Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikitech-l] [Wikimedia-l] [X-POST] Universal Language Selector(ULS) Deployment - Phase 1

2013-06-06 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
On Wed, Jun 5, 2013 at 10:58 PM, Peter Coombe thewub.w...@googlemail.comwrote:

What is the rationale for moving ULS from the personal toolbar to the
interlanguage links on some sites? I find this change odd:

 * makes location and appearance of ULS inconsistent between sites
 * personal toolbar seems the conventional place for per-account settings
 and tools
 * features it is replacing like WebFonts live in the personal toolbar
 * interlanguage links are something rather different, taking the user to a
 wholly different site

Thanks for asking, Peter. The options we considered are described in detail
at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/Design#Location_for_the_selector
.

When we tested the top-right position for language settings, it generated
confusion for users on wikis with inter-language links. The top-right area
was a new language-related area and they expected content language to be
changed from there. We were never really satisfied with the UI elements
that WebFonts and Narayam added, so those are implemented in Universal
Language Selector.

In short, depending on the context, language selection may have different
purposes:
* For contexts where the language of content can be modified, the language
list will be shown by default, and the trigger will contain a list of
likely languages.
* For contexts where the content language cannot be modified, the settings
view is provided instead as default. Since inter-language links are not
being initially replaced by the language selector for monolingual wikis
such as Wikipedia, the Universal Language selector will not be used to
change content language.

Cheers!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Report on WebFonts deployment available

2011-12-14 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
Dear all,

A report on the recent WebFonts deployment to 39 Indic language wikis at
Wikimedia is available. Please read it at
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-i18n/2011-December/000359.html.
It's rather lengthy; there was a lot to be said. I'm trying to take away
the technical discussion from this list, because I think it should really
be a global discussion in the right forum. By all means, please continue
discussions on one of the following two mailing lists. I'm looking forward
to your input.

Why would that be a silly question?

We have only just announced the event, as soon as possible, without have a
detailed schedule or topic overview. Nothing potentially relevant is off
the table beforehand, though, so please stay tuned! In about an hour we
have the WMF internal kickoff, and I hope we will be able to communicate
some topics before the year ends. No guarantees though, because I'll
probably not be the project manager of the hackathon ;).

[Wikimediaindia-l] Input methods extension Narayam enabled on Wikimedia Commons and more on input methods and web fonts

2011-11-24 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
Dear all,

As requested at the Wikimedia Hackathon in Mumbai last weekend by Srikanth,
and also in bug 32619[1], *Narayam* was just *enabled* on *Wikimedia Commons
*. I hope you find it useful.

During the hackathon we had a lot of help in adding more key mappings to
Narayam[2], and we are right now at the Red Hat offices in Pune working
together with their localisation team for Indic languages to verify and get
feedback for more Indic languages. The recent work may be deployed next
Monday (28/11), but it could also be delayed a week. The complete Wikimedia
Localisation team is travelling home this weekend, and we haven't reviewed
all the code yet, hence the possible delay.

Another *exciting feature* we are planning on deploying and enabling on
many Indic language projects to increase accessibility, and that we would
like to have your feedback[3] on is *WebFonts*[4]. Many languages do not
have proper fonts easily available to users. This may be because the
operating systems do not ship these fonts, the script has fonts but users
don't know from where they will get them from or how to install them in
their system. Another reason is because the user is reading the wiki from a
shared computer without these fonts. Sometimes it may be because the user
does not know how to configure the operating system for a language or the
user does not have enough permissions to do this. Because of all these
reasons, providing the content in certain languages is problematic.
WebFonts sends the fonts with the data and therefore we expect that
everybody can see the text correctly.

You can also read more about it in the sheets of my talk at WikiConference
India 2011[5]. Gerard Meijssen will soon post a note in all targeted
Wikimedia wikis requesting your feedback.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Translation sprint in Pune on 26 Novermber?

2011-10-24 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
Dear Indian Wikimedians, and those from near Pune in particular,

In November the complete localisation team of the Wikimedia Foundation
(I, Niklas, Amir, Gerard, Santhosh and Alolita) will be in India for
the Wiki Conference India, the Mumbai hackathon and a team meeting.
Our schedule allows for an event in Pune on Saturday 26 November 2011,
if the Pune community thinks this is a good idea. We would like it to
be a localisation sprint, in which we gather as many people as
possible from the Wikimedia community, but maybe also from other open
source translation communities, to work on the translation of
MediaWiki and MediaWiki extensions used by Wikimedia for a few hours,
and have some nice chats while doing that.

We would of course need a venue with a decent internet connection,
enough power, and participants would need to bring equipment that
allows for them to work online in translatewiki.net or offline with a
gettext editor.

Is this something that is doable?

Please find below the notes for the internationalisation triage bug

9 people participated in the triage. Two of the participants were new
to MediaWiki. I'm very happy that the triage attracted new potential
MediaWiki developers!

The triage was to have have two sections, each taking about 30 minutes.
We ended up with a first half of about 55 minutes and a second half

* It looks like a schema change is not needed, and that the
  page_props table can and should be used. Use batches where needed;
integrate that in Linker, LinkBatch and probably Title as well.
Ambitious according to Roan. Roan agrees that having displaytitle as a
page_ field makes more sense *conceptually*. In practice, he prefers
page_props because that avoids a schema change and is still cheap.
Niklas indicated the discussion gave him ideas on how to work towards
  resolving these issues.

The other announced issues were not discussed.

Thanks to everyone participating. Looking forward to the results!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Narayam input methods updated

2011-09-12 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
Dear all,

The Wikimedia Localisation team and volunteer Junaidp have taken an
important hurdle towards better support for Indic languages. After a rocky
start with the Narayam[1] extension on the Tamil language Wikipedia, today a
new version of Narayam was deployed on several wikis in Indic languages and
added to ta.wikisource and ta.wikibooks[2]. It also features a new
interface.

Please give it a try and provide feedback[3] in feature requests, bug
reports. Praise is allowed to go to this list ;). We expect to be adding
many more keyboard mappings in the near future. If you are particularly
looking forward to one, please do not hesitate to make a request for it or
submit a patch you get it even quicker[3].
