very good!
Because I have written a PHP library to use the MW library - it does not

Maybe there is a way to add OAuth to it, then I will shamelessly steal

My code is here:

Re: [Wikitech-l] Video Uploads to Commons

2015-02-03 Thread Manuel Schneider
Hi,

there is the tool by Holger which does that using WebM - but it is
hosted on WMF Labs. It uses OAuth for unified login and moving the files
to Commons.

Then, a more elaborate tool for
* storing raw material at the Internet Archive
* generating patent free WebM proxy clips for editing
* rendering high-quality videos
* moving these rendered videos to Commons directly

is the Video Editing Server, developed by some Wikipedians and a MLT
developer, hosted by the Internet Archive:

https://wikimedia.meltvideo.com/

It also uses OAuth for login and moving files to Commons.

The workflow with this:

# upload all your raw files to the server for
## long-term storage
## to make them available to other editors
## to let the server use them in the rendering process

# the server transcodes all files into WebM proxy clips

# editors download the WebM proxy clips
## do the editing on your computer
## create an MLT project file (eg. using kdenlive or another MLT-based
video editor)

# upload the project file
## server will replace proxy clips with raw material
## server will render video project
## server will move generated file to Commons

It comes with a search engine, meta data forms... it's still pretty new
(development started in December '14) but can be used.
We plan to add some more features like tagging using Wikidata QIDs
(hence allowing multilingual / localised tagging / searching, adding
more project file formats and renderer, making old project file
revisions available for download, give it a nice vector-based theme,
give it a better domain name and SSL certificate...

Play with it and have fun!

For source code or any issues refer to GitHub:
https://github.com/ddennedy/wikimedia-video-editing-server

also there see the wiki for the specs and a deployment guide:

Re: [Wikitech-l] What does a hackathon cost?

2014-07-28 Thread Manuel Schneider
Am 28.07.2014 18:36, schrieb Maarten Dammers:

Different chapters are looking into organizing next years hackathon. One
of the recurring questions is how much it costs to organize such an
event. To make it easier to answer this question we published the budget
 of the Amsterdam hackathon at
 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Amsterdam_Hackathon_2013/Budget . I
believe it's the intention to also publish the budget of this year
(Zürich) and 2012 (Berlin). That should give quite a complete overview.

I just did that:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Z%C3%BCrich_Hackathon_2014/Budget

Please take the figures with a grain of salt. Not all WMF scholarship
receipts have been handed in yet, so those numbers are not accurate.
Also there have been some re-arrangements of costs between entities
offering scholarship and what was a scholarship or a business travel.

But the Youth Hostel bill (and that is the main part) has been settled
already.

There were obviously further costs not covered in this budget: Hotel
accommodation not booked through us. I know that WMF and WMDE had a
bunch of people in some hotels. These costs are NOT included. Also we do
not know the reimbursed travel costs by other chapters - we just got the
cost estimates in the scholarship applications and later invoiced the
accommodation to them.

A note for the Wifi:
We had planned to get a sponsor for our own Wifi hardware we could
re-use in other events. Our search for sponsors was unsuccessful - too
late, as we learned, six months is for most companies NOT ENOUGH! Apply
for sponsorships BEFORE SUMMER, at least in Switzerland.

So I bought Wifi gear by myself (as a private person with a freelance
business) and rented it to WMCH for 10 EUR / day per device and 25 EUR /
day for the server. The switch I already owned was included for free.
This obviously didn't make up for the investment (~2.500 EUR) and the
equipment is meant to be re-used. I just bought a big box for it and
shipped everything to London, for Wikimania.
https://www.facebook.com/x80686/posts/321911134652244
If you need it, let me know. When the return of investment is reached I
am also happy to rent it for free.

[Wikitech-l] Wikimedia Hackathon May 9th - 11th in Zürich - Upcoming Registration Deadline

2014-04-11 Thread Manuel Schneider
Dear all,

as you all know the next Wikimedia Hackathon takes place in Zürich,
Switzerland. Registration is already open for a while and we already
passed the deadlines for scholarships and visa assistance. Thanks to the
WMF and several chapters we could assign 29 scholarships to participants
and facilitate 10 visa applications.

This Sunday we need to close the accommodation booking. So if you want
to participate in the Wikimedia Hackathon and you want us to book a bed
for you, please register NOW.

Fill in this form to register:
*
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1nlrQ7cox36xaNK1u9iKP-thogY5TVrilOGJR79DqQ9A/viewform

We have 15 beds left until the Youth Hostel is fully booked, 144
participants have registered so far.

