2014-10-01 Thread Vishnu

Dear Shyamal,

Last year we did Lilavati's Daughters Edit-a-thon on notable Indian
Women Scientists [1]. I am sure the users registered there would be
interested to take part in this too. You could probably alert the event
organizers about this if you know them.

Lilavati's Daughters Edit-a-thon received a better response from Indic
Wikimedians and I am sure they would also be interested to take part in
this.

Best,
Vishnu

I agree with Vishnu.
I also participated in that edit-a-thon and it went fine.

Additionally, I also feel that with festivals around the corner this is a
little short notice and fewer days to be able to participate.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Friday meetup in Bangalore Professional photo and video shoots for community members

2014-10-01 Thread Ravishankar Ayyakkannu
Hi,

On the eve of India Community consultation 2014, we are organizing a
community meetup in Bangalore on October 3rd (Friday) evening 6 PM - 8 PM.

This is a good chance to meet many Indian community members after
Wikiconference 2011.

We will be doing a professional photo shoot and video documentary to tell
the story of Wikimedia India.

I welcome you all to be part of this and be the face for Wikimedia India.

You are also welcome to bring your family for the evening.

Please register here in advance so we can plan for the logistics -

Thanks,

Ravi

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Indian women in science edit-a-thon

2014-10-01 Thread Netha Hussain
Dear Shyamal,

Great initiative! The category [1] for Indian women scientists was created
two years back, during the Ada Lovelace Day edit-a-thon in October 2012. We
have more than 40 Indian women scientists included in this category now,
thanks to the many women-centered edit-a-thons that attract editors'
attention to this topic. I hope to see more articles added to this category
after the edit-a-thon this year!

I was also wondering if there was a project/event page on Wikipedia for
this edit-a-thon. I find it slightly off-putting to have to fill up a
private google form [2] to be able to participate in a public edit-a-thon.
It is also not clear to me if the event is invite-only. I am holding back
from joining the event until the event allows me to participate by signing
up on a Wikimedia page.

User: Fluentflux happens to be a new user who joined Wikipedia today. I
guess they would need some on-wiki help in organizing the event, in which
case I am happy to pitch in after October 9.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] IMPORTANT: Future of work in India -- a community consultation in Bangalore

2014-10-01 Thread Ravishankar Ayyakkannu
Hi Sudhanwa,

Based on
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2014-September/011672.html

The agenda for the meeting is likely to cover these issues:

*Introductions, expectations, ground rules
*SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis and sharing
stories of individual contributors, diverse language communities and
projects
*SWOT for India and Indic languages across South Asia
*Visioning for the movement in India
* Strategies and action plans for the movement going forward (next six
months, next year, next two years)
* Roles, responsibilities and rules of engagement between the different
actors in India

To give few examples on how to approach this agenda, please see:

http://www.slideshare.net/oligoglot/wmf-in-swot

http://www.slideshare.net/oligoglot/wmf-biennial-prioritiesmemo

and

http://www.slideshare.net/oligoglot/wikimedia-foundation-in-india

These slides are 3 years old but are relevant still.

//It is not clear if we want to discuss on on-wiki topics(copy-pasted
material, rules and regulations for admin activities etc.) //

No. This is not a consultation about each wiki project's internal policies.
They are best evolved over a period of time through direct discussions on
wiki directly guided by

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_pillars

and based on precedents in other wikis and local community's vision.

//off-wiki(real world events like seminars, academis, GLAM etc)
activities or any other things beyond these eg. technical things like
language support and WYSWYG editor etc.//

Above are various strategies that answers the questions HOW can we grow
Wikimedia in India.

In my understanding, this consultation will predominantly focus on WHAT
questions.

WHAT is the potential, weakness, threats and opportunities for Wikimedia
movement in India.

WHAT we should be doing and WHAT we should not be doing.

WHO does WHAT and HOW is also an important question but that can only come
after we define the WHAT.
