[WikimediaIndia-l] Re: WikimediaIndia-l Digest, Vol 2341, Issue 1

2023-11-08 Thread Dr. Abhijeet Safai
(Reposting with minor corrections*)
Dear All,

It is very disturbing to see this kind of language for a past president of
Wikimedia Foundation's India Chapter! I do not want to go into merits of
stands each one are having (for the sake of argument, let's even believe
that Sudhanwa sir is wrong here), but this kind of language is not our
heritage is for sure!

This could have been said in a better way too without accusations (please
note once we start accusing, we cannot cry foul when another person accuses
us in return). I strongly condemn all these baseless accusations. I know
Sudhanwa sir in person and it will take many lives for us to understand his
greatness and his contribution to Wikipedia and Open Source movement! (BTW
he is pioneer of FOSS activities in Pune). He is so great that I also do
not know his greatness in totality. I have understood it in bits and pieces
these things indirectly, because he does not tell them by his own mouth.

This kind of thinking (pacifying) is definitely not mine and I have learned
it from Mahatma Gandhi from his book titled 'My Non Violence' which can be
found on this <https://www.mkgandhi.org/mynonviolence/my_nonviolence.htm>link.
It is freely available in public domain. I strongly suggest people to read.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

Excellent! I am extremely happy to see it. I do not know how much I will be

Dear Sudhanwa,

Greetings!

Thanks for your query. As it was shared with me, the elections were
supposed to be conducted in 2016, hence only the name of the elections is
'elections 2016'. However, they are being conducted in 2017.

As the elections are being conducted in year 2017, the current voter list
is applicable but the name of the elections is 'Elections 2016'.

The delay in the elections had various reasons including account related
issues at banks as discussed with me.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India elections: How to vote?

2017-04-12 Thread Abhijeet Safai
Dear Members,

Greetings!

As mentioned in the previous mail, ballot papers for all 203 the eligible
voters were successfully sent via speed post on 8th April 2017. Let's thank
Yogesh for this. Every ballot paper has been signed by an election
committee member with the seal of Wikimedia India.

Members need to vote 7 candidates by checking the box next to the candidate
name and sign the paper with their member id.

Each ballot paper must have the following for it to be valid

   - Maximum selection of 7 candidates
   - Signature of the member (the signature should match the one on the
   membership form)
   - Membership id (Please check voters list to know your membership id)

Ballot papers should be sent back via registered post in a small self
addressed envelope provided with stamps of 22 rupees. They need to reach
the office address on or before 30th April 2017.

We take this opportunity to wish all the candidates all the best!

In case of any doubts or queries, please feel free to ask any of the
election committee members (myself or Mr. Kishore or Mr. Yogesh).

Thanks and regards,
Election committee

[Wikimediaindia-l] Awareness on validation features to the ballot papers for the Wikimedia India elections

2017-04-12 Thread Abhijeet Safai
Dear All,

Greetings!

The election committee of Wikimedia India has a very important duty to
ensure that the election takes place in a free, open & fair manner. To
enforce its duty, the election committee has taken various precautions to
ensure that each ballot papers it receives from the members are valid & the
votes given by the members are valid.

To ensure this following are the security features we have included in he
ballot papers which have been sent to all the members whose name is present
in the voters list.

   - All of the ballot papers have been signed by one of the election
committee member (Mr. Yogesh). This is to ensure that when the votes will
be counted, we are sure that the ballot papers are genuine.
   - All ballot papers have the original coin stamp of Wikimedia India.
   - Upon receiving the ballot papers, the sign of the election committee
member and seal will be checked to ensure the validity of the ballot paper.
   - On the ballot paper, we will also cross verify the sign of the member
with their membership form and also their member id, to make sure we
received the same papers that were sent to them.

The Election committee hopes that maximum members vote for this election &
make it a success.

Thanks and regards,
Election Committee

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] On CIS's grants request from Wikimedia Foundation

2014-05-14 Thread Abhijeet Safai
I feel that the salaries are ok according to Indian standards. Even they
can be considered less from some Indians seeing the kind of contribution
they are doing.