If you do not need an accommodation provided by us you have more time.
Still we would be in favor if you could register soon, so we can adjust
the number of t-shirts, badges etc. Last minute registrations on site
are possible but then don't expect us to have surplus swag left for you ;-)

More information on the event, the location and the program can be found
here:
* https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Z%C3%BCrich_Hackathon_2014

Please also those who have already registered review the suggested
sessions and workshops, add your support or your own submission, to help
the program team to prepare some good sessions for you!

See you soon in Zürich,

[Wikitech-l] MediaWiki, Cookies and EU Privacy Policy 95/46/EG

2014-03-10 Thread Manuel Schneider
Dear all,

not sure if this discussion already happens somewhere else, I couldn't
find it on MediaWiki.org or by googling.

The issue at hand is: EU privacy policy 95/46/EG[1] allows usage of
cookies only if
* the user has been informed beforehand in detail
* the user has accepted the cookie
* this acceptance was given freely, without doubt and through by action
(This is the summary by the Article 29 Working Party issued in a Working
Document 02/2013[2] on October 2nd, 2013.)

An example how this is being implemented can be seen on sourceforge.org
or here:
* http://ec.europa.eu/justice/cookies/index_en.htm

I checked MediaWiki:
* anonymous users don't get a cookie, unless the site owner added
something (eg. Google Analytics, Piwik or content served by another site
using cookies)
- this is fine

* as soon as I click the Login button on the wiki, a cookie is being set
- here we need to work, we need to ask first

So I see two possibilities:

1) catch the click on the Login link to show a banner first to ask for
the users consent, on acceptance forward the user to the login page

2) modify the login process to set the cookie after the actual login and
put an additional text on the login page like by logging in I accept
the usage of cookies by this website
- as the login is an action which implies the consent, if we inform
properly on the login form already

Any thoughts about this?

This issue also concerns all our Wikimedia websites, basically every
MediaWiki out there where people may log into.

The Austrian Communication Law (§ 96 Abs. 3 TKG) defines a penalty of
37.000 EUR.

The cookie on the login page is for the anti-csrf (and captcha if needed)
validation, so getting rid of it would be problematic from a technical
perspective (or would require a second click on the login page).

Thanks Chris for this comment.

So that leaves us with option 1) - a javascript banner. I think that
shouldn't be too hard to implement.

A div which hovers over the Wiki page, the text, two buttons [accept]
/ [leave]. Accept points to Special:Userlogin, leave just closes the banner.
A javascript that shows this div onclick() on the Login link, if no
cookie has already been set by the Wiki.

Maybe even a LocalSettings.php variable $wgApproveCookies = true; that
is true by default and allows admins of internal company wikis etc. to
disable that banner.

As an option we could even add another setting $wgApproveCookiesAlways,
which makes the same div to show up as soon as a user enters the wiki.
That way we can support admins that have further extensions installed in
their wiki which add cookies right away - like Google Analytics.

[Wikitech-l] Help: Upload without text revision - broken

2014-02-23 Thread Manuel Schneider
Hi,

I need help with an uploaded file on Commons which is broken:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caspary,_Daniel_%28de%29.webm

This file was - among many others - uploaded to Commons using the
Commonist. Now as you see the wikitext is completely missing and there
is no way to add it. The wikitext revision seems to be missing,
rendering the database broken.

* the history is empty
* trying to edit the page results in an edit conflict which is not
resolvable (trying to overwrite just triggers the next edit conflict)

Can someone please have a look at the database and fix this issue?

Thanks,

As long as you got one browser that works (and be it just an early alpha

The domain is currently set up in the same way as it was before but we
have now the possibility tu use ssl.wikimania.org for the registrations
and scholarship tools already hosted by Wikimedia CH.

Are you interested in transferring the domain to the WMF which already
has a SSL cluster and an established procedure for handling new ssl
 certificates?

we can do so, when we have a proper concept how to bring this together
with the tools hosted at WMCH server now.
My original inquiry was to get ssl.wikimania.org from WMF which should
point to the WMCH server. As the response was that we don't own that
domain that was what I fixed first.

The easiest way to do that would be to redirect them to
wikimania.wikimedia.org, which already redirects to the proper year

thanks for the hint - I have now changed the redirect target from
wikimania2013.wikimedia.org to wikimania.wikimedia.org on both domains.

