Yes. Running the server space and simplifying usage for other users who may
not necessarily be IT pros.

allow me to chime in for a moment.

Technically, we can set up on your website whatever you need and add
so-called "subdomains", for instance:

* www.wikimedia.or.ke - a website, built with a blog software such as
Wordpress or Drupal

* members.wikimedia.or.ke - current wiki, used for members to publish
reports, document / manage projects, work on concepts etc.

* board.wikimedia.or.ke - closed wiki for the board to be able to
discuss internal issues, develop resolutions, internal documentation
such as passwords of mailinglists, websites and wikis, bank details etc.

* .wikimedia.or.ke - specific wikis for bigger projects,
can be public or only disclosed to a specific project team

the wikis can all be integrated into the members wiki by using the same
user database and user preferences, so everybody just needs one account
and based on the user role she or he can access specific wikis or not.

For smaller chapters I have seen wikis as websites for a while, we also
did that for Wikimedia CH and I think Wikimedia Sweden and Wikimedia
Israel still do that.

On the other hand both Wikimedia CH and Wikimedia Austria at one point
decided to have a "real" website, both are using Drupal now.
I think it is correct to argument about the ability to update the
website - does an association already have so much information and
therefore a need for a website?
Better start low and grow bigger as your association and the needs grow.

The Drupal website has another side-effect: Several Wikimedia chapters
use it for CiviCRM, which is a module on top of Drupal. We maintain our
contacts, finances, event registrations etc. withing CiviCRM. So the
website and the central contact management system is basically the same
thing.

You can always start by using the current wiki / website as your
website, add Drupal CiviCRM later as you need it, build a new website
based on Drupal, once it is ready we move the wiki to the "members"
subdomain and move Drupal to www.wikimedia.or.ke. We are flexible with that.

Hello,

I conquer that we are somehow struggling to update our website for now
courtesy of bad and expensive internet connection in Kenya plus the website
is on its very final stages of construction (Thanks to Alex).

Even though it is not an immediate and dire need, it is Rule of
thumbwe will need a blog
as time goes by - but the sooner the better. It is more
of writing the English composition that we used to write while in primary
and high school:) plus it is interesting to read plus so much more...

[Wikimedia Kenya] Wikimedia Kenya Blog

2012-06-15 Thread Stephen Wanjau
Hello nice people!

In April 2012 immediately after we Boeing-ed (or is it jet back) from
Berlin. We had awesome tweets and re-tweets
with some WMKE members about the need to have a Wikimedia Kenya blog.

See images at [1] and [2] below.

First, I endorse this idea and I hope that way we will have all our updates
and progress in what we are doing
in an elaborate manner and style. Emails are not that refined especially to
new members and to the
international community who are part of this list and the whole Wikimedia
fraternity.

Secondly, we will request to join chapters
planetwhich aims to facilitate
information sharing about the work of
the Wikimedia chapters
and the Wikimedia
Foundation by aggregating their blog feeds
in one place and providing
translation services.

This way other chapters will know what we are doing and we will also get
free translation services to other languages
like Chinese now that they are building Thika road and they need to know
about Wikimedia Kenya:).
(Decided to use Chinese as an example)

For my part, it will be a part of my signature in all emails and where
necessary point to it if an email am writing
has a blog post up for clarity and further reading which I will definitely
help. See [3].

Looking forward to your feedback about this.