And again in the end the purpose and work is more important than salary
issue. I have a feeling that my time is being wasted by these kinds of
debates.

Thanks.

   Vishnu,

There have been detailed discussion on how the salaries seem to
overshadow everything else in CIS's proposal of *1.8 Crore*. And it is
not just me, many other community members who have logged their comment
there have felt that the salaries are quite extravagant to Indian
standards. Even the staff assessment takes note of this.

You yourself seem to be drawing around *24 Lakhs *per annum (which is 2
Lakhs per month!) that excludes travel and reimbursements as declared by
you. [1] I'm pretty sure even the readers on this mailing list recognize
that these are pretty huge salaries that we're talking about for Indian
standards in non-profits for the responsibilities outlined.

Yes, it is no secret how much salary I draw or what the CIS-A2K program
budget is and what we have proposed. Members on this list will remember
that once I took over as the Program Director of CIS-A2K, I have ensured
that we bring transparency to the entire CIS-A2K program including the
project budget. We shared the entire A2K budget with the community in May
2013 on this list [1]. Staff salaries which also includes my salary were
disclosed. Members on the list do know that we have taken this transparency
measure much before the current FDC application (or at a time when we were
not thinking about this FDC application). Neither I nor the current CIS-A2K
team had any say in determining the salaries. There has been an extensive
 discussion on this here [2].

I am afraid that in your earlier mail the proposed A2K program plans
number was wrongly quoted along with the per-person salary and I was merely
 highlighting the right facts.

Further, on the FCRA compliance issues, the compliance to Karnataka
Societies Act and the concerns about Conflict of Interest - there are
apparently some grave issues *which require that more documentation is made
public* by the CIS as stated by me at:

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:APG/Proposals/2013-2014_round2/The_Centre_for_Internet_and_Society/Staff_proposal_assessment#Assessment_overlooks_some_grave_concerns

 and at:

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:APG/Proposals/2013-2014_round2/The_Centre_for_Internet_and_Society/Staff_proposal_assessment#Serious_FCRA_violations.3F

We appreciated this effort on Meta here [3]. Again let me appreciate
the community members and your effort to throw light on these concerns. As
stated in the reply on Meta [3], and I quote here for the benefit of the
 members:

CIS has never compromised in getting the best available professional
expertise in complying with the various statutory requirements. So at the
outset we need to state that CIS has always complied with the statutory
advice received from our legal adviser and whenever required also sought
second opinion. Thus to our current understanding we are in the best
possible compliance with the statutory requirements for the not-for-profits
in India. However, because a few of the community members, in the interest
of continuing support to Wikimedia movement in India, expressed serious
concerns, CIS will take every effort to share these with our legal advisers
for their professional opinion. This could take some days, but we are
certainly committed to sharing our legal advisers' opinion on these matters
with the community and FDC at the earliest. This exercise is also important
for CIS as it will help us to put ourselves in much better compliance, if
 required.

We are committed to seeking the opinion of our legal advisers on the
concerns raised, as we respect the voice of the community members,
including you. Also it is more in the interest of CIS to better comply with
 the statutory requirements.

I'm afraid that just the explanations may not suffice here as the
concerns are serious in nature. I sincerely hope that you shall open up the
documents for at least the sake of transparency.

Please note that CIS has never kept its documents closed to open them
again. CIS gets its financial and institutional documents scrutinized every
year and reports to multiple authorities as part of various statutory
compliances. The Income Tax department periodically scrutinizes CIS's
accounts. All the documents are always open for scrutiny by the donors. We
have made every document available that was asked by the WMF's visiting

Yes I know.
But I feel that this is an opportunity to contribute more about her in the
article.

Her work is one of the great works where policies of WHO and other
organizations have changed. The word 'mother and child health' appeared
because of her in the medical literature which was only 'reproductive
health' previously! She in a way shown as how the fields like medicine are
also men dominated and how and when medicine thinks about women - only in
terms of reproductive health! She is a feminist and says it with lot of
pride. Her paper about reproductive tract infections is also a landmark
paper and it has given a new dimension to the subject. In her paper on
white discharge she mentions that nearly 90% women face these issues which
was unknown to medicine till publication of her paper!