I think it would make sense to point the domain itself directly to the
WMF servers and have the Wikimania website running under wikimania.org
directly, with a host ssl.wikimania.org pointing to the WMCH server and
wikimania(.)*.wikimedia.org redirecting to wikimania.org.

the systems, this action can cost effectively for every wikimania team to
reduce the cost to buy SSL certificate and avoid the error from browser. Of
course, we can claim the cost of buying certificate from WMCH/foundation.
Is it possible to do that?

my suggestion was that we get a subdomain like ssl.wikimania.org
pointing to 195.114.98.120 (server of WMCH where the Wikimania Tools are
available hosted since 2010).

We could then implement the registration and scholarship portals on
* https://ssl.wikimania.org/registration
and
* https://ssl.wikimania.org/scholarship

We would need a certificate for ssl.wikimania.org, though, which needs
to be issued by the WMF as they are the owner of wikimania.org.

Otherwise we would be able to register a new domain for this purpose
which is owned by WMCH, so we can do the same as above but buy the SSL
certificates by ourselves.

Someone from Wikitch-L who can help us with that?

Thanks,

Good morning,

after reading all mails in this thread I'd like to comment on this. I
care about this topic as I am leading the WikiTV project we started in
Germany (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiTV#WikiTV_.28on_demand.29).

I would appreciate to see WebM out soon, I think that is important. So
here I agree with Michael - get the TMH released and then add H.264
support later.

What is unclear to me: Do you mean to store all video data in an
intermediate format (be it Ogg or WebM or whatever) and then do a
realtime encoding based on the browsers preference and capabilities?

From a usability point of view this would be perfect. I wouldn't be
happy if I needed to upload WikiTV shows in three different formats in
the future and I think it would also wasting a lot of disk space.
Let alone that these files need a developer to actually get imported
into Commons from a FTP server we have to host on our end because we
can't upload more than 100 MB, which are 80% of our files.

maybe you'd like to check out ZIM: This is an standardized file format
for compressed HTML dumps, focused on Wikimedia content at the moment.

There is some C++ code around to read and write ZIM files and there are

Kenyan Wikipedia Offline initiatives and more. Also the Wikimedia

My C experience is now quite stale and my 64-bit programming

Re: [Wikitech-l] Any news to update static HTML Wikipedia?

2009-09-03 Thread Manuel Schneider
Hoi Gerard,

it is indeed a huge improvement that finally the source code was made
available. This has not yet came to my sight. So GPL violation does not count
here.

Anyway, it took a long time to actually become free. When we were trying to
work with Linterweb it took us months to get some patches of the code they
took from us, and the patches were actually not usable.

Concerning proprietary format:
Zeno was kind of proprietary, but at least it existed some documentation and
DirectMedia was willing to answer questions.
ZIM is completely open and freely documented, so if you don't like our
implementation or you think that C++ is not the language of your choice -
feel free and go ahead with your own implementation.
As long as you follow the standard!

Of course the file format is not fixed until good right now, so if you have
suggestions you could name them on the openZIM mailinglist or file a bug at
the openZIM website.

What Linterweb did was just changing random thing without documentation and
very bad communication towards the openZIM project team. So I do consider it
as proprietary - as it is incompatible with both ZIM and Zeno and there is no
willingnes to collaborate to fix this issue.

Both Tommi (the openZIM main developer who has also delivered his Zeno-related
code to Linterweb) and Emmanuel (from whom they took Kiwix to make it Okawix)
have a long story to tell about this.
As well as I have, because I am being addressed regularly by Linterweb as they
still try to get code and support, but never really get into the project by
telling us what they really want and how we could integrate that into
openZIM.

We had a Wikipedia Offline meeting in Buenos Aires and someone named
Linterweb. Surprisingly for me they are also quite wellknown to the
foundation and more surprisingly they have quite similar views as we have.

I would love to see them using ZIM in Okawix, even if it would require some
changes if they feel we had to make it more usable for them (even though I
see currently no reason why it was not perfectly usable right now).
Of course we invited Linterweb to our first developers meeting and two people
from them actually registered (one of them was Pascal Martin, the CEO) so we
book rooms for them from our project's budget, but they never showed up. A
side story though, but it is an excellent example how collaboration with
Linterweb is going on.

Hi Chengbin, hi list,

static.wikimedia.org is currently not being updated and while the dumps
processing has been assigned to and completely rewritten by Tomasz Finc
(developer at WMF), there has not been made any assignment concerning HTML
dumps.

We had a Wikipedia Offline meeting at Wikimania last week and discussed
several issues. One issue is the fact, that WMF wants to see the ZIM file
format being used for offline dumps and has suggested to include it into the
regular dumping process.
So one question was: When will that happen, what is the status of WMF ZIM
dumping?
As ZIM uses HTML extracts Tomasz clarified that once static.wikimedia.org has
been rebuild to be stable and sutainable, integrating ZIM would be trivial.
But he also informed us that this task has not yet been assigned.

