[Wikimediaindia-l] Re:  Back for a third round! Apply to join the Training of Trainers for Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom

2022-09-07 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Wikimedians and friends,

*We have an important announcement! *
We have extended the deadline for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom
Training of Trainers for underrepresented regions.

One of our goals for each cohort of the Reading Wikipedia ToT is to form a
diverse cohort where people representing different regions, countries,
languages, and education systems can learn from each other and share with
one another. We've received an overwhelming response to our call for
applications, but there are some regions that are underrepresented. We want
to extend the deadline to ensure we have a cohort representative of the
world.

If you are from Latin America, MENA, East Asia and the Pacific (ESEAP), or
South Asia, you still have until *September 9, 2022*, to apply:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBt_tKvgQ5WbHa5TyOA-aROEC76jeID_kmKG35_ZYEpK1l7g/viewform
This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject
it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data handling,
see the survey privacy statement
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_-_Training_of_Trainers_Application_Cohort_3>
.

Are you curious about how to get started? We have all the details and
recording of the latest information session on Meta:

Please help us share this opportunity in your circle.

Best!

I hope you are doing well, I am writing this email to announce the call for
applications for the second cohort of EduWiki Outreach Collaborators. EduWiki
Outreach Collaborators or EWOC are a dynamic group of Wikimedians who
collaborate with the education team at the Wikimedia Foundation to provide
support, effective collaboration, and learning opportunities for the
education community in the Wikimedia movement.

In 2020, we started this pilot initiative to work with community leaders of
our movement to support volunteers in the movement with better networking,
communication practices for growth, and to work together to spread the
awareness on the value of Wikimedia in education. As a result of which we
had the opportunity to work with 14 Wikimedia community members from
various parts of the world. These volunteers helped in publishing 12
Education newsletters issues, shared many community stories from their
regions, and helped in hosting 3 regional education meetings with 54
participants from 20 countries.

This year we are planning to expand the program and we are planning to work
with 20 volunteers in 8 different roles. To have more information regarding
this program, please visit our Meta page.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/EduWiki_Outreach_Collaborators#Roles>
The strategic goals are designed by the 2020-2021 cohort of volunteers.

We encourage volunteers from all regions and genders to be a part of this
project! We expect the group of EWOC to represent the diversity of our
movement and the call for participation will be open until we achieve this
goal. Respecting the privacy of the members, personal information provided
will not be shared with an external audience. To apply for this

work of the movement
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Dear all,

The Movement Strategy recommendations published this year made clear the
importance of establishing stronger communications within our movement.

To this end, the Foundation wants to gather insights from communities on
ways we all might more consistently communicate about our collective work,
and better highlight community contributions from across the movement. Over
the coming months, we will be running focus groups and online discussions
to collect these insights. Individual focus groups will include 10-15
volunteers who will be asked to share insights on specific questions as
part of a facilitated discussion.

How can we best communicate with your community on an ongoing basis? In
what ways does the Foundation currently support your work? We ask you to
share your thoughts on these and other questions by signing up for a focus
group by the end of Wednesday, 2 December, or participating in the
discussion on Meta-Wiki [1].

We would like to collect feedback from across the movement, representing a
wide range of insights and opinions. We will be working to build as many
focus groups as possible, but want to be upfront that we may face
limitations on the number of groups we can convene based on the level of
interest. However, if you would like to discuss your thoughts in detail, we
are also offering the chance to connect with the Communications team in
other ways, including individual and group meetings and office hours [2].

Initial discussions are happening between now and January 2021. We invite
you to join the conversation, and look forward to working together to
explore some important questions.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-en] Request for photographs of cyclone shelters & of Cyclone Fani

2019-05-06 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hi Ashwin and others,

It seems many Odia Wikimedians have documented the super cyclone. We have
discussed on our Whatsapp groups for uploading these images to Commons, but
the city of Puri and Bhubaneswar are out of power and Internet connectivity
from last 80 hours (and may continue further). So it will take some time
for us to do that.

We are also in touch with the Chief Minister's Office to get government
content under the free license, they have assured us that after the
restoration work, they will focus on it.

Thanks
Sailesh

PS: Cyclone Fani has devastated the state, If possible, please spread the
word about donating to Chief Minister relief fund. cmrfodisha.gov.in

*Hello 1Lib1Ref Organizers,#1Lib1Ref, the annual campaign where librarians
add references to improve Wikipedia, is coming back again this year,
running from May 15th to June 5th, 2018. Why twice? We heard from you a
desire to run it again out of excitement, because May is not summer
vacation for the southern hemisphere, and because Spanish Wikipedia's
birthday also falls in May. This is a great expansion of the event and it
means that there is another opportunity to make Wikipedia more factual and
verifiable by leveraging the expertise of librarians around the world. How
does this relate to the main campaign in January? We encourage librarians,
community members, and affiliates to make 1Lib1Ref their own. So whether
we call this 1Lib1Ref May, 1Lib1Ref for the Southern Hemisphere, or
1Lib1Ref Strikes Back, the point is the excitement is building again, and
we'd like you to be a part of it.If I participated in January, do I have to
do it again in May? It's entirely up to you, this is just another chance
if you want to do more, or if you couldn't get around to January
activities. This is a pilot for us, too, so we'll see how it goes and
discuss what we learned after the May campaign. How can you get involved? -

2017-09-19 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Hello Everyone,

I am glad to share a recent collaboration of Odia Wikipedia community with
the Government of Odisha.