She has received awards by the hands of president of India.

Thanks.

 Dear friends,

You may be aware that we (my family) have released a font family earlier.
Here is some background if you are not aware of it.

On the first death Anniversary of Yogini Joglekar(my aunt), our family
released AksharYogini (Normal) Font on 1st Nov. 2006. This font is
primarily for Marathi language but can also be used for Hindi (for any
language using Devanagari). It also has English support. Later on, on the
occasion of Gudhipadwa (Chaitra Shuddha 1, 1931; that is 27th March 2009) ,
we released the additional fonts to complete the AksharYogini font
family. This font family was/is made available on the site
 http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com for free usage/distribution/sharing.

Today, on the occasion of Eighth Death Anniversary of Yogini Joglekar, we
are now releasing an updated AksharYogini font. This font is also
available on the same website http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com

This is an updated font and has support for the new (MS Windows) operating
systems where the internal mechanism for font rendering is changed. Also,
it has additional characters for the current Unicode standard and the Rupee
 Sign is also included.

Most important is the licensing. The new release is under the Open Font
License. As such, all Linux distributions will be able to freely use it in
 their packaging.

Please feel free to use, share, distribute the new font. You can download
 it from http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com .

Give us feedback on my email id or the official id for the font
aksharyogini at sudhanwa.com You can also comment on the guestbook on
 the website.
Do share this news and also the font.

Wishing you a Very Happy Diwali !!

 Thanks and regards

Dear Anshuman,

I don't know you. But one thing I would like to share that people WILL
teach about civility if you will behave in uncivil manner. I do find your
words and tone uncivil.

Whatever you want to say, you can always say it in better ways and believe
me, it always increases chances of getting your point accepted.

But using uncivil way of communication is such a bad thing that after a
limit people will not listen to you at all.

In short, kindly behave!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Samkshepa Vedartham, first book printed in Malayalam goes online

2013-08-29 Thread Abhijeet Safai

wrote:

 Dear all,

This is a great success to share the effort of Shiju and other
Malayalam Wikimedians to bring Samkshepa Vedartham, the first
Malayalam book online. This is a news article which has come on The
 Times of India and copyrighted.[1]

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From a college library in Bangalore, a fragile
copy of the first book printed in Malayalam -- SampkshepaVedartham --
has made a leap to eternity. Thanks to efforts by
MalayalamWikipedians, the book printed in 1772 and kept in Dharmaram
College in Bangalore is now available free on the internet, without
 any copyright restriction.

The scanned copy of 'Sampkshepa Vedartham or Nasranikal Okkeyum
Ariyendunna Sampkshepa Vedartham' will be a major source of
information for those interested in the history and development of
Malayalam script. The book by Italian priest Clement Peanices is in
the form of Christian religious teaching in question-answer format.
The first edition of the book was printed using Malayalam types in
Rome in 1772 and was brought to the state in 1774.

A scanned copy of 'Albhabetum Grandonico Malabaricum', the first book
to use Malayalam types, is already available for public use. It is
believed that the Malayalam portion of this Latin book was printed
using the movable types made to print 'Sampkshepa Vedartham'.

Shiju Alex, an active Wikipedian, had taken the initiative to bring
out 'Sampkshepa Vedartham' on the internet with the support of other
members of Malayalam Wikipedia. Ironically, one of the oldest copies
of the book is housed in the Kerala university library. Though it was
digitized using the state grant, it is not available for public use.

Sampkshepa Vedartham was printed almost 241 years ago. The book gives
insights into the old type of Malayalam numerals. No space is left
between words. Also signs, such as full stops, are not used between
sentences, Alex said. He said the scanned copy of the book has been
uploaded on archives.org, where interested people can read it online
or download the PDF format. We have begun steps to upload it in
Wikipedia commons (an online repository of media files). A digitized
version will also be available in Malayalam Wikisource, he added.