As Brion Vibber and Erik Möller have been at the meeting as well we hope that
this assignment will be made soon and this task has got higher priority.

This said I may also advise you not to you use the pure HTML dumps but the ZIM
files for your Archos, because that's what they are meant for.
A ZIM file containing all german Wikipedia articles (900,000) is 1,4 GB, an
additional full text search index takes another 1 GB.

Re: [Wikitech-l] Any news to update static HTML Wikipedia?

2009-09-02 Thread Manuel Schneider
Hi Chengbin,

ZIM is an upcoming standard for using HTML contents offline. It is derived
from the Zeno file format used on the german Wikipedia DVDs since 2006 (ZIM =
Zeno IMproved).

There are currently several reader applications for it, for instance the
zimreader made by the openZIM project or Kiwix.
There are some ports around like Kiwix on Windows and zimreader on openmoko /
ARM.

The zimreader by openZIM works like a small webserver, it serves the contents
of the ZIM file locally.

Once the HTML dump on static.wikimedia.org is fixed and ZIM file creation has
been integrated you will be able to download fresh ZIM files of all Wikimedia
projects directly from download.wikimedia.org.

Currently the Kiwix team has created some ZIM files and we try to build a ZIM
file directory:
http://openzim.org/ZIM_File_Archive

ZIM actually stores the article text portion of the HTML output of the Wiki in
a compressed cluster. It can hold also all type of other MIME types such as
images, CSS files etc.
http://openzim.org/ZIM_File_Format

It is an open standard and has currently been developed and implemented by the
openZIM team (sponsored by Wikimedia CH) in C++. There is a library (zimlib)
which can be integrated in other reader or dumping applications to make them
ZIM-aware.

Using the open documentation ZIM can be implemented in any other language as
well.
The idea of ZIM is to make the data files freely interchangeable with any
reader application. It is also flexible enough to store other works than only
data from Wikipedia/MediaWiki. Then it tries to keep the reader application
as simple and stupid as possible. There is only uncompression and HTML
rendering to be done while a HTML renderer should be available on nearly all
devices.

Greets,

Manuel

I'm not familiar with the file extension .zim. What is that? Some sort of
compressed html format like .chm? Where can I get a .zim file? I need to
get check if this format is compatible with my Archos's Opera browser.

Well, as I said, Archos devices are not computers. They're merely portable
video players with an internet browser. That's why I seek the static HTML
 version of Wikipedia.

I see. But maybe it is possible to install a reader or at least the zimreader
as webserver, which can be used with the built-in browser. At least it won't
take much ressources.

Will there be easy extraction of zim to HTML? Extracting a dump is too
 difficult.

Of course it is possible, that's exactly what the zimreader does when serving
pages. But as the HTML dump working on Wikimedia clusters is a requirement
for ZIM file creation you can just go with the HTML dump from there as well.

I want to add that Okawix uses code from the pre-ZIM GPL'ed ZenoReader and
ZenoWriter which has been developed by the openZIM team before we started
ZIM, but they changed it to be incompatible with Zeno and ZIM.

So Okawix can be regarded to be as proprietary as well as also a GPL
violation.

We have been contacted by Linterweb (the company behind Okawix) several times
and we also invited them to the developers meeting, but actually they do not
seem to be able for a collaboration with an open source community.
The Wikimedia Foundation had a similar experience when trying to work with
them.

  Hi Chengbin, hi list,

static.wikimedia.org is currently not being updated and while the dumps
processing has been assigned to and completely rewritten by Tomasz Finc
(developer at WMF), there has not been made any assignment concerning
  HTML dumps.

We had a Wikipedia Offline meeting at Wikimania last week and discussed
several issues. One issue is the fact, that WMF wants to see the ZIM file
format being used for offline dumps and has suggested to include it into
  the
  regular dumping process.
So one question was: When will that happen, what is the status of WMF ZIM
  dumping?
As ZIM uses HTML extracts Tomasz clarified that once
static.wikimedia.orghas been rebuild to be stable and sutainable,
integrating ZIM would be trivial. But he also informed us that this task
  has not yet been assigned.

As Brion Vibber and Erik Möller have been at the meeting as well we hope
  that
this assignment will be made soon and this task has got higher priority.

