+1 to this being inconvenient. I don't always attend arch com
meetings, but usually do if I happen to be online during the time. If
its a hangout, it is extremely unlikely I would attend unless I was
specifically proposing an RFC.

Re: [Wikitech-l] Status of Technical Collaboration Guidance discussion

2017-03-12 Thread Pine W
Speaking generally, guidance can be helpful even if it's not a policy.
English Wikipedia has similar ways of organizing information and how-to
guides. Some guidance documents are categorized as essays, some as
guidelines, and some as policies. It's worth noting that enforcement is,
somewhat counter-intuitively, not tied directly to the "authority level" of
a document. For example, the venerability policy is frequently violated but
generally people are rarely blocked for violating it, while the exceptions
to norms that are tolerated under "Ignore All Rules" have become thin as
Wikipedia's complexity has grown and practices have become more detailed
and standardized. (I believe that Aaron Halfaker has done some research on
that last point.)

Thanks for adding the link. I think that including it in the email

summaries and would like to ask questions about specific projects but might
feel uncomfortable with replying to the thread or aren't sure where and how
to ask a question.

Re: [Wikitech-l] Gsoc17 Proposal : Adding Data storage feature and upgrading Quiz extension

2017-03-12 Thread Pine W
Hi Harjot,

Thanks for your proposal. I have no authority in the proposal selection
process but I thought I should let you know that several people have
expressed interest in working on the Quiz extension. While it's good to
have so many people interested in that project, I'm hoping to encourage
someone to take up work on the Editor-focused dashboard gadget (
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T91655), especially if a mentor can be
found. I'd like to encourage you to look at that potential project as well.

I'm not sure if the GSoC rules allow a single person to make proposals for
multiple projects, but if the answer is yes (I'll defer to Quim and other
WMF people about that question), and if it's likely that a mentor can be
identified for that project, then I'd be appreciative if you'd consider
also making a proposal to work on that gadget project.

Thanks,
Pine

Why should anyone be doing any work on it? How will we know whether or not