*Wikipedia: Democratic Ritual of Knowledge Transfer *

What can I say about Wikipedia? Ok, let me ask, can you imagine a world
without Wikipedia? I always wonder who wrote, reviewed, edited, curated and
moderated 30 million articles in 286 languages. Answer is you and me and us!

Wikipedia, world’s largest and the most referenced work on Internet, has
been ranked at seventh position globally on Alexa as of June 2013. It has,
estimated, 365 million readers worldwide. Though numbers are impressive
enough to boggle one’s mind, what truly electrifies the spinal cord is the
way Wikipedia functions. Anyone from any corner of the world (Now, you can
ask if earth is round or square? Go to Wikipedia, you will get interlinked
references from Heliocentricism to Geocentrism, from Copernicus to Galileo,
from Copernican Revolution to Renaissance, and thus traverse the complete
circle of knowledge!) can write an article. Then some other volunteers keep
the wheel rolling by editing and validating the existing article and by
adding required citation, views and counterviews. This invisible
chain-reaction keeps flourishing Wikipedia just like an unnoticed food
 chain of natural ecosystem.

On Saturday, 13th July 2013, workshop on Wikipedia was organized by
volunteers of Wikimedia Foundation, in association with SCM, Sophia
Polytechnic, Mumbai. The workshop was conducted by Bishakha Datta and
Rohini Lakshane from Wikimedia Foundation, Mumbai. After giving the brief
on history of Wikipedia, how Wikipedia functions and how one can become a
part of this knowledge thriving community, instructors and volunteers
facilitated SCM students to create articles on Wikipedia. SCM students
successfully created two articles on Dina Vakil, the first woman resident
 editor of The Times of
 Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Times_of_India's
Bombay edition and Ritu Menon, the co-founder, writer and publisher of
India's first feminist publishing house, *Kali for
 Women*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali_for_Women.
The workshop truly helped students to realize that how the power of
technology, information and collaborative effort can drive people towards
 the informed and knowledge-intensive society.

After attending the workshop I couldn’t stop myself and posted the
following note dedicated to my all friends:

 · Do you think 30 million articles in 286 languages is too loud a
figure? If you are sceptical, then that’s great. Go and investigate
further. Provide the correct figure (if the given figure is erroneous) and
yeah provide the reference/citation as well.

Bingo! That’s how the whole Wikipedia has been erected, by sharing and
contributing knowledge. Contribute about your locality, personalities,
 culture, tradition, etc.

 · Believe in good faith. Knowledge is a path not the signboard.
Be in good faith, put information, views and counter-views with reference,
and don’t be judgmental. Neutrality is the nature of Wikipedia.

 · Acknowledge the effort. Not only when you write a research
paper or contribute to Wikipedia, but also when you receive help, love and
care of someone, do acknowledge. Democracy cannot exist without
thankfulness and compassion. Wikipedia is truly democratic way of
knowledge transfer - for the people, of the people, by the people.

 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/internet/Wikipedia-boom-in-Marathi-Malayalam-and-other-desi-languages/articleshow/21518534.cms

*A vibrant vernacular Wikipedia seems to be taking root in India. In the
last eight months, the number of Wikipedia entries has grown substantially
in 20 Indian languages, says a study by the Bangalore-based Centre for
 Internet and Society (CIS).

Wiki, the world's largest online encyclopaedia where anyone can write and
edit articles, didn't have much content in vernacular till a few years ago.
According to the study, Wikis in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi have
added thousands of new articles on various subjects from September 2012 to
April 2013. A few of these pages were viewed more during this period.
Marathi, which had 30 lakh page views per month previously, had another 10
lakh visitors, while Bengali Wikipedia had 14 lakh page views.

While Malayalam Wiki took the top position with an enviable team of 100
plus editors, the number Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit editors came down.
Marathi has 40,000 articles. But most editors in Mumbai prefer to work on
English. Pune has more Marathi editors,' says T Vishnu Vardhan, programme
director, Access to Knowledge project at CIS.