This said I may also advise you not to you use the pure HTML dumps but
  the ZIM
files for your Archos, because that's what they are meant for.
A ZIM file containing all german Wikipedia articles (900,000) is 1,4 GB,
  an
additional full text search index takes another 1 GB.

I bring this old issue up because I want to know if (or if not)
progress (or plans) are made to update the static HTML version of
Wikipedia. BH photos just leaked the next generation of Archos
portable media players. Unbelievably, the rumors of a 500GB version is
true! This is already tempting (especially the price at $420). Just
   waiting for specs

  on

September 15, the Archos event. I really hope it will support NTFS so I

  can

   use the compression feature.

It would be really cool and convenient to have an offline copy of

  Wikipedia

anywhere I go without the need of Wi-Fi. What am I gonna do with 500GB?

BTW, does anyone know what is the size of the current static HTML
   English Wikipedia version uncompressed? Thanks.

[Wikitech-l] Invitation to the 2nd openZIM Developers Meeting - register now!

2009-09-01 Thread Manuel Schneider
Dear developers, publishers and users,

we have fixed the time for our second developers meeting of the openZIM
project, a meeting for all users, developers and publishers of software or
works using the ZIM file format.

== Time ==
It will take place over the weekend from November 20th to 22nd 2009.
We will start on Friday evening and shutdown at Sunday afternoon.

== Topics ==
=== Technical topics: ===
* fixing fulltext search (should we stick with the current system? should we
add different search engines?)
* category handling
* additional ZIM headers (a proposal for adding additional headers to the
format to be able to store all HTML meta data has been made)
* portability of libzim (efforts have been made to port libzim to Windows,
Linux on ARM...)

=== Wikimedia related topics: ===
* requirements for Wikimedia ZIM creation
* MediaWiki interfaces
* other reader applications on different platforms

=== Communication ===
* future exhibitions
* marketing

== Location ==
The meeting will take place in south-western Germany, near Basel.

The openZIM team tries to cover all costs for accommodation and catering
during the meeting. To achieve this we have to know very early how many
people will arrive, so we can choose the best location possible.
We plan to book an appartment with Internet access and kitchen, so we can work
and sleep at the same place and cater ourselves.

== Details and Registration ==
Please register (and add your comments) at
http://openzim.org/Developer_Meetings/2009-2

There you will find also details how to reach the place etc.

REGISTRATION CLOSES AT SEPTEMBER 31st!

Kind regards,

Manuel

It will be from September 25th to 27th. The event is located in
Furtwangen the middle of the beautiful Black Forest in Germany. It is
organised by the European Regiowiki Society, location host is the

 Science.

While I will definitely not go there, this is not far from my place.

If you need a hub to get there - feel free to contact me.
Unfortunately Furtwangen is a very remote place right in the middle of the
black forest.
While nice during summer in winter they have got the highest suicidal rate at
the university there as you're really stuck in a dark valley up there with
not many possibilities to do something or to get somewhere.

Ways to get there:
By train from Switzerland, Germany, France
via Basel (national stations for all three national railways)
via ICE to Offenburg
via RE to Triberg
then bus to Furtwangen

By aircraft fly to EuroAirport Basel/Freiburg/Mulhouse IATA BSL/MLH/EAP
take the swiss exit
via Bus line 50 to Basel SBB
then via train as described above

Alternatively there is also a small airport Baden Airport near Karlsruhe and
Baden-Baden, but there is only a bus line to Baden-Baden (where you can also
pick an RE to Triberg).

Thanks for the hint! Perhaps I should explain a bit more. I have
modified the DumpHTML extension and want to use it to create a
compressend wikipedia dump for offline use. This dump will not contain
images but it would be good if it at least contained the links to the
images so that they can be displayed if there is a connection to the
internet. I think using commons as external file repository would solve
 all these problems.

If you want to have dumps of Wikipedia for offline usage you might want to
subscribe to dev-l (at) openzim.org.

The openZIM team has made several dumps and provides software to do so as well
as reader applications.
Wikimedia is currently working on the dumping process to provide ZIM files on
a regular basis in the same process of making XML and SQL dumps.

If you ask on the ML you can get the URLs to download several dumps which are
already available, there is at least a full dump of german Wikipedia (1,3 GB)
and selected articles from english, spanish and italian Wikipedia with
images.

well, as I already bought the ticket - though I didn't make sense to register
after this news - I will be in Berlin anyway. I'm taking care for
participants of the chapters meeting the week before (showing around in
Germany) and will be in Berlin at Thursday afternoon. I know the locations
and the city quite well, so if I may help somewhere I am happy to do so.
