the democratic
view of the US people.

We must continue to make every effort to see our own country does not fall
into this trap, at a time when the possibility of widespread knowledge
dissemination in the country is just becoming truly feasible. To the extent
that this involves taking on the proprietary knowledge (an oxymoron if
there ever was one) lobby, so be it.