In the last two years, the demand for knowledge in Indian languages has
grown as we have moved to the motto of 'roti, kapda and internet', says
 Vardhan.

One of the reasons for growth is that many browsers now support Indian
language scripts. But this was not the case in early 2000. Though many
wanted to read and type in their own language, there was no browser
support, says Shiju Alex, blogger and Malayalam Wiki editor. Moreover,
many didn't know how to type in their mother tongues.

But once Indian languages were encoded in Unicode, the fonts became
accessible. There was no need to write Malayalam in English and people
started blogging in their mother tongues, says Alex. According to Vardhan,
communities with better literacy rates seem to have taken the lead online.

Telugu Wiki is stronger as internet penetration in Andhra Pradesh is
higher than in places where Bhojpuri or Assamese is spoken.

As with most online language initiatives, the Wiki movement was also
fuelled by the diaspora. Tinu Cherian Abraham, a former board member of
the Wikimedia India chapter, talks about how an NRI's love for Malayalam
 kick-started the project.

But now there are many Wiki foot soldiers in India, including a blind
editor of Hindi Wikipedia and an elderly contributor from Kerala whose
passion for free knowledge has helped him forget his ailments. *

 4. paste the image info from the clip board.

It is really shocking and shameful behavior.
To my surprise, the edit war is still going on there.
I have put the article to my 'watch list'.
It can be a good assignment for those who want to work for the issue of
gender bias to restore the article to its original form. (At least to see
that more and more meaningful information is added) It will be learning
about rules in the process.

I dont know how much time I will be able to dedicate for this right now.
But I plan to edit the article and to fight vandalism there.

Thanks.

Most of us know Wikipedia as the free online encyclopedia, written
collaboratively by millions of volunteers from around the world. I am
 onehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Netha_Hussain
of those writers for the last 3 years. It was by writing articles about
medical sciences that I started contributing to Wikipedia. Later, I was
intrigued by the enormous volume of information available on Wikipedia, and
was curious to find out who actually write them - which made me delve into
the editor demographics. It really made me upset when I figured out that
 only around 9%http://grouplens.org/system/files/wp-gender-wikisym2011.pdf
of the contributors to Wikipedia are women. In fact, I knew that so few
women write on Wikipedia, but I hadn't expected the figure to be as low as
 9 percent.

Diversity of opinion is the essence of any encyclopedia. Having equal
representation from women will bring in wider perspectives, and increase
the neutrality of the articles on Wikipedia. With men creating most of the
content for Wikipedia, certain subjects might be covered more than a
subject that may be of interest to women. Women not writing on Wikipedia
mean that certain subjects may not be receiving the attention they
 rightfully deserve.

The Wikimedia Foundation, the not-for-profit organization that hosts
Wikipedia, had recognized this problem sooner than I did. The Wikimedia
Foundation has launched various programs to bridge the gender gap, and the
latest addition to the list is the WikiWomen's
 Collaborativehttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative
 .

The WikiWomen's Collaborative was created in September 2012 by women
around the world who edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and want
to encourage others to do the same. The project was aimed at helping women
and transwomen to support one another and engage in programs that help the
Wikimedian community to bring in new women editors. A variety of
 eventshttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:WikiWomen%27s_Collaborative/Final_report,
like edit-a-thons, interviews and wikiwomen parties were conducted as a
 part of the collaborative.

 In May 2012, a WikiWomenCamphttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomenCamp
was organized for women in the Wikimedia movement to get together and
discuss about the various issues related to being women involved in the
Wikimedia community with like-minded women. Over 20 women from different
countries participated in the camp to brainstorm solutions for existing
problems that concern women, and suggest future plans to collaborate with
one another. It is customary to conduct a WikiWomen's
 luncheonhttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiChix_2011_Lunch
  at Wikimania https://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/, the global
gathering of Wikimedians, exclusively for the women participants.

P.S : Workshop was conducted in 'Jnana Prabodhini', and many kids and
