Hi,
Has anyone found a low cost alternative for lightning protectors for
the Alvarion VL equipment? Transtector and Polyphaser protectors are in
the $100+ range.
Has anyone tried this one? http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/al-cat5w.php
Thank in advance.

Mike,
It seems to me that it would be no different than a phone line - - if you
do not surge protect it you stand the chance of losing your radios just like
folks always lose their modems in their PC's.
This is what I use in the NOC and at my tower sites:
*nods* I'd actually be connecting the main house with another house and a
shop, so no radios, but there would be switches.
I didn't even think about APC. oops!
Here is a great standalone unit. Froogle has some good prices on them.
With the new 5.3 requirements coming in effect this month, I doubt any of the
companies mentioned are Fcc Certified...

Mario,
I see a couple of critical differences between the recommended lightning
arrestors (Transtector ALPU-ALVR and Polyphaser IX-ALVR) and the
Altelicon unit to which you linked below.
First, the Altelicon unit, like the Transtector ALPU-TSU that it intends
to be an alternative to, is

If you're in a pinch, Radio Shack part # 273-105 works.
Mouser and other part suppliers carry them as well for cheaper (not
sure on part #'s though, sorry).

So that just goes around the outside of the cable, like they have on
monitors? Will that protect the ethernet and power at the same time?

Correct, ideally you should place one at each end of the cable, right
before it's terminated. They just clamp over the cable itself and
help reduce spurious RF by turning it in to heat before it gets to
your equipment.
If you're need to chock the cat5 and power line, I'd use a single
ferrite
Again, this one is not designed for use with VL. It is for 48 VDC
devices.