After releasing the content of 2017 Asian Athletics Championships (
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/07/28/digest-asia-athletics-championships/
) another initiative by the Government of Odisha to bridge the dearth of
Information about Odisha on Wikipedia by releasing its social media
accounts under CC-BY 4.0.

Earlier this week, the community members met the Government officials
regarding this, and after understanding the value of Open Content, it took
only 24hrs to release the social media channels under CC-BY 4.0 license.

As a pilot project, 8 social media accounts from Government of Odisha are
under CC-BY 4.0,Now, the content is free for everyone to use, share, and
build upon their work.
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/09/18/odisha-social-media-free-license/

The community is also planning to take the collaboration further and
relicense some of the websites under CC-BY 4.0.

[Wikimediaindia-l] First anniversary of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi

2017-02-12 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Friends,
On 9th February 2017, Wikipedians in Bhubaneswar celebrated the first
anniversary of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi.

WikiTungi [1] is a city based Wikipedia community formed to help the
Wikipedians in the city to meet, share and learn. The Odia community's
WikiTungi is a based in two cities, Puri and Bhubaneswar. While Wikimedians
in Puri conduct meetups bi-monthly, Bhubaneswar Wikimedians meet once a
month. In every meetup, Wikimedians exchange their resources with each
other, helping address their doubts and queries regarding their problems
and projects.

During the first anniversary meeting of the Bhubaneswar WikiTungi, The
community members came up with few ideas to implement it as a best practice
in the Wikipedia movement.

*The Tungi members will invite one of the global community leaders for a
Skype or hangout session.
* Discuss the best practice from the global community and discuss them with
the community.
*Updating the minutes of the meeting and sharing them with the other
community members.
*Updating the learning and evaluation team about the new learning of the
community every month.
*The community will also send Postcards as a souvenir to the participants
of the global community for the online sessions.

We invite you to join us for the hangout sessions and share your best
practice with the Tungi members[2]. Please feel free to suggest us more
ideas.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Odia Wikimedia community documents Ratha Jatra on Wikimedia Commons.

2016-07-07 Thread Sailesh Patnaik
Dear Wikimedians,

Ratha Jatra is one of the longest running festivals of Odisha running for
over a month. The festival starts from Akshaya Trutiya and ends after
Bahuda Jatra. This festival dates back to more than 1000 years.

This year, a few Wikimedians from Puri are documenting the process of
building the ratha (chariot) making . They are also uploading every phase
of the building process on Wikimedia Common. Many of the images have been
already uploaded and a lot more are going to uploaded in the due course of
time.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Call for Nomination of Jury members for WikiConference India 2016

2015-08-29 Thread sailesh patnaik
Dear Wikimedians,

We're glad to announce the second edition of WikiConference India. We must
look ahead in order to continue to build the world’s knowledge for the next
decade. As this is a community driven conference, we want the community to
nominate Juries who will select the host cities from different bids.
*Criteria of Nomination*

Your nominated candidate should

   - Not be from your local language community or from your state.
   - Have at least 4 years experience within Wikimedia.
   - Have at least 5000 edits.
   - Have deep insight about the course of Wikimedia movement in India.

To nominate the *Jury members for Host City Selection*, please visit this
page.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2016/City/Nomination_for_Jury

Please help to find candidates who have perspectives and voices. We also
encourage candidates from all the Indic language projects and communities
who are willing for the success of this conference. We need the full
participation of the Indic Wikimedia community to ensure that the selection
of Juries can be as diverse as possible.

Thank you for your support,

*Sailesh Patnaik*

Volunteer, WikiConference India 2016

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Board Elections

2015-06-07 Thread sailesh patnaik
Hello everyone, this year Wikimedia Foundation specifically invited Indic
wikimedians to be a part of its diverse board. In the past 4-5 months, i
 feel that the bonding of
Indic wikimedians has increased. If someone from India could lead us in
WMF board we could take major steps in Wikipedia Revolution in India.

I have nominated myself for this election, Thiswill be a great opportunity
for me to gain some experience and bring the leadership quality within me.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/Board_elections/2015/Candidates#Sailesh_Patnaik_.28Saileshpat.29

My top most priority will be the growth and improvement of Indic
Wikipedias. Till then i hope for the support from my community and may the
best person win.
